Fairy liquid is your friend when rethreading strain reliefs. Even if the cable is very snug it will slip through beautifully with the tiniest drop of liquid on the cable.

I own one and it's always scary to see usb wires stuck inside the unit meaning if you break the wire or the conector gets crushed or sonething, it's a pain to fix, you did a super good job on this! Btw the white flashing light indicated that the wheel is on but it failed to calibrate, the wheel should rotate by itself and center out after once plugged in, this is because you didn't have the power adapter plugged in, maybe you didn't even have the power adapter with you since it's not yours, the power is for the motors you saw inside that provide force feedback, happy christmas steve!

I recently bought myself a £26 IGBT arc and tig capable welder off ebay, I promised my daughter I would build her in the new year a frame utilising an old Mini Sport car seat and some 2x2 square tube as she has quite an exotic set of steering wheels and pedals for her PS2.

With the strain relief, I usually find a drill bit about the same diameter as the old cable and clean out the hole before reusing it. I then slide the cable through the strain relief a little more than I need and then put superglue / epoxy on the cable and pull it back a little so the glue goes all the way in. I have never had any issues that way.

I think if you used a reamer on that plug, you could have inserted the fully braided cable through. Reamers are a handy bodging tool.
@fxman20118 күн бұрын
I realize it's to late now but you could have used a drill bit to enlarge the hole. I've done this fixing headsets at work. You enlarge the hole. Pull the wire through. Farther than needed. Then a little bit of black silicone on the rubber on the usb. Then pull it back and let the rubber cure.

I personally wouldn't have bothered taking it apart and replacing the cable. I'd have cut the damaged bit out and spliced in part of an old phone charger but both methods work!
@carlgray676418 күн бұрын
good job steve ! ... maybe you could have drilled the strain relief hole a tad bigger ? ... happy chrimbo .
@justforfun18718 күн бұрын
I would just use a drill to make that whole a bit wider to fit the new cable. I did this in the past for a few controllers that had a wire broken near the controller.
@3ATIVE18 күн бұрын
A couple of dabs of Superglue inside the heat-shrink would help to secure the new cable more.

A handy lubricant for 'helping' wires through tight grommets is a dab of washing-up liquid. Liquid soap works too. Just remember - a little goes a long way..

Nice fix but not solid at all if you pull the cable, it's only held by the heat shrink from outside.
@shambleslongplay356618 күн бұрын
You should bore out the hole in the strain reliefe so your usb cable fit. (shockingly they are all aproximatley the same size, "some crazy talk about being a standard" so it would fit and could be glued properly) "just incase what i said was hard to follow, the only reason the new usb cable didnt fit is because the old usb cable casing was still in there"
@Elberto7112 күн бұрын
Brave or lucky, assuming those cables use the same wire colours 👍🏻
@allthegearnotaclue16 күн бұрын
That strain relief is doing nothing now with just those thin wires through it, the strain is being taken by the bit of heat shrink which won't last. I'd have at least added a cable tie after the strain relief to help it a bit.
