If you have a faulty ELT you have the responsibility to deactivate it. Unplug it / take the battery out, and label it INOP. Continuing to let it fire off strains the people watching for people that actually need help.

Yes, I did that as soon as I landed, unfortunately there were no good places to land earlier in the flight where it became a big problem or else I would have landed sooner and deactivated it

@@TrentonPalmerI guess I’m just a little confused. Two minutes into the video ( 2:01 ), you have a clip of your airplane just lifting off when the ELT starts screaming. In the headset audio, you clearly state that this had been a problem that you were well aware of. In your reply to this comment thread, you stated that there were no good places to land. From where I sit, it looks like you just took off from one. I’m not judging. I’m just Monday-morning quarterbacking. A couple of things I noticed early on were that for one, you already knew that there was something glitchy going on. And two, that you were formation flying with your friends. What you could have done is talk about the situation amongst your fellow pilots and agree that due to the need for further troubleshooting, you’ll need to disconnect the ELT. The problem may only be intermittent, but it is hugely distracting. Because you were all flying in a formation, or at least a flight of two early on, were there to have been an actual emergency, there would already be someone who would know where you were, and fuel permitting, could loiter above you until help arrived. Again, this is not criticism. We’re all wanting to know what we would do, or could do, if exposed to a similar set of circumstances. I enjoy your channel. Thanks for sharing.
@Darthvader-oc5tp3 ай бұрын
I couldn’t hear the ELT going off in the timestamp you provided. Having not watched the entire video yet, and not knowing entirely how an ELT determines a crash from a hard/rough landing, I would guess it goes off because the places he’s landing at/just took off from is rough terrain and the ELT goes off because it thinks landing there is a crash. There may not have been any place smoother to land at nearby to avoid it going off. That being said, had it been a consistent issue before I would wonder why not disable it and placard inop before going in/taking off from where they were. It may have been a new issue so that may be why.

Two things Trent. First off, I really appreciate how you and your buddies coordinate formation flying, great communication and keeping eyes on one another, yielding to the other aircraft when they may not have great vis on you. I haven't flown much formation, so I've always been pretty dang cautions when flying in a group. But seeing how you do it with your friends gives me much better understanding of how it can look and be done safely. Second, I think you handled yourself very well under the circumstances of broken equipment/gear issues while in the backcountry. AND i appreciate you showing that in your video (not just simply editing it out). I've had my share of stuff breaking in the backwoods around Alaska, and there's always that bit of uncertainty, am i making the right decision continuing to fly with less than perfect equipment... "should I just call for a pick-up?" But I think you showed good judgement on getting yourself and your airplane home, keeping others (potential passengers) out of danger, while managing your risk. Well done, great video.

In the early 80s I was stationed at a NORAD radar control site in Duluth, MN. I can tell you that the sound of an ELT coming over our radios set the hair on the back of your neck straight up. Our command center had the Guard Radio always on speaker for just that reason. Late one night we had a ELT go off and everyone on duty ran to our radar consoles to locate the thing. Turned out to be an F-106 at one of our fighter bases that was being worked on. Big oopso and of course reports filed. So in case anyone wonders, unless the attitude and policies have changed, that sound awakens folks and they get to work to locate and provide assistance. We did have on actual event when an F-106 went down and that was the only other time I heard that sound. Not to throw darts, but; folks need to be aware that those things set wheels in motion and unless you respond that its a false alert, people are going to be looking for you to help and that could mean thousands of dollars in cost. So if you are out in the back country and it goes off, I'd recommend you self-report immediately, especially if it happens as you are landing or if as a result of that false activation you decide to land. Imagine ATC pulling up radar tracks (History) and it shows a plane descending, with an ELT going off. In a real emergency what would you want to have happen?

ARTEX ELT 345X KIT, WITH 2 WIRE SLIM SWITCH (8108) is a direct replacement for the ACK E-04 ELT. Our ACK E-04 ELT false triggers when the avionics is turned on (Vans RV14a). If it’s an ack e04 then I see them go off like this all the time at my shop. Put in fresh batteries in remote and speaker. Avoid coiling the phone wire and route it away from battery and relays. After that doesn’t work send it to them they will change the g switch and hopefully that fixes it. Once I had one that I sent back to them twice and still had problems owner got frustrated and we just replaced it with new and it worked fine. There must be something they can’t test that is letting the elt go off.

Hi Trent have a look at your right undercarriage bearings or brake adjustment, as it appears your wheel stops rotating immediately after going airborne while the left wheel continues to rotate thus I assume you are not tapping the brakes after liftoff
@TrentonPalmer3 ай бұрын
I ride my brakes, horrible habit, but since I don’t run steering springs on my tailwheel it requires brakes to turn while taxiing and I just end up doing the same thing when giving rudder inputs on takeoff. You’ll notice some takeoffs that I don’t ride the brake and the wheel spins freely.

Having a smoke system is fun to use when flying passed people, but using it for just half a second just makes your plane look like it's burning too much engine oil and having issues. If you're going to use it, use it for at least 3 seconds to make a decent trail. It looks much better.

Oregon Trail, via teletype and printer attached to the intermediate school district’s (county level) mainframe. When notified by printer that you were under attack, you had fractions of a second to hit the space bar (return fire) or be killed. That feature was not maintained in the PC versions my kids played years later. IMO, the original was more realistic and more interesting, as real travelers did encounter both good and bad persons on the trail.
