Broken Rusted Old Sprayer Restoration

This is the Pulverisateur Muratori 1955 Paris
I found this sprayer a week ago at the flea market, it cost me 8 euro and was very rust and didn't work.
All gaskets were very old an broken.
This sprayer was used for flower ,potatoes and vines treatment.
It was a very difficult reconditioning,
i found hard all the gaskets because you can not find those sizes anymore.
To remove the oxidation from copper i used vinegar, it worked very well.
To bring copper color back to life i used a metal polish and a polishing disc .
To protect against oxidation i applied a car wax that makes a barrier between the copper and exterior.
After installing all the parts it's time to test this antique jewelery.
I'm really excited that it works.
The sticker was indispensable for the correct completion of the project.

After restoring brass (or copper) I would recommend putting on a couple coats of lacquer if you want to keep it from corroding again.

Any special kind of wax? I like fading brass items in second had shops and polishing them up.

Since it isn't likely to be used, wax could work but lacquer is longer lasting.

Shezza Please don't go around polishing brass items like bowls, jugs, statuettes, and other ornamental pieces. Polishing them may LOOK nice to you, but it actually lowers their market value considerably. Tarnish on brass is not the same as corrosion, it takes a really long time to build up and the colour is really desirable to a LOT of buyers... polished pieces, not so much.

Gorgeous! I love that you find items that were completely ordinary at the time they were made, most of the time discarded when they got old, and make them as new. Just an ordinary plant sprayer made beautiful. You must have a neat little museum by now.

I have a tip for you for your vice ; The mats that are used for yoga, camping, garden kneelers is tough, flexible, cheap, and can be shaped. You can cut them to fit your vice clamp jaws into various shapes and it will hold things tightly without damaging what you are holding. Great video as always.

24:36-25:20 - Don't think it is a good idea. Because this part works not as gasket but more as piston and it has frequent dynamic loads. After a while you will notice that. A good thing - it can be quickly replaced (with a thick rubber gasket for example). The rest is great.

It most likely was a made of leather and cup-shaped, the top of the pump rod head should be removable to mount it. Find a piece of leather, around 1.5mm thick, punch a hole of the diameter of the groove, cut the piece to a ring, about 1.5cm wide, soak it in hot water until it is really soft and pliable, fit it to the pump rod head with the coarse side facing the handle, pull that into a piece of pipe of the pump tube´s inner diameter, let it dry, it then should have a cup shape. Fit it to the pump with applicaation of a light oil. It may take a few minutes to soften up again and then a few strokes to properly seal, but once it does, it will do for a long time, as long as it is either soft from oil or from water.

The pump mechanism gasket made from pipe thread sealing is probably to blame for the heavy pumping action. It's advantage (when used as a pipe thread sealer) is that it expands if it gets wet. No so helpful in this case. Otherwise great work :-)

For the sticker part as i read the description below, there are some programs where you can take a picture and measurements of the sticker and re-create it in o program so you can get it cl9se to what it originally looked like. I don't know how much it costs to have it sent to a company that makes stickers, to make it though. Might be something to look into.

There is no point in mixing baking soda and vinegar. Soda neuralize acid in vinegar, and it stop working (cleaning). What you want to neutralaze are vinegar remains on your part, after it's cleaned. Dilute baking soda in pure water (demineralized), and wash with it after treatment with acid. BTW, lemon (citric) acid work as good as vinegar, and it smells much nicer.

Not as well. Citric acid has a ph of 2.2 acidic acid 2.8. Both will work but vinegar is much stronger so will work faster and with less effort.

@@jaycie5021 um, on a pH scale a 2.2 is a stronger acid than a 2.8 in terms of acidity. 0-2 is strong acid, 2.1-6.9 is a weak acid, 7.1-11.9 is a weak base, and 12-14 is a strong base. And of course 7 is neutral

When I was growing up, people would polish up old coper fire extinguishers, similar to this, and sell them in antique stores. It looks very nice. Never considered a sprayer could do the same.

instead of using a sponge with scotchbright attached, use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. It works very much better than the sponge without the scraping damage caused by the scotchbright

@@GunnerAsch1 Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is just a simple piece of melamine sponge. For some reason, us Americans are willing to spend much more if you package something basic up like that all fancy with a cool name. So even if the name brand Mr. Clean Magic Eraser isn't available where he's at (which is honestly a good thing, as they are very expensive for what they truly are), any piece of melamine sponge will work, which should be pretty widely available at craft stores worldwide.

@@GunnerAsch1 Check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melamine_foam It's also called "Melamine Foam" in various parts of the world, but I've always heard it referred to as "Melamine sponge." My Grandmother used to use melamine sponges to clean her wallpaper, wood, and various other items in her house. It, along with "cleaning dough" were very popular cleaning products way back when. They kind of fell out of favor, and then Mr. Clean Magic Eraser brought melamine foam back into popular use. It is *very* lightly abrasive, and likes to grab onto and hold surface contamination. It's able to do this without hurting even very delicate surfaces. I doubt that the old style "cleaning doughs" will ever come back, as the were made with volatile solvents that wouldn't pass today's VOC standards. They were extremely effective surface cleaners, though. They'd cut through grease like nothing you've ever seen, and leave a streak free finish. I used to love to play with the stuff, and help Grandma clean her house with it back when I was very young.
