Actually the amount of land, equipment, etc. Translates how much in your in debt, how much overhead you have, etc. Because once the farmer factors in all the overhead for machinery, land leases, etc. Some are not as rich as they appear to be. But yep, some are sensitive & don't want the ungrateful judgemental ppl making comments. Thank you for sharing being vulnerable.

I am in weather that they are saying we should stay home, the minus windchill can freeze your skin in no time, etc. Temps are in low single numbers with windchills in the minus! Right now -20 F to -30 F windchill from late afternoon yesterday thru tomorrow, and central to northern MN a lot colder. I enjoy Winter at your temperatures also!! Have a Great Weekend!! 🤗❤️

Hi Noah very informative & interesting. Yes you could go on and on about costs. You have grain, hay, medicine, and troughs and other ways to feed. There are just so many things you don't think about. In the long haul you will be having some bison calves and help with expenses. That's down the road. You have to have a passion to raise bison. I am fascinated by them. They are neat animals and I applauds you for trying to raise bison and trying to build your herd. Hou will get there Noah you have the compassion for these animals and I thank you. I think they trust you. Kudos to you Noah. Merry Christmas to your family and you and have a blessed one at that. Thank you.

Some farmer/ranchers are hesitant to tell you how much property they have. But I find that counterintuitive to the Bison Community. From hearing you and Dusty talk that you are willing to help other Bison Ranches get started and to grow the Bison population. Just understanding these beautiful creatures that large swathe of land is needed. I suspect the financial investment is steep.

No matter what a golden rule is no contract-no deal. Never get on a piece of property without a contract. period. I burned myself by not following that simple advice. At first you may think "wow this land owner is great, we are going to get along so well" Let me explain what happens. You get set up. If most people even get the slightest whiff that you are making a little money "off them".... it keeps them up and night rolling around in their head and they will try to mess it up. There is usually a REASON any land might be available.

The younger ranchers are key to having more bison ranchers here. I’ll get someone thinking through the local FFA. No food needed on native land, and no pulling calves. The neighbors boy asked 100 questions. The only one I didn’t know was if the current hot hanging weight was at $4 per lb. I did find calves $300 cheaper at $1,200 each, so I was off a bit. More sought after genetics are towards 3,000 a calf.

The bull panel holding pen kept them In perfectly. Even the1500 lb one didn’t bother it. Keep in mind we’re on the old Grand Prairie and can produce 300 bushels of corn an acre. The area we fenced is 78-80 acres. With 6’ barbwire fence, 8 Buffalo, land, 4 creek flood gates, 160’ holding pen, and handling system. 576,000 usd. Post covid costs with land bought year’s ago. Our future sites will be pastures and wasteland. Farmland won’t be a viable option for most in IL. I would say my best production is the wetland wasteland area as it’s always damp, and not farmable. In my area it’s the younger cattle ranchers that are interested in bison.

This was interesting. I don't plan on even thinking about raising bison. I just think they are interesting animals. I understand that bison are social animals, kind of like cattle. So, could. you keep a bison calf with like Hereford calves that you plan on raising for meat? I don't know if bison and cattle could form a bond if they are raised together.
@BrokenArrowBison
@BrokenArrowBison 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you found it interesting Donna. I’m sure eventually they would form a bond. I know people that have bison and cattle together and typically they form two separate herds. I would imagine if you just had one animal though and a herd of cattle they would probably assimilate.
