Not Rory, but he was the very first pioneer in music whom used it... Check Rory out please... He is like noone else... By the way... this is an amazing podcast and it containes meditation too... So I'm familiar with much of those, as I'm a big fan. I've played Under the bridge mainly on my acoustic guitars 1000's of times now since starting to learn it over 20 years ago. As a painter I have something similar to what John is talking about. In my case of course it is maybe even more 'visual', as it usually ends up being a painting. But it all starts with the hint/feeling/presentiment of something that is going to take physical form. Sometimes it's more or less defined, but there is no doubt that this is the SOMETHING that makes art happen. I believe everyone can experience that, just stay opened and relax, you cannot force it!

This was way more important to me than the rhcp albums. So many of the artists ive studied since i was a child and throughout adulthood are shared by Frusciante. I have printouts of chord and scale charts from holdsworths instructionals pinned to my walls, and some of my earliest experiences with recording music were trying to recreate zappa songs by ear by layering guitars. I spent many years looking in a mirror with my guitar and playing randy rhoads songs, pretending i was him. I couldnt be prouder to be part of that musical tradition, even as a very very small part. To be able to hear the most prominent and recent member of that musical ancestry sharing so much of his thinking means the world to me. His explanation of how he sees and feels music especially was important to me because I've done the exact same thing all my life since i got my first audio players and toy instruments when i was very little. Im not aware of anyone else who talks about music this way. I spent some time in college studying western philosophy and ive read dozens of philosophy books but art and music are rarely talked about, and if it is with very little practical application or insight into actual experience. I think ive read more about why there's an avoidance to talking about art and music than anyone actually talking about it. Theres this idea in a lot of ancient tribal religions that we owe what we have to those who came before us - ancestor spirits. we owe them a debt that cant be fully repaid, only passed down through more generations. Every generation the debt owed grows and so do the gifts we inherit. I will do my best to do that with my own music students and in my own art.

He could just play the exact same stuff every night and duplicate the albums, but he’s so dedicated to his art and the audience that he insists on creating anew. And when he really nails it, which is most of the time, it’s such an amazing experience for the audience. This dude is a rare breed.

Have a huge love for John as a most favorite guitar player and huge respect for Rick and his work. For me Rick is a defenition what good producer does with the bands in busines. Many eyars ago i've lisened some demo materials before band meet Rick and compare it when Rick stept in. Huge difference. Only then i realise how important this craft. Back in the days i was thinking that producers only gave money for the record sessions, hanging out with the stars and take some bite of royalities. Considering that how often the artists complains on big bosses in the musical business, i was convinced that producers was a part of this circle. And then i lern more about Rick. And about guys like George Martin of Beatles.

It's funny John said he had that dilemma of "showing off" or trying to "prove he was the best guitarist" vibe or whatever during the Stadium Arcadium recording... when I never once ever considered his playing "showing off" - I think of his work as coming from the deepest well of emotion where every note is simply meant to be... Also, his solo album "Curtains" just wrecks me every time I listen; it is carnal and brutally beautiful.

The first time I heard Curtains it was specifically the song 'The Real' while I was coming up on lsd. A breathtaking experience.... I was completely addicted from that moment.

Not sure you know what 'carnal' means because Curtains is absolutely not carnal in any way.

@@johnarundell7951 Pertaining to flesh; sensual. It sounds like he is trying to rip his own heart out of his chest. You must not have heard the album or know all the meanings of the word.

It's fabulous and crazy to hear how John created UTB 30 years after first hearing the song.

I love these interviews! For part three i’d love to see questions on all of John’s solo albums (Niandra LaDes, Smile from the streets you hold + more) it would dope if you asked what the scene and culture was like in the late 80s early 90s in LA (Jains Addiction) the bands they met and how it influenced John’s musical sensibilities. Also advice for guitarists in a band :)

I'm a relatively new fan of RHCP. This John fella really sounds like a genuine guy, and it was scary to hear about his rougher life experiences. I'm glad to hear that he's doing a lot better these days. Great talk.

Awesome interview. Gotta pick back up at By the Way though. Ended the last one at Californication. Just completely skipped BTW and SA. It was super interesting hearing johns thoughts on each album and some of his processes for playing and recording on each album.

As a musician, Frank Zappa’s music and guitar playing changed the entire way I thought about music and composition. Dweezil is really taking that concept and his dad’s music further these days. Glad to hear John talk about Zappa.

Two of the greatest creative minds of all time. In their own respective ways. This is unbelievably helpful for any musician to be able to listen to.

Artists like John Frusciante, Rick Rubin, Maynard James Keenan etc. do help me see the life more clearly and motivate me to go on and do something creative. I am amazed how such "love" and "wisdom" are transferred from one generation to another. I am grateful for that.
