I use a Cateye AMPP 400 on my Brompton, handlebar mounted. I carry a spare one to clip in so I am not caught out with low charge status. Overall, I get on well with this light. Flashing mode - One thing I have noticed is that the flashing mode electronically interferes with the functions of my Cateye cycle computer - I am guessing this is because the flash-pulse sends out a signal of some kind which clashes with the pick-up signal from the wheel sensor. In my case, I have found a solution by mounting the cycle computer on the frame just behind the main frame hinge, evidently a sufficient distance away from the AMPP 400 to no longer interfere. Mounting the light on the handlebars has advantages and disadvantages. Advantages are that I have easy access to switching on/off and changing modes while riding, and I can easily see charge status throughout the ride. High-mounted means the light can point downwards sufficiently so as to not annoy motorists but still give an excellent spread of light down dark country roads. Disadvantages are that I have to unclip the light to allow a full fold. It also takes up handlebar space (M-style bars) which means mounting other accessories is compromised.

I've done it - I've gone and bought a Brompton! I hold an avionics engineer and the Brilliantbikes team responsible, because together you provided so much information, lightly seasoned with some gentle humour. Six speeds (because I need the lower bottom gear) with a rear rack to carry my ham 'n' cheese sandwich... no electric motor because I need the exercise. (If I lived in Surrey I would have bought it from you - honest!)

Thanks for sharing. I think if it is using the same mounting as the 400, the angle is still too high and it will be too glaring to traffic in the opposite direction.
@FirstLast-jm4dx
@FirstLast-jm4dx 2 жыл бұрын
Better to get the Trigo light mount with the GoPro/Cateye bracket. With this setup, you can adjust the angle of the light. I agree with you that many of these bike lights need to be redesigned to have a sharp cut-off to not blind other road users.

A brilliant video literally❗️I am quite happy with my 400 it does a good job lighting a path so I don’t think I’d switch especially if the 500 has only half the run time at full power. Plus I think the 400 just has a better look aesthetically. On another subject have you had any experiences with the Sturmey Archer 5 speed hub? I have a 3 speed and did switch to a 40 tooth chainring but still find myself wishing for a lower gear on steep climbs.🥵

@SingaporeUntold
@SingaporeUntold 2 жыл бұрын
A handle bar mount light is better. You can adjust the angle and output to the situation. Usually people who low mount it tend to point it more forward and blind oncoming cyclists. At the handlebar it can be angled down for others. 100 lumens or lower. Don’t blind your fellow cyclists. 👍🏻
@brilliantbikes
@brilliantbikes 2 жыл бұрын
The benefit of the low mount is to shine on the ground and not to interfere with the fold or luggage block. We do often also pop a handlebar mounted light on as well. It is nice to have a bright light on the dark roads so you don’t run over things or potholes Thanks for watching
@tim2015
@tim2015 Жыл бұрын
A good thought, but bicycle handlebars are close to eye level for the drivers of most small to medium size cars. On my (20" wheel) bike I have a bright light mounted at brake caliper level, which is very useful on unlit roads and a lower powered flashing light on the handlebars, which makes me much more visible to car drivers.
@SingaporeUntold
@SingaporeUntold Жыл бұрын
@@tim2015 it’s about the angle. Your lower one will hit drivers more. Think of it like having a car low beam on the handle bar because it’s angling down but a high beam at the brake caliper area. The advantage of a lower mount light is that it creates shadows on the floor surface if you need to read for obstacles. Most bike lights don’t have a cut off of the beam at the top. Facing up will leak the light up and into others eyes. Try with a wall. But don’t stand right next to the wall. You need to be like 50 ft back or more
@tim2015
@tim2015 Жыл бұрын
I forgot to make clear: my brighter light, fitted just above the 20" front wheel's brake caliper, is angled downwards at a suitable angle to light the road's surface a few feet ahead. And the flashing light on the handlebars, which is not bright enough to dazzle or blind car drivers, is set to point horizontally forwards. I chose this combination because, when driving my car, I have been dazzled by dangerously bright bicycle and motorbike lights.

Yet another charming and informative video, thank you very much. However, I have a video idea I'd like to pass on (entirely free of charge). I'm intensely curious about which model of Brompton would be faster to ride up and down Box Hill 5 times, immediately after eating a full roast dinner and six mince pies (with extra cream). Is it the 6 speed or the 2 speed? I just have to know the answer. Perhaps you could cover this highly important question in your next video?

Sadly the "ampp" series was a downgrade from the old "volt" if you compare the 800 versions to each other it was the same weight and brightness but literally half the battery time... The poor battery performance wasn't really due to that 100 extra lumens

It's a broken piece of S. The charge port is designed at a 45 degree angle. Yeah, you heard that right. All charger ports made by all cultures throughout all eras use STRAIGHT ports so that the charger doesn't get bent. They use a 45 degree bent port and guess what, my charger broke after 1 charge. Snapped off the plastic.

Hello, I want you to help me make a decision about the electric brompton bicycle, I have seen one in Barcelona and I live in another city where there are many slopes, to increase the speed mode in the engine you have to stop the bicycle and climb from one to two and from two to three, which makes it difficult to handle the bicycle. Is there another way that when you are riding the bike you can raise or lower the motor assist modes without having to stop the bike? I currently have one that works very well for me and has control of the bicycle on the handlebars and allows me to raise and lower the motor assistance modes without any problem at any time, it is foldable the only thing that the bicycle is a bit heavy for me I would like to buy the Brompton but I have these doubts, I hope you can help me if it is possible to find out if I can use the Brompton in the same way that I use mine, greetings and thank you very much 😊

The video of passing by bicycle or beams hot to the wall will not give an understanding of how beam will look like on the road and how good it will eliminate it. I'd suggest doing beam shots from riders perspective which is very easy considering these are battery powered lights and not dynamo lights.
