I have to give it to the stock Bronco Sport all the way. The solid outcome with her less overall experience and familiarity with that brand new Ford makes it the big winner in my opinion.

Honestly at first sight I would have bet on the modified Subaru, “this is an unfair test”. This video has caused me to rethink and do a deeper dive into the Bronco Sport. For the money it appears to be the choice when you combine ability and value vs Jeep or Subaru. I wonder what a slightly modified Bronco Sport could do.

Nobody mentions that the Badlands Trim is top of the line, with higher clearance, lockers, better suspension, armor. And the Crosstrek is NOT the best Subaru for softroading. It is underpowered, less clearance, less beneficial gearing. The fact that a nice modded one did as well as it did keeping up is a win for the Subaru. Just imagine if this was a top model vs top model, both with top offroad trims. That would be the Outback Wilderness. I own one, and they are great softroaders. I miss the locker of the badlands, but beyond that, I'll take the Subaru overall. Better clearance, better ride, much better tow capacity, which was the last thing I looked at when I decided to go with the Subaru. I need the tow capacity. Databyter
@monte99cm Жыл бұрын
@@DatabyterWhat subaru would be an apples to apples comparison? Size, equipment, basically a crosstreck wilderness and a bronco sport badlands are in the same market. Compact soft/off roader. Subaru needs to give up on the CVT. It's fine on ATVs and Snowmobiles where a belt change is quick.
@Databyter Жыл бұрын
@@monte99cm Obvioualy apples to apples would be the Outback Wilderness vs the Bronco Sport Badlands. Those are not only the similar class, but Top Trim of the similar class. The Crosstrek Sport as I said in my post, is not really purposed the same as the Badlands version of the Bronco Sport which is THOUSANDS MORE than any other Bronco Sport trim because it has a lot more offroading capability than ALL the other Bronco Sports you see tooking around on the street. 90% of those are NOT Badlands versions. The fact that the Subaru kept up to the top trim is a testament to the lightness and nimbleness of the crosstrek platform. Now that the Crosstrek offers a Wilderness version, we are getting closer, compete that with a non Badlands version of the Bronco Sport. But if you are competing a Badlands version of a Ford, You need to put it against the Top Trim of whatever manufacturer it is up against for a fair Apples to Apples competition, because Badlands are the cat's meow, electric actuated clutch based rear lockers, higher clearance, I think it even has some skid plates and modes. Databyter
@johnfilmore76389 ай бұрын
@@Databyter if you only need towing capacity you would NOT get a Subaru, the CVT continuously variable transmission is lightweight & good mileage for highway driving but has very little torque at low speed, a conventional automatic (hydromatic clutch plate) is what you need for offroad driving especially where it's rocky the CVT is terrible at slow crawling, I've had a Subaru Forester, Outback & now Honda CRV, all of them are the better tuned CVT over the Nissans & Kia-Hyundai garbage, Honda CRV especially is amazing on the road but that 2000 lb towing limit you absolutely do not want to go over that, CVTs run by tension of a belt to a smooth cone-shape pulley & once the belt breaks tension & slips from too much torque demand, the CVT is trashed! You will not find a CVT vehicle with a high tow or load rating, you basically have to get momentum with a CVT to get over rocks, you cannot overcome physics & materials no matter how much bullshit advertising Subaru does it may have the clearance to get over rocks but the CVT does not have the loq speed torque necessary for crawling. FACT! I haven't driven a Crosstek or Outback Hybrid, the hybrid transmission is an electric motor-generator, which electric if setup right provides unmatched low speed torque, that might work, Subarus & any CVT don't work well for crawling slowly over rocks & unlike a conventional automatic it becomes even worse when carrying or pulling any type of load in back, you have to rev high to get torque & then you lunge forward, precise start stop control over rocky areas is difficult at best, nerve-wracking in general, but Subaru has their loyal fanclub more in love with the adventure advertising than actual real world offroad driving.

Very impressed by the Stock Bronco Sport. Even though it has a rear locker button, it’s really just a twin clutch rear limited slip differential, similar to what I have in the Honda Passport. The Bronco sport does have that trick GOAT mode Brake vectoring system, something my Honda doesn’t have (I just have regular traction control). I was also impressed by the way the Subaru was modified. This video really showed off how much more flex the Ironman 4x4 system gives. In stock form, there’s just no way a Subaru would do those climbs, not with the lines you put them through. Also, super glad he’s monitoring his transmission temperatures. A CVT drain and fills get pricey, but it’s cheaper than having to replace the whole CVT for $7-9K. One last thing, the two vehicles are geared differently. The Bronco sport is 17.9:1 and the Crosstrek is 15.1:1. Would like to see these two at the prolonged hill climbs at Gorman. We should set something up and film at the 4x4 practice area. Maybe mid September? I’d love to see Crystal’s Bronco sport take on some of the obstacles there. I think it will do well. I’ll ask my buddy Emmanuel to come out with his Ridgeline aka the NARTPRO.

“We’re gonna see if we can get this subie stuck in the sand” yeah, good luck with that. XD. They may not be the most extreme off-roaders or be able to handle the roughest terrain, but one thing subies are specifically designed to do is not get stuck on loose surfaces like sand or snow or mud. That’s why they’re so popular in mountain towns and remote areas with a lot of unsaved roads. I’m really impressed with both cars’ performance here. Gold Country Bronco's had a Sport come out on our 1st Bronco run and it did fantastic. The trail itself was mild but had a lot of flexy spots and loose shale and the sport made it through as long as you kept up speed to let the traction control do its work. Even took a gatekeeper obstacle that a lifted wrangler on 35's smacked it rear bumper on but the sport made it down and back with no issues with some good spotting and taking it slow. Overall really impressed with it stock. I will say that the 4WD system freaked out once when it had a lot of wheel spin and we had to turn the car off and on to get it back into 4wd cause it wanted to stay in 2wd after that.

I recently bought a Bronco Sport Badlands, I had also strongly considered a Crosstrek and this video shows some of why I went with the Bronco. The stock Crosstrek's approach angle isn't very good and I knew my wife wouldn't be happy with me hacking the front bumper on a new car; also the AWD system is great in some conditions but loose steep climbs aren't one of them. On the other hand the standard Eyesight system is pretty good, with Ford you only get lane keep assist and emergency braking standard. I also considered an Outback (too big), and a Forester (not enough power). I'm curious to see what the Crosstrek Wilderness will be like, but they'll probably put too much plastic on the exterior. The problem is the lack of choices in a compact off-roader, there just aren't that many options, especially if you don't want to buy a Jeep product. If Toyota would put some of the 4wd tech from the 4runner into the Rav4 Prime they'd have a serious contender.
@TrailMilitia2 жыл бұрын
A lot of solid points but when it comes to something truly capable I don’t think their will be much to compete with the Bronco Sport , so I think you made a solid choice. Crosstreks are fun cars with a nice form factor to mod and make them into little soft roaders. The problem is that their motors are underpowered. People act as if this is a Subaru vs Bronco Sport contest. As if it was fair in any way. The Bronco is amazing, and I'm not going to denigrate it. But this is an apples to oranges comparison for fun, not a serious test for people comparing brands. If you want apples to apples then the Top Line of the Bronco Sport, the only one with decent clearance and lockers, the Badlands, should be pitted against the Top of the Line soft roading Subaru, which is the Wilderness, which comes stock with these advantages over all the other Subaru's much as Badlands has advantages over all the other Bronco Sports. The Wilderness has higher clearance out of the box, and with aftermarket wheels mine has over 10" WITHOUT a lift. And that clearance is via extended struts that allow for more controlled articulation range. That means feet on the ground before the strut runs out of length. It has a trail cam, lower gearing, a transmission oil cooler, better approach and departure angles than the other models in the trim, although the Bronco probably does better here, I haven't really examined it, but the Outbacks are longer so it becomes an issue. Forester Wilderness are less powered, but have better angles being shorter. At any rate, that is the Apples to Apples test. An Outback Wilderness vs a Sport Badlands. Yes, that locker is a game changer, but the and I wish Subaru would do something like that. But the Wilderness is a very capable vehicle. I own one and I've never had to air down or put it into Xmode because the standard mode which is actually right in the middle of the two X modes logic wise, has always been the best traction logic, or at least good enough to get the job done. I'm not saying either is better. But I see all these comments Oh, the Sports are better. Most sports don't have that clearance, they don't have lockers. And NONE of them have anywhere near the towing capacity of any Forester or Outback with a similar motor. So don't get too excited that the TOP of the line Sport managed to slightly outclass one of the less capable models of Subaru. The fact that it was even there, and did what it did, was a total win. That car had about half the usable torque of the Bronco, and still managed to keep up with it. That's a win. Just sayin. Databyter

A CVT transmission is shit for crawling, a CVT simply cannot provide low speed torque that's why even though tricked out custom, the Crosstek was constantly having to rev the motor, going from not moving to spinning its wheels digging a hole, nothing in-between for a CVT. Too much of this type of driving will destroy a CVT, once the belt starts slipping you soon destroy the belt & pulleys & the CVT is trashed. CVT is lightweight it can run forever IF you never put any load demands on it, passenger highway driving, Subarus in rallies are unmatched for weight & low center of gravity performance, but they are also known for blowing up engines & transmissions to unrepairable when pushed. All Subaru did was make a transmission that's shit for offroad work acceptably on dirt roads, & sell it to idiots who only freeway drive but like to pretend they can go off-road on more than a flat gravel road.

Gotta do a stock Forester wilderness VS Bronco now, those are probably the most comparable.

Great videos. Superior concept and compelling direction and production. It’s like the MMA of off-road vids and I was at the edge of my seat!! Here’s my question. I live in far SW Utah and have a Badlands. There are so many great trails. Sometimes I scrape the felt off the bottom and have collected other scrapes and dings. If I wanted to raise it to minimize damage do you have suggestions as to the height to raise it and kits that are effective? Thanks!
@TrailMilitia2 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! As for your question I know the Bronco Sport doesn’t have a ton of choices when it comes to getting a bit taller. ReadyLift has a 1.5 SST Lift Kit that would definitely help you out without compromising the way it handles. I would stay away from the Daystar one I heard some not so positive things about it

This was great. Basically it was really about that composure and both vehicles were able to get it but the Bronco sport seems to have had a slight advantages if one could consider "stock" a slight advantage. Bronco Sport owners should be very happy and Subaru folks who are serious about off roading only need to do a few things to play.

After two blown WRX engines, I drifted over to the Bronco Sport Badlands. Loving it so far except for small build quality issues. What broke on her truck at the end? Fender liner?

suprised the CVT in the crosstreck didnt crap out. CVT trans are not meant for this stuff despite being marketed for this type of terrain. Few more runs like this and he will be replacing that transmission. The bronco trans is more capable. Both vehicles did awesome though!

I'm impressed by the Crosstrek. It didn't sound stock, but I didn't hear him specify any engine upgrades. The Crosstrek Sport's NA 2.5L boxer is down about 70 hp and a full *100 lb-ft* to the 2.0L EcoBoost in the Badlands. I don't know why Subaru discontinued the Forester XT. I'd love to see the new Crosstreks and Foresters get a 24F option.

Crosstrek just had minor bolt on intake / exhaust and yes this isn’t a perfect apples to apples comparison it’s just showing how capable a modded Subaru compares to a stock Sport

Note that was not just the Bronco Sport but the Badlands! This one is different than the regular Sport, it has a 2.0 engine with dual clutch with liquid cooling transmission, the regular Bronco Sport only comes with a 1.3 turbo engine and it does not have a dual clutch with cooling liquid like the Badlands does, also the Bronco Sport Badlands is 10k more than the regular Bronco 40k, the Subaru 30k

Great job!! Very impressed with baby Bronco and even the CrossTek, though part way through I remember hearing it was taking a break the tranny was happy. Around the 27 minute mark, he noted the little bit of plastic underneath and said something like it will be better after raising it. How is she going to raise it? Tires? Lift? Is there lifts for the baby Bronco? Thanks again for the video.

People buy the Bronco Sport for a reason. Ours....reasonable off road ability and traction for casual off roading and especially dealing with Alberta winters. Comfy to drive on the highway,okish mpg. She wanted the Bronco....till we drove a few. Ford did cheap out on a few things with the Sport but overall it's a great little suv and probably perfect for the wife's needs. Not to mention she gets lots of comments on the looks(hers is a Badlands in Kodiak brown with retro looking rims).
