As a straight male, the abuse gay people have, and continue to receive just goes against humanity. We are all people. We all breathe the same air. Bleed the same blood. And we love who we love. I’ll never understand why someone can be so negatively affected by whom someone else loves to the point they wish harm, or commit harm to them. I absolutely love Jimmy and his songs are incredibly powerful. Everyone deserves to be happy without fear.

I was born in 1987, and I’m currently 37. The legacy of the societal attitudes which developed as a result of the legislation, politicisation, and psychiatric stigmatisation of queer people impacted me terribly even going through school many years later. The shame lives on. But I cannot thank these brave people enough for all they have done. I now support people living with HIV and it feels like I am giving back in some way.

It’s important to have a strong voice and not lose our joy. We have come a long way to get here and at times we need to celebrate that. We deserve it after all this crap.

Highly recommended for persons who are naive enough to believe that “as you long you don’t try to be provocative”, you are respected and safe, some people were exposed to danger to defend everything should be granted for all human beings.

People often forget how our lives were politicised and the hate and discrimination we had to endure throughout the 80s and beyond. And against the backdrop of HIV and AIDS used as a morality stick to beat us with. Part of this video is taken from Framed Youth which Jimmy was part of before he formed Bronski Beat. The band gave us a voice by crossing over to the mainstream charts and showing us as real people who just wanted our fundamental human rights. I was 19 in 1984 and I’m now 59. We can’t be complacent and must keep pushing for all gay and trans rights throughout the world xx

You are forgetting the Tom Robinson Band and 'Glad to be Gay'. Much more direct and political. There were straight people who didn't click what Smalltown Boy was about.

Powerful and a much needed reminder. When I was coming out in 80s London I can remember someone who was a regular at the LGBT pub (The Bell in London's Kings Cross) wearing a leather jacket with a big hand painted pink triangle and the words Never Again on it. I soon figured out the pink triangle represented what gay men were made to wear under the nazis in Germany and that many of them along with Jews, Romanies and Jehovahs Witnesses died later in the concentration camps or labour camps. It was a strong reminder that in order to understand prejudice we all need to investigate, understand and express the history of both how hate is directed and how we collectively overcome and triumph over it. This video helps in that and does so in a charmingly international way. Thank you.

Samuel Luiz's light was taken by violence in a brutal homophobic attack in Spain on July 3, 2021. His memory, like the message in "Why?" by Bronski Beat, reminds us to keep asking: why the hate? Why the intolerance? His name has become a symbol of the ongoing fight for justice and equality for the LGTBIQ+ community. Now, as his trial approaches, may we never have to ask "why" again.

40 years on and the battle for rights is still far from won. Trans rights is currently going through its own version of Section 28. This timely reminder from one of the icons and pioneers of LGBTQIA + rights brings us back to the big question. Why? How many more Smalltown Boys must there be before It Ain't Necessarily So, we can all Feel Love and there is no more Screaming.

"Name (us) an illness" but the illness is hate for the other, fear of love and freedom that infects so many. To every LGBTQIA+ person and ally in the film - and elsewhere - who has marched and fought for the rights to be, to love, to thrive and cure the illness that infects so many, "thank you" and I fight with you.

As a heterosexual who has alternative sexual friends. What does this video have to do with the anniversary of the single,. Homosexually has been legal (in the UK) since 1967 with the age of consent being reduced to 16yrs (the same as heterosexuals). You will always have Hate crimes if it is against the social "norms" no matter who, what, or cultural identity you are.(or identify as).
@LuckyDipster2Ай бұрын
Music and politics have always been intertwined, especially with Jimmy. Just because hate crimes aren't a new thing, it doesn't mean they should be ignored. Music is a powerful tool when artists want to convey a message.

Am gay man who struggled years to be myself..l done what was expected of me worked hard have 3 Beautiful Sons.. l separated from my Wife not for me l really wanted her to get a Man who would Love her as a Woman deserves..Sad thing is yes I've had couple relationships didn't work out maybe guilt or they just not the one.. Fk even have had to preposels might one day accept the one guy who always sticks around waiting for me.
@comealongcomealong448012 күн бұрын
@tonylynch8930 You'd know about the older generations of gay men who often followed societal expectations of them - marrying and having a family. And who still do of course in conservative cultures. /I guess one aspect of building a gay partnership now is that all the 'couple models' you unconsciously observed and absorbed growing up were male/female. That's the 'language' and relationship dynamics you learned in a way. It may be that some sessions with an allied therapist could help you see your identity and choices today more authentically. It's great to hear about your three sons here 😊
