Pionus owners reply below! What has been your experience owning one?
@deborahlevy43763 жыл бұрын
I have one and she’s around a year old. She was supposedly hand raised - but she was very shy. I wouldn’t give her a 4/5 for handability still. We’ve made progress and she can enjoy scritches... and she will step up 75% of the time when asked. But if she’s not in the mood for something she will bob her head then lunge and nip/bite. Her bites are very strong. My hopes were to be able to harness train her and be able to take her around with me... but that seems highly unlikely at this point. :/ She is definitely very quiet as parrots go and really just wants to coexist in my space. :) She doesn’t have any pronounced personality yet- but it may change as she goes through puberty from what I’ve heard.
@Fivesaflock3 жыл бұрын
@@deborahlevy4376 She could be moody for sure. I would suggest trying to reward her when she does step up. Give her a treat or something, so to her, stepping up isn't something to be annoyed at but something to look forward to. But overall, Pionus aren't petty or scritchy birds. Moreso sits on your shoulder all day.

@@deborahlevy4376 Pionus are different than other parrots, if you understand them they will be much more interactive with you. You've got to read "The Practical Pionus" by Russ Shade, he explains all about them from his years of experience in their native Ecuador and raising many of them. The book should be available from him directly at www.the-practical-pionus.com/

I’ve had my bronze wing ‘Raku” and with these videos I finally understand so much of his behaviors. Unfortunately I lost the ability to scratch, pet and handle Raku because he was sick with aspergillosis which is a deadly disease. My husband was able to treat him for almost a year with antibiotics and anti fungal medication giving him doses twice a day. Raku was not at all thrilled with the treatments but he LIVED. Now he is no longer the cuddly sweetheart he was. He prefers to spend his time with my 30 year old Senegal. I miss the cuddles and scratches but I am great full we were able to save his life. 7:42

I love Pionus! :D They are such lovely birds and if I felt like I had the proper amount of time to devote to one (and a bigger place), I would love to consider having one. The bronze wing in particular is the most gorgeous, but I also really like the Dusky pionus. Right now I have 4 Bourke's parrots and they are perfect for me, given my work schedule, small apartment and that I'm the only one in the house. They are such gentle birds with sweet voices, so independent but absolutely curious and loving in their own ways even though they don't like being touched or don't like to step up! I give them to fly and explore after I get home from work every day so they are very happy with the way things are. I'm afraid I wouldn't have the time to devote to a pionus, but maybe someday. :)

I paid €700 for mine, so way cheaper than what you guys in the USA pay. Good video, thanks for sharing. John

Our Bronze Wing Pionus has gotten more and more awesome over time as we've learned how to motivate and train him and as he's learned to trust us :) He's gotten super sweet and loves lots of cuddles 🥰 For a while he became a one person bird, but through other people spending more time around him, giving him treats and doing training with him he's getting better with other people in our family! He models quite a bit after our slightly older parrot, a Yellow Naped Amazon. It probably makes him a little louder than a lot of Pionus, but he's also a good talker and learned most of his first words from our Zon :) He loves to play around on and with toys, etc, like our Zon. Both of them especially love hanging from toys and pretending to fight them 😂 Our Zon can be harder to have around while we're doing certain things than our BW. Our Zon often just HAS to get into what we're doing or won't leave us alone so we can work on things. Also he can get into trouble so fast and knows how to sneak! So we have to watch him pretty closely when he's out. We can have our BW with us more easily a lot more of the time because he's not as rambunctious and doesn't tend to get into things around the room. (Our birds are flighted. ) Also, our BW just gets more and more beautiful! He's 2 years old now.

Btw your account is really helping me with research!! Thank you in advance!
