Tookta V it’s very hard to read pionus body language but it can depend on multiple things, whether it just wants attention or it’s hungry. It can also mean its trying to say something he’s heard before but it’s very uncommon.

LOL awwww...thats what my sun conure does when she attempts to do something and fails 😂 ...for example: she goes to land on a perch but botches the landing in a funny way OR if she gets scared of something that she quickly realizes was nothing to spazz out about after the fact 😅😅 she will then immediately turn to me to see if i saw her shenanigans and once she sees me chuckling at her she gives me the "you saw nothing human!" type of look! lolol ❤

We have a female white capped piones. We got her when she was 6 months old. We purchased her at a reputable pet shop who loved all their birds and they were all loose in the store. Even tho they said she was a male, when she was 19 years old he laid eggs...LOL. Which she did for about 5 years. She is now 31 and loves to be petted only by me. When our dog had 7 puppies she imitated those puppies. Thank goodness we found homes for them all. It took her a while to stop. She imitates my m mother-in-laws laugh. She will squeal really loud when someone comes to the house which causes our dog to go ballistic, so she will do it when she gets bored just to rial her up. She's never been sick. We just love her. She does say pretty Robie which is her name. And the wolf whistle. We just love all her quirks.

my maxi (he's only 1) likes to climb my bed every morning to cuddle, and if I drift asleep he'll sit by me (or on me) and preen. He can be occupied by whatever's outside the window or toys, occasionally stopping by my work desk to socialize and get scritched. He mimics laughter a lot, he'll laugh along with people, and generally responds in his own bird language and tone when talked to, he knows only a few words, and will try to sing along a little if I do. Gets totally fascinated by whistling. He follows you around and doesn't like being alone. Loves baths, he makes water/bubbling noises when he gets one. A little mischievous. He loves being with people, a total sweetie. He's pretty playful too. By no means antisocial, if you give him hours of attention he'll probably like it, just not as crazy energy level wise as other birds. Even his loud is not screeching loud, he has a screeching voice but that's only if he's scared bad. His chirps are quiet enough. He seems very intelligent. Just be careful don't give them mirrors all the time cause then he can get aggressive, and will just stay mad lol

I got a budgie 1 year ago and did want to get a Cockatoo until I realized that they are a more difficult and havee a tendency to be aggressive. I am getting a baby sibling and I personally don't like more difficult house animals. Now I want to get a pionus.

I just had to put my Maximilian pi down on December 9th. My heart is shattered. My pionus, Syd, was a wonderful bird. I had her 23 years/10 months. She was 25.5 years when she passed away. She was very independent and could amuse herself, but loved attention. I attribute her longevity to good genetics and diet. She used to eat Kaytee Exact Organic pellets. She was never sick until the last 4 months with a cloacal tumor. She only said my name but I tell you this...they are very expressionate with their behaviors and mannerisms. Pionus nips do draw blood, but they don't injury bones, tendons or ligaments. They could draw blood. I knew when to give space. Syd would either do a "big yawn", puff up her whole body to appear bigger. She did her "turkey strut" on top of her cage or if on the ground. On the ground, she would be just fine, but her turkey strut on top of the cage meant to back off. She was very territorial of her cage. She loved her shower with a spray bottle while I vacuumed around her cage. Nutriberries and certain people food were given. They do prefer to hand out quietly on top of her cage taking in their surrounding. They really aren't for cuddling. Most of Syd's life she shared walls in an apartment or a condo. Never once was she an issue to my neighbors. She only got loud when my cockatiel got loud (cockatiels are noise-makers). I can attest to the toys as mentioned in this video. Syd wanted wood toys, leather to chew on (empty toilet paper rolls were her favorite). She never got into acrylic toys that couldn't be decimated. She was a very happy bird. She had annual avian exam well-checks. One thing vital to mention...vet care can be very expensive for birds; especially the blood work. The blood work was around $400 annually...to make sure she was healthy. I didn't have a cage the sizes mentioned. I was smaller. Syd had full liberty. The only time she was locked in her cage was when I left the house. She could go in and out all day (I'm retired). The rewards I had from Syd far outweighed problems. To me, it was the best decision I've made in life. I did not take the decision lightly. It took me 2 years of bird shows, countless discussions with breeders and asking vet opinions. I did not live a lifestyle conducive to a parrot when I started wanting one. I had to ask myself "Am I able to commit to 25 years?" I did when I was psychologically ready. Do that before you adopt. Parrots should only be re-homed if there is a situation such as allergies, etc. It isn't fair to the bird. That's often how behavioral problems start. I met Syd at 5 months. I didn't bring her home until she was almost 21 months old. *Please consider these things vefore you venture into parrot ownership. You won't have regrets (chances are) if you are prepared to give 25 years.* If you travel frequently for your job or like taking 7 day vacations (or longer), don't get a parrot. The longest duration I was away from Syd in all those years, was 8 days...twice in her life. I prefer being home with them over traveling. I would start missing her by the 2nd day. Pionus are actually completely different species from each other. It's similar to conure verieties. They look similar in shape but they vary in color and size depending on their species.

I love my pionusses. They are gentle birds that keep to their own very well. They want attetion, but they are not as needy as other parrots. If they go a day without attention thats fine as well. Provided that they have enough toys and branches ofcourse :)

I rescued a beautiful Bronze Winged Pionus when my club was cleaning out a hoarders house. Merlin was a bit wild, but was absolutely no trouble and he had that wonderful baby powder smell that Amazons do. These are the perfect pet parrot! Not extremely loud, are able to entertain themselves, don’t have a vicious bone in their bodies and are really beautiful. I would even recommend them as a first time bird with some advanced reading. Not brilliant talkers but they do talk a lot of the time. Mine did. Really nice birds!

I think I have watched this video about 20 times if not more!! I've been waiting for my pionus baby for over 4 years and your video is what made me want one so bad that I did not give in to get any other bird (I do have a conure and three cockatiels already) My husband tried to make me get a African gray I said no I want this pioneus blue-headed.. Also as she mentioned about nuts and behavioral issues. This is why i'm a big advocate of not feeding too much sunflower too your parrots. Because there is a history of birds having plucking issues and other aggressive behavioral issues. When given too much sunflower seeds.

This is literally the best Pionus video I’ve seen. I’ve been considering a bird for a while now and this is super helpful. Initially I was looking at the Ringneck but due to the fact I live full-time in an RV, this bird may be better. I have a male blue head...everything you've said here is right on the money, including all the things you've said you noticed in blue heads. Mine does have his beast moments and I never connected it with nuts which he eats every day. I always chalked it up to him being hormonal and me not being his favorite person. I'm going to limit those and see if it helps! One of the things that I've found challenging with pionus is that because they don't like to be cuddled, it can be very hard when they need to be restrained for any kind of grooming or medical treatments. But I've also found that, despite their reputation for sensitive systems, they are pretty hardy birds. Also, mine does have a scream nearly every day, and it is VERY loud, but it's short lived so easier to tolerate than most parrot screams. Personally I think they do better in a calmer household with adults since they are sensitive, don't like too much commotion and they can bite really hard when they get moody. They are great birds for the right household!

I also agree with everything you both say; i have a female blue-headed pionus. I've had her for 8 years and she is 11 years old. She is very territorial, she's a big strutter on our couch, on the bed, on the banister, etc., but when I talk sweetly to her I can usually win her over. She is not playful, but does love to have her head scratched. She is sweet in her own way. She will scream when my husband comes home at 5pm; she does like him the best- it may be more about the time of the day, but that's the pattern I see. My son is the same age as my bird, and he is extremely respectful to her and offers her treats which she readily takes, but she will dive bomb him at random and bite him out of nowhere. It is a problem!! We have other pets (2 chill dogs and a cat) and our parrot has the upper hand over everyone- because we have other pets I do not want to clip her wings. She is a great flyer and I think it is important for her to feel the freedom of where she can be, but it is really not working out overall. We separate her from my son at all times, but occasionally someone (my absent-minded husband) will leave the bedroom door open and then she will attack. I do wonder if things would improve if we got a male, but unfortunately I'm not able to take that on. I give her a walnut every morning as I open her cage and this always makes her happy to see me and let me access her food and water and open her cage for the day, but I will consider not giving her nuts and replace that treat with a piece of fruit and see if things change for the better. Excellent introduction of the species. I've been in the avian field myself for around 30yrs now. Having "hands on" experience with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey. And have also owned or should i say "been owned" by many various species of parrots. I currently have a Jardines, Red Bellied, Senegal, White Capped Pionus, and Alexandrine Parrot. Yes i love my Poicephalus parrots and they make great pets just like Pionus do. However, i agree with you that Pionus are often over looked in favor of the more colorful Amazon parrots which they are close relatives of. The differences between the two though are like night and day. I often tell folks that Amazon's are FAR louder, more apt too bite due to hormones, and are require FAR more attention. Where as Pionus are indeed quieter which is really subjective because no parrot is perfectly quiet. As well as being more independent in there interactions with you. They also won't bite you hard but rather will turn there backs too you if they dislike you. Or will simply take your finger in their beak and move it away from them if they don't want to be touched. I love all my birds but my favorite "fids" that's parrot lingo for kids folks. Are my Senegal and White Capped Pionus. My Senegal just started developing a plucking problem on her back she's perfectly feathered everywhere. Except her back area is down too the downy feathers. So we are working on correcting that. These larger birds are NOT for inexperienced owners or "first timers" as i like too call it. They require A LOT of attention and care. Nutrition being the first and foremost important thing. My birds get a mix of Harrisons, Roudybush, Zupreem, & Lafebers pellets along with a non-sunflower conure seed mix. And plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. Regular baths are also a necessity for plumage especially in winter time when dry air can wreak havoc on a birds feathers. And plenty of various hardwood toys and shreddable items too keep them occupied. The best first birds for folks i would say are Budgies but even they need attention as they are small parrots themselves. But they are less apt too develop "behavioral problems" then there larger parrot family members. Just know what you are getting involved with beforehand through educating yourself online or with books. And you should have a greater understanding of what too provide for these beautiful feathered jewels.

Sounds like your a really good parrot keeper (I don’t know I if you do or not but watch BirdTricks there great) I would just change that you don’t give them 5 different brands and just one (BirdTricks & tops are the best in my opinion there cold pressed) and you can also give them sprouts (and don’t clip if they are currently) I completely agree with every thing else 😊

The person in the video mentioned pionus parrots love water. This is an understatement! My pi to a swig from her water bottle with every pellet. She preferred her foods soft. All that water makes from more watery droppings.

I would still try rescues. Sometimes we hafto drive a good distance to find our bird. Often the rescue who is eager to find a good home may meet you half way. Adopting ANY type of parrot feels amazing! Even though you'd like a pionus don't limit yourself. There are thousands of wonderful birds that need homes and fate will lead you to your campanion ❤

I've had difficulty finding Pionus parrots from sanctuaries, rescues (I suppose that's a good thing) and even breeders.

When I'm ready in my life to have a pet I'm definitely going to go with a pionus. My family used to have a sun conure when I was younger. I really loved our sun conure but the only thing I didn't like was the amount of energy and how loud he was but I feel a pionus has every quality that I like in birds but while not having a lot of the qualities I really don't like.

Your pionus will bring tremendous happiness and reward if you bring up a youngster correctly. My birds fascinated me. The was no "novelty". The fascinated me at least once a day. Countless laughs everyday. My maxi pi was the love of my life. She's been gone 18 days. I can't get over she's gone. We were never separated this long.

Really great video though, I like the format, length, and information. I've been reading up on Pionus a bit recently but it's hard to find more than what I already learned 15 years ago (when it was much, much harder to find species-specific information than it is today), that they are kinda quiet, calm, that males can get aggressive and that they can get nervous, etc. People seem to find, in general, that there is much more difference between individuals than between species, except that the smallest (dusky and white-capped) are more feisty. I also read in one of Rosemary Low's books (the parrot companion), as well as online, that especially bronze-wings can be highly nervous and prone to stress. I really wanted to get a dusky and bronze-wing, either two females or a male-female pair, but I want so many different parrots that I am now reconsidering. They are beautiful and unique (especially the dusky and bronze-wing, IMO), but with their calm and possibly nervous nature, they might not be a good fit for my future flock. I wonder how they would compare with greys, especially the timneh.

@@PippyPets I'm in the process of learning about parrots as pets, and my girlfriend is sort giving me the go now! These parrots seem so friendly and chill. Do the pionus-birds do well as single birds given that they have human friends, or do they need to be in pairs? How do they cope with living with someone working full time? We're two adults, no kids, no other pets, and there's almost always someone home for 15-16 hours a day, plus mostly all day on weekends.

Great video, you share such detailed great info that many other people don't mention. A pionus is definitely way too big for me on my apartment setting but it was great information and the best video I've see on these guys. I see you have several vids on parrotlets and i had considered one but they were very hard to any find locally and pricey. I decided to go with a young male blue budgie (named Merlin) and have been very happy with my choice. Would love watching more vids on budgies or other smaller sized birds. Really curious how lovebirds are as pets, although I'm thinking they are louder than budgies so probably not as good for my situation. According to a study of wild parrot diets, the Maximilian parrot diet consists of 70% seeds in the wild. Seeds (70%), flowers (20%), grain (8%), and fruit pulp (2%). I get that we shouldn't feed any larger parrot only seeds, but after decades of this, it's getting repetitive, and has made people think seeds are basically junk food or treats, while for small birds like budgies, they are a natural staple, and for larger birds, they are still an important part. (Note though, that of course not all seeds have the same nutritional value.) What I really don't understand is why people immediately go to soybean-based pellets as the staple diet, probably without even looking at the ingredients, and feeding them to all species more or less the same way. I have never heard advice from any article, video or book saying "don't feed your parrot only pellets", while pellets are a highly unnatural diet and need to be used with thought and care, just like seeds.

Birds don't like change. They like consistency and stability. Now I moved 4 times in the 24 years I had my pionus; but she lived at 2 homes for 3.5 years. One of our homes she was at for 13 years. The last home (where I currently live), she was here for 6.5 years. It took a little adjustments with the change. If you are going to relocate frequently being in the service, you might want to wait to get your pionus until you've completed your tour of duty.

I would keep usually 4 toys in my maxi pi's cage. I kept 3 toys on the top of her cage to play with. You don't want to clutter the cage hindering movement. You want to rotate toys so they don't get bored. I always kept a larger toy in front of the top perch where she liked to sleep at night. It was comparable to having a blanket to cozy up to. She slept behind the toy so she wasn't in view. *Special note: never give your pionus a mirror. It promotes aggression with "the other bird in the mirror. They can act out against you.*

I come from a parrot family. Most recently, my folks have had a CAG, a TAG, and a blue and gold macaw. I'm off on my own now and boy do I miss them. The thing is, I live alone in an apartment and work an 8-5 job. I think I'd be able to get away with the noise without much of a problem, but I worry for the mental and emotional health of a bird left alone during the workday. When I'm not at work I'm almost always home, I don't have a big or busy social life. I would more than make it up with quality time evenings and weekends. Are Pionus independent enough to entertain themselves all day on their own with just toys in their cage and a TV running, even if he's alone and not paired off with another bird? Some days I come home midday for an hour-long lunch, and some days I stay at work. First and foremost, I want a bird that is going to thrive, be happy, healthy, well-adjusted, and live a full and vibrant life. I don't want my desire for a companion bird to supersede the birds own well being in any amount or respect. if I need to get a budgie or a cockatiel I probably could do that, but I'm more of a bigger parrot person. And also the type that binges Netflix all weekend and stuff like that so if these have a couch potato instinct it might be a good match. I would welcome your thoughts, or anybody's with experience..I know my lifestyle would not be conducive to something more needy (and noisy) like an African grey.

Matt314159 It’s hard to come up with a bigger breed that can live apartments, well there is the mustache parakeet but they like to live with other birds but if you get it alone from the start or get one that has lived alone before it might work. But there is a perfect breed I can come up with but these are small birds I’m thinking about the kakariki, the kakariki is a curious lovable bird. They are quiet and when they do talk it’s not louder than a humans voice, speaking of talking these birds are hard to train into speaking words, you can but it’s reaaally hard. The kakariki can be alone with the tv running in the background they do love biting on things like toys they are so curious that hand taming them can take up to 1-2 weeks, which is reeeeaally short. They aren’t very cuddly but they like to sit on your head and shoulders but look out they can bite your ears haha I got that from experience. But like I said these are smaller bird 27-29 cm are normal the males being bigger than the females.

Bourke Parakeets are most active early in the morning and evening. If left alone they nap a lot during the day, making them good for day-time working people. It's wise to get TWO so they always have a companion when left alone. No person can be present 24/7, so two or more birds is always best. Bourkes are also sweet singers, not loud or obnoxious and hand fed Bourkes are very interactive and affectionate. Admittedly, I'm biased as they are my favorites and my specialty. @@es205 if you're in the US, there's only really one main breeder of all species of pionus: Patty's Pets LLC in Florida. You can go either way with getting a single bird or multiple, but a single is more likely to bond with their human counterpart. Multiples will bond with each other more often.

They *could* be similar in size to a Goffins Cockatoo, but it depends on the birds in question. They’re a bit smaller than a Blue Headed Pionus and larger than a White Capped Pionus. A Blue Headed Pionus is just a bit smaller than a Maximilian Pionus - so essentially, they’re in between the size of the two Pionus in the video’s thumbnail. Hope that helps.

I am thinking of getting a Pionus and raising it from a baby. I will be getting it from a breeder. I have had a bit of experience because my twin sister had a Dusky Pionus for a while. Most of the time he was quiet but when he screamed for her it was very loud. I loved his quirky, fun personality. I am also wondering if they can to tricks, be harness trained? I am sure they can, but I am trying to teach myself that just because the bird is laid-back doesn't mean they are not smart or can't be trained. I love your videos and hope help me with my question. Random stranger here - not sure how things are given the pandemic, but in normal times, it's a good sign if the breeder wants you to come and interact with a bird before you make any kind of commitment. Personally, I don't trust breeders who won't let you interact with a prospective pet until you've already given them your money.

Hi! Puberty is the worst stage in terms of behaviors. This happens with all birds, but for pis specifically it starts at around 2 years and can last for up to a year. They have a tendency to be more bitey at this time. When they are fully matured, they go through a hormonal period I believe twice a year (and replicate similar behaviors to puberty). All birds are different in terms of personality, so it's hard to say exactly what your bird would be like with all the attention and training. What I can say is, if you work with your bird from a young age and socialize them well, that you have a higher chance of a well-rounded bird. As far as male vs female, as long as you cover its cage 12 hours a night and don't provide anything that would trigger nesting behaviors (no Happy Huts, etc) then the chances of a female laying an egg are slim. Males have a tendency to be more grumpy. There are a couple of Facebook groups dedicated to pionus parrots, and there is a lot of wonderful information on there from pi owners. :) I highly recommend joining them!

Apparently for pionus, the only way to have them conceive is to put a nest. So don't put a nest and you shouldn't have eggs.

A great video with much info. I have four Blue Heads, two hand raised. Each with their own personality. My biggest problem is getting them to eat veggies and greens and off of the seeds. I am fighting with that.

I rescued a white cap pionus, Piccolo, and he is pretty much terrified of a lot of things. He'd been kept in a cage for 9 years fed only peanuts and sunflower seeds and just learning to fly again. When I got him he was in a cage with a mountain of poop under him. My Quaker and he are like watching a quick fighting jet and a B52 fly. We call piccolo a brick with wings. Our avian vet wants him flying to keep his respiratory system healthy and for a healthy weight. Our avian vet is giving him a vitamin shot every week. I totally agree that one should never get a parrot if you are wanting a bird that talks. More than likely they will mimic something horrid like a microwave dinging, a kitten crying, the dog yapping. We searched all over looking for a kitten for around 2 days before figuring out we were being fooled. My Quaker makes kissing sounds and then bites...when he's in a mood. Parrots are moody and they can bite. Both my guys have serious cage aggression. Just have to respect their space. Yay! I'm so happy you like Harrisons. My husband set up fig tree play area. Thanks for the great video. This is all new to me. We rescue roosters so a bite or 2 or 3 doesn't bother us.
