My “starter” parrot was actually a scarlet macaw, I was struggling so bad and I felt horrible because I felt as if I let the bird down. But I ended up devoting a lot more time into studying and learning body language and after a year of owning her I got her to be calm with me and step up. I now own a scarlet macaw and a hahns macaw

I had a cockatiel and it was pretty much like having a tiny flying cat. Mine was very cuddly, but also very temperamental, if you didn't cuddle him exactly how he wanted he would let you know. Never bit me though only pecking with its beak while making noises and when i then stopped cuddle it took about half a second and he was asking for more cuddle. He talked a whole lot and he loved walking inside empty potato chip bags and he could sit inside there making all kinds of silly noises for half an hour, i think it was the reflective surface inside as he was pretty obsessed with mirrors. And he loved to drop things on the floor, just for me to pick it back up so he could throw it back down again and he never got tired of it. When i had visitors he would always land on the head of the ones who where a bit scared of him, it seemed like he knew it and liked to show who's the boss. I let him fly around in the living room almost all the time, just closed the cage if i had to open windows and such. He made a lot of sounds though, some quite loud noises, but usually just funny noises and he talked a whole lot of nonsense and repeatingly saying hi to himself.

@Fivesaflock
@Fivesaflock 3 жыл бұрын
Beginner is relative. Parrots are not beginner pets, but for how advanced parrots are, there's still some parrots that are better introductory parrots than others. Keeping a Cockatiel is way easier to keep than say, an Eclectus which has specific dietary needs, just as an example.

No such thing as starter birds as far as I'm concerned. They live too long to choose an "easy" bird if you are passionate about them. Get the bird you're in love with. Don't settle for less. And adopt from rescues when possible. Baby birds aren't developed and can change when they mature. I was 30 when I got my African grey, also my first bird ever. He was 20 at the time. Yeah, he makes sounds. Yeah he bit when we got him. You know what you're getting into.

@Fivesaflock
@Fivesaflock 3 жыл бұрын
Quakers are super high energy and need a ton of attention, but they're also one of the hardiest parrots you can possibly get that they're an invasive species. Don't know much about White Eye conures specifically but a lot of conures are pretty similar so you're looking at a really loud large bird in a smaller package. You can't go wrong with either imo. I think your final decision should be to meet up with breeders and get an actual feel for both parrots. Individual personalities can vary greatly even within the same species.

I laughed when you mentioned cockatiels as indipendent and you have to work hard to build their trust. My experience with my cockatiels have been the complete opposite. Ate from my hand day one. Let out day 2. Day 3 asked for scitches and preens my beard. My male is like glue on me 24/7 follows me around everywhere. Has to eat when I eat, shower when I shower, sleep when I sleep and so on. Most of the day he just wanna chill on me pressed against my cheek while sitting on my chest or shoulder and ask for scritches. He rarely wants to sit on a perch unlessI am being annoying by moving my body a lot but that perch has to be at most half a meter away otherwise he thinks I am too far away. I think it is important to keep in mind that parrots just like people are individuals and are usually very different from eachother. Some are more trusting, some are more bitey, some are more active and so on.

@@caseysmith5888 just be patient. I have had 3 cockatiels and I have been extremly lucky with each. Never been more than 2 days untilntheybsit on my shoulder. All sorts of good advice here. Nick Morganelli and his wife ran a parrot shop in Winston-Salem for many years (retired years ago and sold the store), and he and his wife were FANTASTIC with their birds, raising babies & breeding. They always let potential customers handle the birds in their shop (those that were safe/socialized enough to do so) for the same reasons you mention. Just discovered your channel today, and I like the "vibe" coming from you and the pretty lady. Interest, passion, and care for the animals as well as the owners (know how to care for your bird properly). Just like "Papa Nick" and his wife always did all those years ago.

When I was a teenager, I fostered a green cheek conure named Buddy, & I loved him. We use to foster cats & dogs until they could find a home but it just so happened that Buddy needed a foster, and we were able to take him into our home. He was my 1st and only bird thus far, so I didn't know what to expect, but he was such a cool little birdie! He would cuddle in the top of my shirt, near the neck area, and then pop his little head out! Sometimes he would just cuddle quietly so that when he did pop his head out, it would startle people, and they couldn't stop laughing! We did eventually find a home for Buddy and I cried but I was heading to nursing school and then working 12 hr shifts for many years. However, now that I'm able to work allot less, I'm really thinking about adopting a bird. Buddy use to love to pick at my moles, & would say Buddy good bird, good bird Buddy while cuddling in my shirt, LOL🙂

$30 for a cockatiel? Lol, not here. They're at least $150-250. Petco and Petsmart in my area (San Francisco bay area) charge $350 for them (and they aren't even hand-tamed). They're also very hard to find, except at Petco and Petsmart where they aren't tame. I've been on several waitlists since November and still haven't gotten calls from most places. Very informative video! Still looking for a cockatiel. Been several months and I still haven found the right one for me. But I'll keep trying!

Going back to this video a year later since I've first saw it, just realised the 3 birds we've ended up going with are on this list lol. We've started with a white capped Pionus, followed with a cockatiel and two weeks ago got ourselves a Hahns Mascaw :D no more for now, because Apple (the Hahns) are taking up all our time + 20% more! Thanks for the tips once more!

An alternative mini-Macaw is Eclectus. No noise at home, melodic on public transport, easy to tame provided you have the time, at least 2¨to.3 hours.. About USD 1400. Very attached, to ONE owner. If ignored or kept caged, they will get neurotic and plck out their feathers, which is a dfficult to reverse habit.

I have a green cheek crimson bellied hybrid. You're so right about them. My girl can cuddle all day if you let her. And what a personality. Definitely thinks they're bigger than they are. One minute she wants to cuddle the dogs, the next minute she'll chase them off the bed. But a total sweetheart. She can get loud though if she wants. haha Mine can say some phrases like, step up, good girl, & what are you doing. I want a Hahn's macaw so bad.

Hi to both of you. Thanks for your nice video's. I am looking into a bird for an apartment and as I work 95% of the time from home with a lot of video meetings, I was searching and reading about Pionus species. Thanks for your information, it seems like a solid idea now, at least from your top 5. Will definitely look them up in the better stores over here. The Orange Belly Poicephalus are awesome as well btw, just like your cute Conure.

A word about conures…. They are super sweet to their original owners….. we fostered a green conure one time who had been my grandmothers parrot. He was tolerant of her and mean as a hornet to us. And I definitely agree with the “mean to other birds” comment. He bit one of my Budgies toes off one time…. Mean, McBroski, mean….

My recommendation: encourage adoption from rescue organizations. For example, cockatiels have been overbred; therefore, there are too many being fostered.

What's the most talkative birds in the poicephalus and pionus group?
@Fivesaflock
@Fivesaflock 3 жыл бұрын
I would say Pionus probably are more likely to talk than Poicephalus. My Pionus talks but my brother's Meyer's doesn't talk. But it can vary depending on the bird.
@foxxikatana8893
@foxxikatana8893 3 жыл бұрын
I think it definitely depends on the bird. I am getting an eclectus (adopting him from a shelter) and he talks constantly. But there are many male eclectus that are not as talkative. Definitely don't set expectations for a super talkative bird especially if you are adopting a baby.

My meyers parrot is LOUD. You can walk across the street with all windows and doors closed and hear him screeching and making fire alarm noises. If you have a meyers, do NOT let one of your fire alarms get low on battery. They hear that noise ONE time and that’s all you’ll here for the next 25 years. 💀

Current price for a cockatiel at Petland, Ohio, is $600. Sugarcreek Bird Farm in Ohio charges about $300. Birds from a rescue may "have a past" that makes them a less than ideal starter bird, but can be cheaper and sometimes are a good choice, too.

Love cockatiels. Easy ( for a parrot ), not too noisy, not too time-needy, will ask for head-scratches once tame. Since they are affordable, best begginer parrot. But do look into second-hand cockatiels, because they live quite long ( 15yo+ ), so often they need a new home from someone who can't keep theirs. I bought both my cockatiels over the years as second-hand birds, and they are amasing. It's cheap, they are just as good, they need a new family.

The don't fall asleep while cuddling a conure is very true. In 2003 I fell asleep while cuddling my black capped conure in my bed and rolled over on him. Usually just cuddled on the couch before that night. He was only about 2 years old so he would probably still be alive.

I had a green cheek because I had heard how quiet and sweet they are. He turned out to not be that way.... Lol. He was obsessed with me and screamed for me when he couldn't find me. He hated my husband (the competition) and actually started chasing after him and attacking him..... usually his face. He actually drew blood several times. My husband never admitted it, but I think he became slightly afraid of him. Ugh. Never again.
