@@GenevieveGarbutt so all genes in horses are represented by 2 letters. If they are Capital Letters they are dominant and if they are lower case letters they are recessive. EE means two copies of the Dominant Extension Gene which is responsible for Black pigment. DD means two copies of the Dun Dilution Gene which is responsible for the dorsal stripe extending into the tail, zebra stripes on the legs, dark ear tips etc. By having EE and DD it means the foal will be either a Black or Bay Based Dun and will always pass those genes on to future foals.
