The original video is CRAZY!! It happened so fast and then the video that I watched replayed it slowed down. Can believe he just grabbed it tho. Good on him for saying "I'll be keeping this!'

That scream was blood curdling as hell. My spectral skin crawled from that. 😱

I'm sorry that this happened, and while I can't speak to the pads, I don't understand the criticism of the height of the wall or the lack of a rope. The height is well within the range of all of the bouldering gyms that I've been in and bouldering means NOT using a rope. If you were uncomfortable with it, you didn't have to try the climb. This isn't negligence by the gym, just bad luck and could have happened to anyone.

Oh man, that looks awful. Such a short drop!! Shattered my talus a few years back, and am happy to report that I'm more or less fully recovered four years later. I hope you manage a likewise full recovery!

Wow, this hurts so much to watch and I just did the same thing this past weekend (with not quite so much damage.) I've been climbing 11 years and this was my first major injury, I wish I had a video of my fall to learn from it and get some sort of an idea of why I broke my ankle. I remember feeling like I landed with both feet flat on the ground and then trying to absorb the fall with my knees and rolling back, but instead my left ankle rolled under me when I landed and broke with a nice pop. In your situation, I can attest to the thickness of the pads (I live in Brooklyn and I've been to that gym a number of times) and I don't think that thicker or extra padding would have helped since your body wasn't in a good position during the drop. I would say having the person filming acting as a spotter instead would have been useful, it seems from your scream that you were not comfortable with a fall from that height (which is something to avoid without a spotter, bouldering past your comfort zone.) At least having the spotter would have kept you in a more relaxed position, and they could have guided your torso during the fall so you could have more easily placed your feet. Anyway, accidents will happen, and +Durtle just seems to be trolling. Hopefully this doesn't put you off from the sport of climbing, I'm certainly anxious to get back although I don't think I'll be doing any bouldering for quite some time.

This just looks brutal! My daughter is your age (25) and does this and it scares me to death. Afraid this will happen to her. The scream sounded painful too, ugh! I imagine after the camera was off that had to have you in tears, I imagine it would most people! Want her to see this and be careful.

Guys, I couldn't agree more that the gym should have had extra/thicker crash pads and that the line was a little too high to boulder. But for those who think this was an act of bravery, or something more than just a great climbing route at a really sweet gym, you're mistaken... The provision for "safety equipment" was not available, otherwise I would have used rope like I did for the other top rope lines I climbed earlier that session. -Truly Still Broken and Hoping to Walk Soon- Tia Montalto (9 weeks since the surgery on 8/16/2014)

Firstly, let me say I'm sorry this happened to you and wish you a speedy recovery. Secondly, please remember is that "Climbing is inherently dangerous". We should all heed this warning as climbers, be it indoors or out. I think you blaming the mats it silly as the installation and materials used were completed by professionals who have tested (crash ratings) this things. Clearly you've only climbed at this gym because The Cliffs bouldering is WAY higher and if you are missing holds at the V2 level you're still somewhat a beginner. Lastly, after any injury, you will come back smarter and stronger. Don't let this deter you from the sport of climbing.
