La Sportiva athlete Courtney Sanders suffered a frustrating ankle injury in the prime of sending season. Did it deter her from staying fit and focusing on the bigger picture? Not one bit. Check out this video by Courtney and edited by BearCam Media for some inspiring footage and ideas for keeping it together when everything seems to have fallen apart.

Thank you for creating this. Just broke my cuboid this morning trying to walk on my foot while it was asleep.Thought I had to say goodbye to the gym, but I can see now it's about working around the injury. You're amazing CS!

Incredibly inspired after watching this, thank you for sharing a glimpse into your recovery Courtney! I'm in the midst of recovery from the same injury and was feeling discouraged after having to take time off. Thumbs up for the incorporation of the TRX!

Dealing with a similar injury. I love almost of these training ideas. The only one I'm to scared to try is leading. I'll top rope all day but I do not want to put my self into the position where I can take a whipper and rebreak my ankle coming hard into the wall.

Megan Lubetkin I was about to climb a small climbing wall at a park and I put way to much pressure on my right knee and I dislocated it (I moved my kneecap) and I had an ambulance and I had morphene etc... and I'm still recovering 3 months later

My left wrist was in cast for 3 months after I ruptured my ligaments. I was not able to climb in that condition, so I rode bicycles competitively. Finally the cast was off, but it took me more than 6 months of rehab to finally gain that full range of motion and strength. (this part most people are wrong. They think once cast is off, life is back to usual.) There is a long way to go after the cast is off. Rehab is a painful and frustrating process.

The amount of muscle fibers that can be recruited in a given exercise is in relation to the connections to the motor cortex in the posterior frontal lobe of the brain. Muscles do not get 'physically' stronger from more recruitment but more recruitment will make the exercise stronger/less effort-full.

When you word it more specifically like that, I can certainly agree that what you stated could be quite likely or proven fact. When you stated that, "people who only trained the strength of their right arm also got stronger in their left arm without ever activating the muscle fibers of the left arm," it appeared that you were referring to muscle strength, not motor skill.

I wish I still had that much drive, its great, be careful not to over train and listen to your body, I used to climb a lot long before indoor climbing and ruined my elbow over training and climbing. That said I wish you the best and happy climbing, its a great thing.

I'm pretty new to bouldering and climbing. I recently purchased a weighted shirt from Titin, no I'm not a sales rep. I'm interested in your thoughts about applications for the weighted shirt for training: good, bad, indifferent. It seems like it would add that extra weight without a kettlebell in between your legs. Thanks.

Smaller in the sense of the lifting potential of the athlete in relation to their mass, which is what the discussion is about. What you said is all true but we're not only talking about how big the athlete is.

Evan is correct; it's Neuromuscular Adaptation. This is why power lifters are smaller than body builders; because power and strength training (High intensity/low repetition) allows greater muscle fiber recruitment than hypertrophy training (medium intensity/medium repetitions).
@evanpkto
@evanpkto 11 жыл бұрын
What is strength then? Is lifting more weight because of an efficient motor pattern stronger or are we only stronger if we are lifting more weight because of muscle hypertrophy? Lastly how can you tell the difference without microscopic examination?

Just a Tip to anyone who scared to damage themself by using weights! Weight won't damage your muscles, it is how you use the weight that will damage your body, such as method and technique.

I find this scenario quite plausible for motor skill, but I find it to be unlikely with regard to the size and strength of muscles. I'm open to many ideas, even gaining size and/or strength in muscles that are bound and restricted by a cast, but evidence appears to present opposing results. I've had several limbs in casts and have remained active through these processes. Guess what? My cast bound muscles atrophied and I lost strength. Can someone point me to evidence that supports Evan's view?

Don't worry about getting completely unbalanced by only using right foot technique. Whatever the motor cortex of the left hemisphere learns it transfers over the neural firing pattern for the technical coordination to the opposite side (Yule and Cole 1992). In isolation people who only trained the strength of their right arm also got stronger in their left arm without ever activating the muscle fibers of the left arm. So get out there and train everyone! No excuses.

feel free to believe that yourself, but for others who are more open minded like me and many other people this is interesting. I believe it considering how much we have not discovered about the brain and how it works. Alot of research like this is disregarded and set aside, due to simple straight forward minded people like you. The human body is defying and it would surprise as to what actually goes on when people are committed to what they want to do their body.

Your experience does contradict Evan's view. A highly-trained brain will increase the efficacy of the muscle fibers recruitment (+avoid simultaneous contraction of antagonist muscles, a classic strength limiting factor irl), but then one must have fibers to recruit (vs atrophy). My guess is you ended up slightly stronger than you would have w/o training the opposite, but lost too much mass. Also, thanks for the respectful tone of this discussion. Haven't seen of of these on youtube for ages...

who says powerlifters are smaller than bodybuilders? if you consider powerlifters in the highest weightclass and bodybuilders in the highest weightclass, champion powerlifters will almost always weigh more. of course, the powerlifter will have a higher bodyfat percentage , but they carry around inordinate amounts of muscle too. the biggest factor in hypertrophy is diet: calorie intake, protein intake, nutrition in general. rep schemes are a distant second.

I have seen so many videos with similar rock climbing training and they all forget one of the most important climbing tools. Leg strength! I used to be on a Inline speed skating team, strong legs, and believe me strong legs does help with climbing.

+Paul Chaisson, you can add 50+ lbs to a squat/dl without gaining any bodyweight. Being stronger at the same weight is always an advantage.
@Inspiration011
@Inspiration011 8 жыл бұрын
+Paul Chaisson Maybe you should stick to armchair beta, any climber who says legs aren't that important is just plain stupid. Sure campusing will get the attention of the only single chick at the gym, and you can get away with arm-heavy climbing if you're just bouldering, but the longer the climb the quicker you'll realize just how stupid it is to underutilize your legs.
