It's all one holiday to most people. Although Christmas and New Year are separate events, (and yes, they are separate holidays with totally different meanings before anyone bothers to correct me), the fact is it all falls under "Christmas Time". When it says Merry Christmas it's not referring to Christmas Day it's talking about the overall holiday season. Hope that answers your question.
