Just to add some additional context for Blackbird and the deeper meaning behind it - this song was written by Paul McCartney about the civil rights issue black women specifically were going through at that time and he wanted to inspire hope amidst adversity, hence the lyric “take these broken wings and learn to fly”. Having up and coming black female country artists on the track is another nod to the beautiful message behind the song. Have hope and persevere.

Can we stop investing cultural currency in the Grammys when they have failed to recognize talent, vision, and artistry / excluded minorities from awards / and provided nothing to the culture / world of music outside of lines on a resume/CV… She is much greater than the Grammys or any of the categories they will ever have. another note on the transition between Daughter and Spaghetti is that actually, they filmed most "spaghetti western" films in Italy, hence the nickname, because the American Western States were used as nuclear test sites and Italy (was) cheaper to film in. So to end the track Daughter with her beautiful singing in Italian and then to go into the track Spaghetti which is breaking down the genre discussion, honestly masterful.

Craziest thing on the album was Beyonce singing Caro mio ben! It's a staple in classical vocalist repertoire. Every vocal student knows it or is well familliar with it and she absolutely killed it!!!!! Her ornamentation? Her vibrato? Her interpretation of the text itself? Flawless execution! I can't believe that Beyonce and I have sang the same song as beginner students. It really shows that we start somewhere and adding it in DAUGHTER was a crazy move on her part!

ive never been a beyonce fan but brittany is the first person to be a fan in such a way that it shows she understands WHY beyonce is an icon, and a legend and WHY she deserves all the respect and love she gets. genuinely i would ask people why they like beyonce and they would just be like "shes an icon!" and that didnt do it for me. also her just talking about having a military dad + being your fathers daughter + your mom being more of a bestie than a mother really encapsulated more of my life than it needed to and fully convinced me that beyonce is worth a damn listen. people really did and have talked about beyonce like just a random "next best thing" thats just thoughtless. brittanys degree is really degree-ing and convincing me to go binge beyonces entire fuckin discography

Yeah…stan culture doesn’t really allow for an introspective dialogue surrounding someone of Beyoncé’s magnitude. She’s an incredible artist with a lot of innovation and versatility, but unless you can either join in or completely ignore the hype and actually listen to her bodies of work for yourself, she might seem too inaccessible. Like there are a lot of people on KZbin that have reacted her music for the first time and have been pleasantly surprised, but they’ll also acknowledge that the buzz (lol🐝 ) surrounding her was what made them hesitant to dive in.

I think it’s a matter of doing research/knowing where to look. It was always out there. I like to watch Two Gay Matts discuss her, Joulzey, heck even Scott from Pentatonix back in the day talked about her a lot & her brilliance at her myriad of concerts. And nowww - I watch Brittany speak on her too, lol. It’s great & they all have taught me a lot about music & music theory.

It’s probably because in order to explain why she’s an icon we need a 2 hour long dissertation & someone randomly asking is NOT gonna listen to that so we don’t bother 😅 But coming from Brittany people are more willing to learn. I didn’t get the hype until I dove into her live performances & the meaning behind her work, it’s often very very layered. The moment I realised how deep it was (even on a pop song) was the moment I became a ride or die fan.

A few song notes/rumors! MY ROSE - rumored to be dedicated to her son JOLENE - rumored to be written from her mother's perspective, hence the Louisiana lyric ALLIIGATOR TEARS - The phrase "crocodile tears" is more common. However, alligator species are mainly found within the Americas, whereas crocodile species span across several other continents. Anyone heard these too? What others are out there?

A detail I absolutely love is her cover of Blackbird & the meaning behind it. Paul McCartney was inspired by and wrote that song for the young black women (Black Birds, as “bird” is a term used to affectionately describe a young girl in the UK) who were fighting for desegregation in the states in the 60s. It makes that cover so much more moving

I’ve been waiting for you to post this since my first listen through the album on Friday. Every time I listen it hits harder. When you read out the line “I gave water to the soil and now it feeds me” I started WEEPING and then I started writing this comment. GIRL HOW ARE YOU HOLDING IT TOGETHER FOR THIS??!

The way you speak about Beyoncé is just like poetry which I really enjoy. Growing up poor listening to Destiny’s Child is such a fond memory you can feel just in your BONES! I really feel like you can understand women and girls in a way that nobody else in the media portrays.

I also feel like we should talk about the play on the name cowboy carter itself! Yes it’s her last name but I think it could also reference the carter family, the 1900s folk/country group that was popular. They got many of their influences and songs from Black communities, more specifically Lesley Riddle. A Black man who taught them several songs and even some guitar lessons. They shaped country music, but would be nothing without the work and artistry of the Black community who launched these genres of folk, bluegrass etc. So I take the Cowboy Carter as a reclamation, a reminder of the roots of country music, which is obviously a main theme regarding this album. She teaches me so much 🥲

people will be dissecting this body of work for years and it’ll be studied in universities just like self-titled, lemonade and renaissance have been. the amount of LAYERS to the lore of this album is actually insane. from the concept of smoking while listening to a faulty radio hence the trip into genre blending, to the journey from her perspective to her mom’s perspective, going from americana and folk to country to trap to r&b and bluegrass then jersey club 😭 her MIND!!! the lyrical storytelling in american requiem, most wanted, daughter, protector, 16 carriages, my rose, levi jeans etc 🫠 my heart. AND THE VOCALS??!?!!?!? HELLO??!?!!!! this woman is 34 years into her professional career and still SANGING DOWNNNN while crafting entire worlds to escape into and push culture forward while paying homage to the past 😮‍💨 and not to mention… all these acts will culminate in a feature film in a couple years 😭 lord help us all

hold on hold on i have a theory! i think beyoncé's next album will be a rock album! i'm sorry supreme leader but here's why: - act i was all about house music right? and house music was founded by black people in 80s chicago. **then** it became popularized - act ii is all about country music. and country music was started by black people. **then** it became popularized - act iii will be a rock album for this very theme she's following: taking back music genres that were founded by black people also you CANNOT deny how sick it would be to see beyoncé in a leather fit shredding the guitar PLEASE SUPREME LEADER SEE THE VISION

the thing about her using cowboy instead of cowgirl reminds me a lot of lion by (g)i-die when they said “i’m a lion i’m a queen” and some people heard that and were criticizing them for saying lion instead of lioness but it just didn’t have the same impact along with a lot of words that have the neutral term and the specifically female term just by using one or the other changes the whole meaning of it (there’s a few more examples with gidle like tomboy where the whole point is to comment on the differences) it’s all very interesting and i love when artists do such a simple wording that has so much meaning behind it

What you were saying about how you resemble your dad more in certain ways than your mom hit really hard for me, and about your mom being your best friend (though in my case my mother does a good job at being my mom and my best friend.) “There is a certain hyper masculine element to being a daughter raised by a military man.” Oof, insanely accurate. Growing up, growing up and even today, I struggle a lot with that hyper femininity that is expected from men and even other women. My dad is a great guy, so I don’t mean this next part as if he’s just some angry man… but boy, do I have my father’s anger, I have my father’s thought processes, I have all the worst traits yet best traits but without the confidence that naturally comes to him as a man. And it really makes you feel like such a complicated person as you grow up. Thanks for this part, really it was so relatable and explained perfectly.

The entire time I was listening to Cowboy Carter I was like wow Brittany is going to EAT THIS UP, This album had made me fall in love with beyonce all over again, shes always been a fixture in my life from my mom blasting destiny's child to my sister listening to b day driving us to school in the mornings, as a black woman from the south, this album feels like a hug, like a love note from a long time friend, and a celebration of being a woman and a mother, and being unabashedly in love with yourself, and your partner and your life ! , and still being a bad ass mother fucker all at the same time , I love beyonce I love beyonce !! I am not a Beyonce stan, I like her music and have great respect for her, but it never reached stan level. I also haven't enjoyed any of her music since Lemonade. This album, I can confidently say, is a MASTERPIECE. Layers upon layers of art, lyrical genius, musical innovation, attention to detail, mastery and deconstruction of genre. Incredible album.
