Benjamin Emsley Hopkins ( SGT US Army WW ll ) 1895-1970 · Minnie Bell Moreland Hopkins. 1899-1994. Spouse. They lived along and it seems like a wonderful happy life..With a loving and very caring family... Blessings to the Hopkins family. The info I gotten from the internet on the couple. I hope it's the right one. 😬

It happens, when my dad passed he lived alone. I was the only child. I found him dead and devastated. I couldnt stand being in there. Prior to funeral i ran in collected minimal personables and never returned. I left like this almost. Emotionally i couldnt handle it and had no emotional support. It happens, we can't judge. In retrospect years later i wish i had the strength to sift and im sure others found gems but at that point the only thing that mattered was i was fatherless in this world and m_poor dad died alone and decomposed in 3 days of last contact as it was winter and he had windows shut and heat high. Thank you for telling our stories. It’s very rare that our stories get told. And to everyone asking why they didn’t come back; well in the States you have to have a will and during that time not a lot of people especially African Americans either didn’t know about wills, couldn’t get a will, or passed before getting a will. And if you don’t have a will everything belongs to the state.
@jodeesmith1685

That is not the way of my state. It goes to children, if no children, then to their children, etc. There is a line of family the state uses. My dad didn't have a will, it went to his children equally. We didn't argue and everything was closed out in the year.

Saddest part, is the state takes something that was paid for, tho relatives can't claim it due ot having a will costs money, & the state turns around & sells it again.

That is simply not true and you make this statement out of ignorance. As an attorney, I can tell you for certain that just because you don’t have a will, does NOT mean that your property goes to the state. In the case of no will property goes to spouse, if no spouse, children, if no children, grandchildren, if no grandchildren, siblings, so on and so on. Don’t make people into victims that are not victims.

I cannot figure out this house so just theorizing here. It was most likely built from the late 1800's to the very early 1900's so it probably had an outhouse, no built in closets, and no electricity at the beginning. Maybe they even used an outdoor hand well pump for water hence no kitchen sink or plumbing. They had electricity at one point evidenced by the stove and fridge but were still using a gas heater in the kitchen. Did I miss a fireplace? It looked like there was a chimney in the attic but I don't remember seeing a fireplace downstairs. Maybe they never got around to adding plumbing. A walk around the house would tell. I believe it was once a wealthy person's house - wealthy enough to have a separate servant's staircase from the bedroom to the kitchen (I bet that door behind the fridge is connected to the bedroom upstairs. So the live-in servant would cook and clean. I suspect the old heavy wooden furniture belonged to the original owners. My guess is that they inherited it but on a serviceman's salary plus two little children, they couldn't afford to upgrade it. Once Mr. Hopkins passed away, things probably got financially worse. I suspect that some of her children and grandchildren lived with Minnie for a while, hence the need for so many beds. I love the white curtains with the green ivy print. Also, I think the house has been rummaged through multiple times by vandals and thieves. I don't think the family left things on the floor like that - not the way they took such care to hang photos and porcelain plates. And I think homeless people have squatted there on and off. Minnie must have been so proud that her grandson became an officer like his grandfather. It is a sad house and a sad story.

I think the husband died & the wife got elderly & sick. The children & grandchildren were probably settled elsewhere too far away or another country, would be the reason of not wanting anything, & perhaps the house ran into so much money to repair it wouldn't be worth it, & or if she ran out of money the state took it over ?? Or perhaps didn't have a will, & wasn't worth the cost to go to court & lawyers fees. I'm quite sure they were not driven out by a racist act. Thank you Lesley for this video. 💔 ❤

I'm not sure of where this abandoned house is located, but, in the United States of America, many people, particularly elderly people have many possessions, & most people who move out of their parents homes acquire homes, & possessions of their own. Ceiling tiles were installed in many older homes (Installing a suspended ceiling reduced the room height & was an effective means of limiting amount of living area which had to be heated in a home, thus, reducing heating bills - without lowered ceilings, heat energy could be lost in the top areas of the rooms, particularly in larger rooms. The porch was probably enclosed with screens to keep bugs/insects out at one time.

Thank you for the warmth you put into this story and all of your stories. To the person in the comments who said "Black" Americans did not know about Wills that is absolutely not true. Now some may not have written and notarized a Will or a Will may not have been located, however, we knew about Wills. Prince didn't have a Will. He didn't know about a Wills. If the house was left to one relative who could not afford the Inheritance Tax, property taxes and upkeep sometimes the property is abandoned. Other family members that the house wasn't left to possibly could not gain entry to retrieve momentums. Unfortunately, that does happen.

Dear Lesley, could you please write in your descriptions or put in your links the names of the background piano music? I enjoy the songs so much and would like to look them up online so that I can listen to them carefully. I learn a lot of the piano songs I know by repeatedly listening to them be played. The calendar said 1994. On google I found Minnie and her husband. Minni passed away in 1994. I'm not sure about the story of the family leaving because of a hate crime. Minni also receives a postcard from her grandson, witch would be one of her childrens Sons. At the dinner table there is a table setting for one person (Minni). I believe Minni was the last person to live in the house. She passed away (1994). For whatever reason, her children and grandchildren didn't want anything to do with her home. That's why everything is still left behind and as is. This is my synopsis from the information I researched and the evidence that was left behind.

I wonder where the family moved off to possibly another state or another city. Hopefully some of the family see this video and recognizes the house and pictures Just a cruel world that houses ppl of hate. This is awful! How did he get access to the home ? Guess traveling through looking for abandoned houses. Either way thanks for sharing this hidden capsule of precious memories of a family that was uprooted from their home all bc of the color of their skin. I find it quite possible after viewing the conditions of the structure inside and out that it may have succumbed to a natural disaster. Hurricane Erin hit Booneville Mississippi in 1995. And over the years especially, the 2000"s that area of Booneville Prentiss County has repeatedly been hit with tornadoes. She passed away in 1994; the house fell into Decay and ruin for some reason. I don't think it was from family fleeing from what was suggested here.

I guess I failed to see in this entire video what would prompt anyone into thinking that the family had to flee. It simply appears as 100's of the other past explorations have. The last occupant (Minnie) was elderly and most probably ended up either dying on the property or had to go to a nursing facility, leaving the property abandoned. And, sadly as it may appear to many, the surviving relatives, for whatever reason(s), are unable or not interested in what remains of the property. More properly, it should have been titled 'Abandoned home in Maryland ' since 1994. 😊
