@ajstyles57043 жыл бұрын
He lost to Magic statistically by 10 games, but Larry played less 3 years than Magic. And yet, those 10 games reduced his stats to second best in that era. For someone like Bird to challenge Magic, by today standards, like Luka challenging Lebron, except Luka is not even close to Bird, and Magic would eat Lebron all night long with his stamina and determination. Back then we had legends, now we have primadonna.
@caseygleason5764 жыл бұрын
He might not be #1 of all time, but he might be...it just depends on what you're looking for, stats or intangibles or both. His career stat line is solid, but when you consider that he played the forward position, at 6'9", alongside Kevin McHale and Robert Parish as the other two big men who also averaged near or well over 20 points per game, Larry's points per game average would have been much, much higher on any other team that had less talent. This is a man who could have averaged 40 or more if he wanted to, if he was a selfish player. He was a great defender, a monster rebounder on both ends, had eyes in the back of his head and was Magic's equal in passing skills. Not only was he the best, he made everyone around him better...except for those poor suckers on the other team. I wasn't a Celtic fan...I hated watching my Sonics have to play him, but that Celtics/Lakers rivalry was the most amazing thing I've ever seen. The game was far more entertaining and brutal back then too. If I'm a GM and can draft any man from any era, I would draft Larry Bird #1 overall, before Jordan, before Lebron, before Shaq, before Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe, Kareem...I'd build my team around the Hick from French Lick.

Larry Bird is a legend. Of course he was tremendously skilled at basketball-specific operations. Shooting, passing, dribbling, etc. But, what set him apart and placed him in the rarefied air of greatest players ever (I personally slot him tied for second best ever with Magic Johnson, just behind Michael Jordan) was his self motivation and toughness. Bird was an assassin - cold blooded. There has NEVER been a tougher, harder player than Larry Legend.

He went to IU I became a fan, then left and Indiana fans were pissed, me too. Then while he quit basketball he was working on the towns trash truck, content but the coach from Indiana State called so much Larry agreed to a meeting if he promised to not bug them anymore. He enrolled and I became a Sycamore fan. "BIRD IS THE WORD" became a hit song in Indiana but Majic won the game, NCAA Championship. The reason you haven't heard much of him is that Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were in their twilight years and yielding the game to the Michael Jordan and the younger crop. I always put Bird as number because people don't realize that Bird *saved* the NBA. Playoffs attendance was low and they were *tape delayed* because stations got better ratings with their normal shows scheduled. Also it was the *Eastern Conference* that had the most talented players at that time. His autobiography is named *Drive* and is also Mr. Hustle. Had he remained healthy he wouldn't have had to leave the NBA after 13 seasons. In the game shown where he gets hurt? He bounced his head off the floor and was unconscious for a minute. He cracked his orbital bone. Re-injured his back as well. He wouldn't go to the hospita. Chuck "Rifleman" Person had trash talked him saying "I'm going Bird hunting tonight". But that was *Indiana* Pacers. Bird's injuries included two herniated discs in his back, a broken ankle and two blown Achilles tendons that needed surgery. G.O.A.T. they forget his amazing passing specialities. Bird is the G.

What an amasing era for basketball, so much amazing talent on the courts then, and they could play the game like men with gusto and not stifled by suffocatingly petty rules. These legends didnt just play basket ball they went to war and fought like tigers for the win. Even Larry said magic johnson was the best he had ever seen, saw that in an interview clip once, wow. If you want to see the gretest group of players ever assembled look up the 92 basketball olympics and the DREAM TEAM, best players of the day including larryt and magic along with many other greats, they played the best europe had to offer and won and they brought home the gold.
@BoxPro-4 жыл бұрын
Did they just say they have never heard Larry Bird's name before?!?!
@jacksmith44603 жыл бұрын
yeh surprisingly most of the world has not, because Basket ball is only big in the US and a few other countries, so in the UK we started to have NBA on TV in the 90's basically a year or so after Bird retired, so in the UK MJ is where a lot of Basketball started for us. Of course fans here know who Bird is, but everyone knew who MJ was. I promise you hardly anyone knows of Bird compared to Jordan outside the US. MJ was the player that started to bring the rest of the world into it (not just the UK) You also have to remember Football (soccer) is by far the biggest sport here, so many Basket Ball fans here , it's their 2nd sport, so we are just not as immersed in it, although that has changed a little in the last decade, it's growing. For the Record I knew who Bird was for ages, but then I got into it in the 90's and heard the name, but again my first love is Football. So if you want me to list 20 names the world knows in football and ask why you dont know them (they would be of a similar impact on the game) you would understand why you dont know them, and so would I. But 2 billion+ people know their names,
@jacksmith44603 жыл бұрын
In fact I'm gonna, honestly I would be impressed if you knew 3 of these: Garrincha, Eusebio, Van Basten, Zenga, Hagi, Baggio, Romario, Matthaus, George Best, Lucio, Riquelme, Viera, Henry, Papin, Bobby Charlton, Buffon, Cafu, Petite, Nesta, Raul, Batistuta. Any one of these would be worthy of an all time team, some would require a reasoning (some more than others) but each one of these guys is considered top top top draw and a master of their position and style of play. The ones you have heard of Pele, Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi, are probably the best, but its an argument still, and I have not mentioned the likes of Ronaldinho and Ronaldo (not cristiano, before him) Zidane and others who you may possibly have heard of these guys are MJ, Kobe, Curry , Lebron. (not saying those 4 are the GOATS of B-Ball just they are the recent dominant players, and FTR I think MJ was the goat, but Bird top 5 no doubt, but I also admit I have not seen enough Bird to judge, because i saw him after the fact) The 20 names I listed are more like Magic, Bird, Chamberlin, Russell, Karim, etc I hope that gives you the perspective outside the US a little more

the 2 seasons before the twin achilles surgeries were the first back-to-back 50/40/90 seasons ever. [87 and 88] one of those seasons was his highest PPG season...so evidence points to him GETTING BETTER AFTER WINNING 3 STRAIGHT MVPs...but injuries got him because he only played all-out in a rough era. and he had heavy minutes because Boston's bench nearly always sucked, plus they were always making deep runs in the playoffs except 83. He made difficult look easy and was only interested in winning, giving up a shot at a quadruple double in a blowout saying, 'Nah, I already did enough damage'. As insane as this vid looks, he wasn't all that flashy and wasn't interested in any off-the-court attention...except a commercial or two...he liked money. So his shunning of the media spotlight and selflessness on the court means people that didn't watch ball in the 80's couldn't possibly understand what he was--even this collection of flashy plays doesn't represent his game, because he was a lunchpail guy and in fact had two 8 point games in the 81 Finals...but they won...that's all he cared about, not looking cool

Bird had his first 50/40/90 season that year, scoring 28ppg to McHale's 26ppg and also putting up 9.6 rebs and 7.6 assists, a season in which he had numerous triple-doubles and near-triple-doubles. To my people in Europe. Bird is a top 5 players. He should be rightfully ranked above Lebron and Kobe. 5 or 6 interchangeably with Magic. Bird was the most skillful of them all. He had to be but more importantly he loved the game and played it when it was a league of men and today unfortunately we are watching little boys play. People so not understand especially the younger generation because yes your parents either didn’t watch basketball or did not teach you right by the game’s history. It was much harder to score then. The rules made it much tougher. You couldn’t do half the moves today back then in fear of palming or carrying the ball which is what players do today. No matter which skills trainer tries to sell it. They made the league easier to score and less physical so yeah Larry played in a man’s league.

To comment on what you guys were talking about when you asked if he could come back onto the court after being hurt: Basketball isn't like football (soccer). A given basketball team will have "shifts" where certain players are rested if they need a breather or taken out of the game if they are "in foul trouble." In NBA basketball, you will "foul out" (i.e., have to sit the rest of the game on the bench) if you accumulate 6 fouls. So, if your best player is "in foul trouble," (say, he's got 4 fouls and the game is still in the 3rd quarter), it's smart to bench them until they're absolutely needed. So, yes, it's allowed. It's actually necessary, with how the rules of the game affect the pace of the game and eligibility of a player. Cheers, lads. I'm enjoying the content you two put out.

Being born in New York in 1970 I feel privileged to have lived and watched the greatest era of the NBA. Today's NBA is soft because of the loop holes in the rules that were exploited or a individual player that had rules created because of him. The Wilt Chamberlain rule aka man to man defence is one. Shaq would have cried if he had 2-3 guys defending him all night life Wilt had back in the day. The Trent Tucker rule aka catch and shoot with a certain amount of time on the clock.

Comparing Bird and Lebron is tough. One took advantage of fundamentals while the other was great because of athleticism. One was a part of the greatest front court in nba history while the other toiled alone talent wise for many years. But here is something Bird and Lebron fans will both agree on. Wherever you put Lebron James in your top 10 of all time nba players, if he had spent his career on the same team as larry bird, you would have to move him up five places because of all the passes bird would have made to him in just the right place and at just the right time.

@@aznk7538 debatable. Depends on where people rank Duncan, kobe, and bron. I have bird at 7 but I understand him being ranked as high as 4th. I cant logically see him higher than my undisputed top 3 or mj, kareem, or magic

@@TheIcemanthomas Bird won 3 straight MVP's with Magic, Kareem, Jordan in the league. Larry's rookie year he finished 4th in the MVP count. The next 3 years 2nd. The next 3 years after that 1st. Then 2nd then 3rd. After that he was pretty much injured for the rest of his career. This was in the 80's with several players that are considered the greatest ever. Bird beat Magic 8 times in 9 years in the MVP count.

Larry Legend,, he was 6 ft. 9 in tall.. in high school he was a 6 foot 3 inch tall guard,, grew six inches after high school.. he was the first big man that could shoot 3 pointers.. and now you see it all the time..he hurt his back which is what ended his career.

apart from the game being much more physical back then their home court was an old old building. it had no air conditioning. so all the post season home games in the summer had to be played in unbearable indoor temperatures and high humidity. I was only in there in the summer for some pro wrestling shows and it was awful for the fans. I could not imagine running up and down that court for 48mins in that heat.

@trha2222 It takes no skill to dunk. At their height and massive arm span, all they have to do it jump 8 inches. Dunking is not even a stat. Hell Spud web at 5'7" could dunk. A short little man with a huge vertical leap. He had to, being so short. I would say that is pretty amazing. Anyways who actually cares about dunking. Hit a 20 footer or a fade away while being guarded by 2 defenders. Take an elbow to the eye and break your eye socket, then see double for a few days and then... go ahead and score like nothing happened... that is skill and toughness. Lebron would have been laid up in the hospital for the rest of the season. He is a quitter and a choke artist. They don't call him Le-flop for nothing.

You gotta react to magic Johnson....the greatest 6”9 point guard in nba history. The biggest and greatest rivalry i of the nba in the 80’s was magic Johnson vs Larry bird
@plefevre4 жыл бұрын
Nice reaction guys, glad you saw the greatness of Larry Bird. Of course, Michael Jordan is the greatest ever but Larry Bird is right there along with Kobe and LeBron. In fact I can't put LeBron ahead of Bird, as great a player as LeBron is. They played the same position but in very different eras. Bird played in the 80's and 90's when it was rough, hard fouls were allowed and games were lower scoring accordingly. Stat-wise they are very similar with LeBron averaging a few more points and assists but Bird averaging more rebounds. I think Bird was a better passer than LeBron despite LeBron having more assists per game. But here's where Bird really separates himself from LeBron - Firstly, Bird was TOUGH, real tough in an era where tough guys were the norm. You saw how he played after fracturing his cheekbone and won the game for the Celtics after returning to the game in the 2nd half. The other factor was that Bird was a cold-blooded killer, especially in the last seconds of a game. He made so many game winning shots on, or near the buzzer and as you saw in the highlight reel, he also made game winning steals when everyone thought the game was over. With a few seconds on the clock, Bird would tell his opponent and the entire opposing team where he was going to get the ball and that he was going to shoot right in their face and then go and do it, exactly as he said. If there was time on the clock and Bird was on the court, you were in trouble. The whole world knew it but all you could do was hope he missed. And he seldom did.

There is no limitation on the number of substitutions in basketball, and you can be taken out and put back in an unlimited number of times as well.
