Some facts about the movie and history overall: - Brother Bear takes place in Alaska. - Woolly Mammoths disappeared around 4,000 years ago. - Brother Bear is set around 10,000 years ago at the very end of our last ice age. - In the original story, it was intended to be a father-son centered movie, in which the son, Kenai, turned into a bear. - Koda (at the time he was named Griz) was supposed to be an old blind bear with three daughters who encountered Kenai soon after he transformed, making him understand his biological father’s point of view by comparing his own relationship with Koda, similar to the story we know today, but with a different relationship type. - The aspect ratio of the movie is different between when Kenai is a human and a bear. It signifies a difference in perspective in the character while providing the audience with a difference in feeling without any overt changes.

Brother Bear deserves more love, honestly. It has the sort of grand, epic story similar to The Lion King and Tarzan in a few ways but on its own, this Disney film is really something special for what the story is and what it brings to the audience with its message. I didn't grow up on a reservation, but as an American Native I have a lot of friends on a Lakota reservation a few states away that I visit every summer to ride horses and go to powwows and stuff like that. My friends gave me the name Mahto Chinchalawin, in Lakota it means "Little she-bear". I eat a lot, sleep a lot, have brown skin, eyes, and hair, and one of my favorite animals is a Bear, besides the horse. I'm very touchy and give all the bear hugs lol Years later and the name stuck. As a baby, this movie and Spirit have always had a place in my heart. "fun fact, in the movie spirit, The native American named Little creek is from the Lakota tribe, the same tribe as me"

It’s not Kenai’s fault nor is it the bears they were both simply doing what they thought best. The bear was protecting the young and Kenai was angry just like any human would be in the situation. Not to mention had the middle brother (can’t remember his name) had he not been so antagonistic towards Kenai Kenai likely wouldn’t have gone after the bear to prove himself in the first place. Not that the middle brother is to blame either but the series of events that unfolded could have been avoid by little things. Snowball rolling down hill and all that

This movie is a masterpiece! It's impossible not to cry watching it, so incredible. @@Rubyvipr Sure! It has the figure of the Shaman and I loved it when I learned that the first Shamans in history were women. The Shamans within the tribes were the only people able to communicate with the Spirits and use that energy to heal. They received the messages of the Spirits and guided life in the tribe with this. Another thing I learned in Shamanism was the question of our power animals. All people have an animal energy that guides us through life. I thought the idea of the totem was very well placed in the film, representing the strength of the animal that chose us. I can't ignore the representation of the bear in Shamanism, one of the symbols of it, the bear means strengh, protection and represents one of the Four Elements - the earth. And the Shamanism also teaches us that everything that exists is connected in a way that we do not understand most of the time. People, animals, plants, everything on the planet - and out - is important and has its reasons for existing. We're all one. I'm learning so much with Shamanism, it's incredible beautiful.

As someone from Alaska this movie holds a special place in my heart. Most of the characters share names with real places in AK like Nanana(a river), Kenai(peninsula), Denahi/Denali (also known as Mt. Mckinley) and Sitka( an island near the state capital). Koda is an exception, although one can argue it is very similar to Kodiak, where the Kodiak bear (a type of Grizzly Bear) are from. Then obviously the story and soundtrack are phenomenal, so I will always praise this movie

Brother Bear is SO underrated! It’s so sweet and the music is killer 🐻 If you ever want to learn more about bear gatherings like this, Katmai National Reserve in Alaska is home to one of the biggest salmon run gatherings of brown bears in North America and they have a wonderful team of researchers who study the bears and have live cams set up along the Brooks River. It is so incredibly cool to see normally solitary animals come together in (relative) peace to fish and fatten up before hibernation season.

Please read up on the Younger Dryas event (12.9k years ago). That event killed 95% of both humans and the megafauna. Also, 1.5k years before the Younger Dyas The Campi Fliegre supervolcano blew, causing an ice age prior to the one created by the Younger Dryas. Due to both events, there not only was ice, and a lot of it, but also bolide explosions that caused massive wildfires across several continents. There was also massive melt off deluges that caused such land features as the Dakota Badlands, Washington Scablands, the Grand Canyon and Rio Grande valley. Also know that 200 Wooly Mammoth skeletons were found in Mexico due to one of these melt off deluges. And don't forget, they still find Mammoths with greens in their stomachs, frozen in ice in Siberia. To smugly say that men killed all of the megafauna is a very uninformed thing to say.

I personally love this movie because I find it such a comforting way to deal with death and moving on, the fact Sitka is always there in spirit form or as an Eagle and then when Koda gets to say bye to his mum it really comforts me and helped me especially when I lost my grandma as a child. First of all, it was actually Mark Mancina, who composed the score for this film. He also collaborated with Phil Collins for Tarzan, then with Lin Manuel Miranda for Moana. Still, the score for Brother Bear can have a Hans Zimmer vibe at times. Anyway, fun fact, 2003’s Brother Bear was the third, and final film to be made primarily at the former animation studio in Orlando, Florida (1998’s Mulan, and 2002’s Lilo & Stitch were also made primarily at that studio). Anyway, I did like how in this film, it was one of the rare to few times where we had a brother like relationship, instead of a romantic one for once. Yes, I’ll admit that I’m a sucker for romantic love stories. Still, I was fine with Disney taking a break from that sort of deal with films like this, Treasure Planet, Emperor’s New Groove, and films like those. I will say, though, that I felt like the non-romantic storyline seemed to work best for films like Treasure Planet, and Brother Bear. Anyway, while I enjoyed this film, I will also admit that I felt like the story may have felt a little too fast paced to the point where side characters like the moose, or Tug don’t seem to be as memorable, and, therefore, don’t seem to leave as big of an impact as say the dwarves from Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs, the side characters in Atlantis: The Lost Empire, or films like those, you know? I will also say that the middle could have been as strong as the beginning, and end of this film. Yes, we had some funny moments, and the middle was fairly engaging. Still, it probably could have been a little better. Overall, I will still say that I liked how we had a somewhat more of a mature story from Disney that didn’t seem to be as present since films like Pocahontas, or The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, or films like those, you know? Well, thanks for reviewing this film. I’m glad you enjoyed it. By the way, I do have a few suggestions for you on this channel: The Iron Giant (1999), Quest For Camelot (1998), The Road To El Dorado (2000), Dinosaur (2000), and Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001). Anyway, I hope you’ll at least take those films into consideration for this channel. Thanks! By the way, I know Quest For Camelot has a low rating just like Brother Bear. Still, I am all the more curious, if you get to it, to see if you end up liking it like you did Brother Bear. Anyway, just thought I’d say that real quick. Well, thanks!

Speaking of which, is it strange for me to say that Sitka dying within the first 5-10 minutes, or slightly more, made me think of how Kayley’s father, Sir Lionel, died within such a short time frame in Quest For Camelot as well? Also, if there was a crossover between say the characters of Quest For Camelot, and Brother Bear, am I the only one who thinks that Koda, and Bladebeak might become good friends, along with maybe the two-headed dragon, and the moose? Also, side note, I find it interesting that both Quest For Camelot, and Brother Bear have such low scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

@@matthewcline2728 That’s not strange at all! I think they would be great friends too, just everyone else has to watch out for their chaos! It really is sad that they didn’t get a higher score, they’re such great movies!

@@ordinary-not2525 For sure! Granted, Brother Bear at least made more money at the US, and Canada box-office with $85 million (and of course additional money in the worldwide box office), while Quest For Camelot only made $22 million domestically (and of course additional money worldwide as well), but still. All to say that films like Quest For Camelot, Brother Bear, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Road To El Dorado, and other animated films that were released around this time period, and didn’t perform as well as they should have definitely deserve more recognition, that’s for sure. Oh, and another side note, I have sometimes imagined animated characters watching a popular animated film, or one that performed better than a movie that they were in (I.e. the characters of Hunchback Of Notre Dame, or Hercules watching Mulan, or Tarzan, as the latter two films performed better than the former two, or the characters of Quest For Camelot possibly watching Brother Bear in an animated world where animated characters from different films were to possibly coincide with each other). Anyway, thanks! I’m glad you liked that idea of mine.

Man I used to watch this movie obsessively when I was a kid. Re-watched for the first time in maybe 16 years yesterday, cried multiple times, and can't quite understand why it gets hardly any love. Was nice to watch another grown man cry over this. I wish the same amount of effort had gone into the sequel, and that Jaoquin Pheonix had stuck around for it. The sequel is still nice, but nowhere near the masterpiece this was. I think it's a timeless movie. Also, weird little side note: I remember thinking as a kid that the story wasn't original (albeit very well executed), yet in my adult form, can't think of much else that did the whole "man gets turned into the thing he hates, only to learn the hardships of that thing and come to see things their way" story. Anybody else remember feeling that way? Or have anything they can reference as similar transformation stories?

Had one of the animators who worked on this as my animation professor in college. He was the animator for Koda. Also voiced the crazy Ukrainian bear. What an honor to have someone who worked on so many classic films as an instructor. Edit. Mammoths are recent. They were around when the great pyramids were made.

What other movie did someone get turned into a Baer?: A: Brave! That's the only other one I know, hehe. I do wonder if the elder/shaman and the witch from Brave might be related, or possibly know each other. Since both are involved in people turning into bears. I loved your reaction! It always gets me when it comes to the point where we find out about Koda's mother.

The moose are voiced by the directors, on the DVD they did a whole commentary track in character, it’s very amusing.
@dnwhyte
@dnwhyte 2 жыл бұрын
While I have no doubt the commentary was voiced by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas (the actors who played the moose), I think you'll find that they did not direct the film. The moose characters were a reprisal of characters they originated in an old sketch comedy show called SCTV. The characters were named Bob and Doug McKenzie and were in a recurring segment called Great White North that lovingly exaggerated Canadian stereotypes. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqGzg5R6a7l-gsU

@@dnwhyte I stand corrected, I have no idea why I thought they were the directors. Still the commentary is good fun. Edit: I have figured out my confusion, I only ever saw the commentary when I was a kid, my dad told me they must be the directors and apparently I never questioned it. Oh well, I know now :)

Brother Bear is a classic movie to me because there's a lesson to be learned here. Kenai does something horrible and is turned into a bear by his brother Sitka. But when Kenai meets a young cub named Koda.. he suddenly comes face to face with what he did. And he soon comes to realize that his actions were responsible for the death of Koda's mother. Now Kenai must find a way to make up for what he's done but finds that's a little more complicated than he might realize.

The composer is Mark Mancina, who also did Disney's Tarzan and Moana, he's not the most talented by I think his soundtracks are really beautiful and he deserves recognition next to Alan Menken :)

All songs were written by Phil Collins. He along with Mark Mancina composed the score. They also worked together on Tarzan, where Collins wrote and performed the songs with Mancina composing the score. Hans Zimmer did compose the score for Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, but all songs were written and performed by Bryan Adams.
