1.)Switch the printer off at the wall. 2.)Hold the power button on the user panel for 5-7 secs then release the power button. 3.) Press and hold the power button and then switch it on at the wall while holding the user panel power button on. 4.) If the screen or home button light up or flash your power supply unit is OK and this repair applies to you. If your machine does nothing (stays dead black no signs of life) CHANGING THIS CAPACITOR WILL NOT FIX YOUR PRINTER. You have a faulty Power supply unit. I will cover repairing that board at a later date in another video.

Good job man!. I will likely order the cap and do the repair of simple work arounds fail. Could a person crush the cap with a vise grips leaving the pins in place? Could a person solder a socket to avoid resoldering in the future.. Or maybe solder wires to pins that connect the cap somewhere easily accessible.. Maybe even outside the printer case? I don't want to do this twice. You actually never cut the case back on yours, right?

Hi Terry. I got a j6720dw that wont start. Holding the button or using the trays does not do it. But i can hear a small electric click inside the printer, and a small faded speaker sound, when i plug it in. The screen stays black though. Also i can measure power on alot of connections. When plugged, the capacitor is measuring 9v, when unplugged 2,5v. Is this a dead game?

I have a 6920 with this problem, and have tried turning off power and holding button to reset to no avail, but have found that by turning off power, then open cartrige door before turning power back on, the printer senses door open and tells you to close door instead of going to shut down sequence. Close the door and your ready to print. I realise this doesnt fix the problem but its an easy fix and so much cheaper than throwing the bloody thing through the window, Hope this works for you too.

hello, I have a DCP j4110dw, the problem is that when I connect it the home button stays on, the house button stays on (white) and the screen LCD lights is on too but in very clear gray colour, almost white. No activity is heard from the machine neither head nor starting or anything at all, and it does not respond to the on or off button, I have to disconnect it from the network and I have tried to disconnect and connect waiting and with the power button pressed and it does nothing, it can guide me in something?. grateful in advance for your reply, kind regards. I have another printer just like it works perfect, I changed the power supply, the PCB, the print heads, the touch screem and buttons module and it still doesn't work, I've done the hard reset to turn off and on by pressing and holding down the on/off key without releasing it and it doesn't restart either. My Brother J4620DW just seemingly died a few days ago after 4 years of really light use, i ran out of paper during a print, reloaded with paper I replaced the paper tray back in the printer & pressed OK as instructed then it went bust, just like that unbelieveable, tried the various suggestions of unplugging, removing the paper tray & ink cartridge door open, holding for 60+ secs then plug power cord back in all to no avail, I was thinking it obviously must be the power supply, I heard of this super capacitor (5.5v .22f) fix but thought it will only work if the printer does in fact have power & can be powered up but then it states that it's shutting down, do you think this will fix my problem most certainly? Thank you for this video and selling the capacitor! I got the new capacitor soldered in and the printer stayed on for a whole day! I thought it fixed it, but now it's back to the same problem where it won't turn on. I checked the solders and they are still secure. Any ideas for me?

Have you checked the capacitor with a meter to make sure it is charging up above 3volts. Have you made sure you have put the capacitor in the right way around. What model of printer are you working on?

No your printer was built before engineered failure was built in at the factory. If the reset procedure below doesn't make your 6510 work (which it wont likely) your main board will be dead. Your 6510 is 15 years old you have had a good run.

Hi Terry. My wife has a J6920DW, recently she purchased a full set of NEW Genuine Brother Inks, with in days ALL the Colour inks started printing incorrectly. Then no colours were printing at all. Rather than spending another $100 for more inks, I purchased some generic inks from EBay and started doing head cleans and block colour prints. Colours are starting to work again..... Is this a common problem with Brother and their inks blocking up the heads ?

There are fake genuine black cartridges doing the rounds. The routine is a new cartridges put in the printer 3 days later the black disappears

Never ever had to replace one. Unlike HP and Canon Brother heads never fail they simply clog. You need to clean the body of the printer and install good black ink and that doesn't mean installing genuine.

Is 2 micron or smaller good enough, or do you use another criteria? Thanks for a great video, so few online show an MFC disassemble.

@@sgtbilkothe3rd There is an issue with the genuine brother lc139 black cartridges at the moment in Australia I don't know about the rest of the world the moment you install the brand new genuine cartridge the black ceases to flow and the head clogs up. Typically you never have to replace a brother print head you simply have to unclog it with some good quality ink. We have good inks available they are $44 each. I have seen 4 machines in the past week where the genuine ink has been the problem with clogging up the black printhead, put in mine and it works straight away.

When he removed the old capacitor, he left both metals from the side so he could use them to fix the new one easier, but the problem is the solder is not holding them together. Do we have to remove the metal from the old one and fix the new one straight to the circuit board? I've already given up and probably will buy a new printer, but I just would like to ask you if there is anything that we could do. Thank you

@@davidtreibs THEN IT IS DEAD. It is still a current model printer, phone brother head office for your area explain the printer is dead and you want it repaired under warranty. Most countries consumer laws use the word "durable". Quoting Australian consumer law -Any consumer device sold for profit must be durable, fit for purpose and warrantied against any defects for a minimum of 12 months-. The word durable can be applied to extend it out to 18months or 24 if your good with arguments on the phone. Failing that go buy another unit of the same model from a large retailer, walk it to the carpark, then walk it back to the service desk and request a refund as you changed your mind. Then take that receipt of purchase and use that to get your printer repaired under warranty.

Your machine has more than likely been half way through a firmware update when the power cord has been pulled out. Connect a usb cable from the printer directly to your pc turn the printer on to its green light and blacked out screen, download the firmware update tool from the brother website and try running the update. If your lucky it will work.
