Thank you tremendously for taking the time out to make such a video--it is timely in the season I am in :)! I do have a question for you (or anyone else for that matter). I'd hope that the following may be understood: I'd like to make the type of stencils that people can use writing materials [such as pencils, color pencils], in contrast to spray painting over the stencils. It didn't appear that the first one you made may be firm enough for one to use pencils and other writing material. However, the matte mylar one did. What would you suggest? Thank you in advance for your time!
@alandacraft
@alandacraft 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately Amanda, I am not sure what the best Mylar is to use with writing materials, but you will probably need a thicker Mylar than we use for cutting out our stencils. There are a number of companies that you can contact online that may be able to help you and answer your questions.

I've been looking at the BROTHER SCAN & CUT, would the machine cut the designs that I've made on my PC?
@alandacraft

I can't really answer that without knowing what the designs are. However, you can test out whether your images will work, without buying the machine first, by downloading the free Canvas Workspace software and loading your images into that. Here is the link canvasworkspace.brother.com/en. I hope that helps.

Hi, in my country the mylar comes in 125 microns (1.25mm) 190 microns (1.90 mm) up to 250 microns, they recommend for plotters of this kind 1.25mm, but i find it a bit thin, is it possible to cut thicker sheets obtaining good results?
@alandacraft
@alandacraft 2 жыл бұрын
We have only cut the following 4mils (100 Microns) and a 5mils (127 microns). So its difficult to give a definitive answer as we haven't used thicker quality. I found this video where she uses 10mil mylar so you might like to take a look at that one and see if it helps kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZ_GqH-XhNmImrM

@alandacraft
@alandacraft 4 жыл бұрын
It depends what you mean by .25mm. Mylar is generally measured in mils not millimeters. So if your mylar is .25 mils then i may be a bit thick for this machine. We use 4 or 5 mils to cut our stencils. This link may help you www.grafixplastics.com/grafix-plastics/plastic-film-plastic-sheet-faq/mat_thick/

OMG!!!! This is sooo fantastic... I have a question: After all this time... do you still love your "Brother" Scan-Cut Machine? You have no idea what this video has done for me!!! I am going to be doing the Book Binding for my "Billy the Kid: Little Black Book of Secrets"... at least the first 50 copies... in leather and gold leaf... but I want to use a stencil to raise the letters... I couldn't find someone to design and cut the stencil the way I needed it... Is Brother Machine the best? ... Thank YOU so much for sharing this video... God Bless YOU... ;)
@alandacraft
@alandacraft 7 жыл бұрын
We definitely still love it and it does a great job of creating stencils. We went halves in the first one we bought and between the two of us have used it constantly and it is still going strong. We ended up purchasing the updated model as well since we wanted the newer features but also because we teach people how to use it on our Alanda Craft Training Academy (premium.alandacraft.com/). However, the older version cuts just as well as the newer version so if you don't care about the new features and can get the older version at a good price don't be afraid to snap it up.

Thank you soooo much for the info... So, you can design my computer and send it to the Brother Machine? Right? That is the big thing... because the letters (font) I want for "Billy the Kid" needs to be 3D, ... using the stencil... with embossing paste, then either foil or embossing powder... (I'm more excited doing the Book cover and binding, than I am publishing the book!!!! LOL ;)

What I would suggest is to sign up first to the online ScanNCut Canvas software -scanncutcanvas.brother.com/en (It's free and you don't need a ScanNCut machine to use it.) The reason I say this is if you are wanting to convert your design to the format that the ScanNCut reads, then you need to use the Canvas software to do this. So create your design in whatever software you use. Save it as a .jpg, .png, .bmp, .svg, .dxf or .gif and then import it into Canvas. If it works and you are able to convert the file into an .fcm file (which is what the ScanNCut reads) then you should be okay to cut it. But you are better off starting with Canvas before you buy an expensive machine to see if your design will actually convert okay first.

Alanda, Thanks for the video. I am new to Scan and Cut but have used a Silhouette Portrait for several years. Anyway, I know how to do it on the Portrait but don't know how to do it in Scan and Cut Canvas. I'm talking about adding bridges to the stencil so the centers don't fall out specifically on letters. Any ideas how to do that. Thanks.

+Alanda Craft Thank you! I've been working in Canvas today and find if I use the fonts in the software it works. However, if I use the fonts in the S & C (which are different from Canvas) it doesn't work. Also, when in Canvas, if I make the bridges (I did figure it out but please do a video since it has taken me hours to figure it out) with the fonts using the software fonts I can't weld the letters.
@alandacraft

+Lynda Heines That's great that you figured it out but yes I will still do the video as others might have the same problem. Also I am able to weld the letters so I will add that to the video as well, but I am still playing at the moment and haven't tested anything in the machine itself yet but I am hoping it will all work out.
@LyndaHeines

how thick will this machine do? can it print lettering on the plastic? i trying to figure out how to make technical drawing templates
@alandacraft
@alandacraft 2 жыл бұрын
The machine will cut up to 3mm in thickness. I personally haven't tried drawing on plastic but I don't see why it wouldn't work. The machine will just draw on whatever is under it as long as it fits through the mat. The pens that are for the machine may be too thick for a technical drawing but you can buy what is called a Universal Pen Holder that will take other pens BUT they have to fit into the pen holder for them to work. Is it just text you are wanting to draw or some sort of lined drawing? If it is just lettering then you can use pretty much any font and draw with it. However, if it is a lined drawing like engineers create then this might be a different issue as you need to convert the drawing to a cutting/drawing file first in order for it to draw. The software for converting images is free and you can play around with it yourself to see whether it would work. Here's the link: canvasworkspace.brother.com/
