This was brilliant. You need to work for Brother. No one there was able to give me any guidance. I just got my SDX 125e after owning a CM350 for 4 years. The SDX, when attempting to cut very small, intricate designs, has been chewing up or ejecting pieces of my design from various thickness of cardstock, even as thin as 80lb. These were the same designs I cut successfully on the CM350. I assumed it was something in the settings so called Brother for advice on altering them. I was told I needed to call my local Sew n Vac (not sure why as I bought my machine from Amazon). They told me that if I didn’t buy it from them they weren’t responsible but they didn’t think the SDX125 would cut cardstock. (I’m not kidding!). I haven’t tried altering the defaults yet but I’m confident I can now feel better about spending all this money on a machine that so far hasn’t performed as well as my old one. You are such a gift! Many thanks.

Vicki, you have to keep in mind that letters are going to look funny with a stencil. I usually don't ever use stencils for this purpose. You are much better off using vinyl and transfer tape. Then, you take off the part you want to use for a stencil. I have lots of tutorials on cutting vinyl. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZqypWxtlJKtps0

Norine, thanks for your comment. Because the Autoblade is used, it determined the depth and thinks it needs to do another cut. I am not sure if I can outsmart it any other way. I wish I had a manual blade for this machine.

I use a completely different cutter normally, a Silver Bullet Platinum - but I have cut quite a lot of stencils. (I happened to get a second hand Scan Cut the other day, just to play with but that's another story. You may or may not know that there is an alternative to traditional stencil material which is a lot cheaper and that is binder covers. They come in different weights but I bought 100 of 240 microns (thicker) A4 binder covers for around 10 euros....Cuts well too.
@PaperedChef
@PaperedChef 4 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, I’m familiar with the Silver Bullet and used one in the past. Heavy duty. Oh I have used about 20 different materials for stencils. I bought this in bulk and it’s the gift that keeps on giving because I still have so much Mylar. Some of my viewers use cutting mats from the Dollar Tree. Anything goes while making a stencil. My materials are pretty cheap. I make 4 stencils for less than a dollar.
@createinspain
@createinspain 4 жыл бұрын
@@PaperedChef Great! The Platinum is a large double head version, so the Scan cut feels like a baby one! I too have used all sorts for making stencils, depending on what I wanted to use them for. I'm still wondering if to stencil a colour shifting design on the Scan Cut :)

How thick is your mylar? What is the best thickness you can suggest? Thank you for this!!!
@IraQNid
@IraQNid 3 жыл бұрын
You can use your finger as a stylus. It isn't like a multi-touch touch screen display but you can use your finger to drag and drop objects and to swipe up and down the selections instead of using the arrow keys. Run the mylar through a Xyron cold press lamination machine to adhere printed paper to it with different types of adhesive cartridges. Then you can make sturdier confetti. The current trend on Etsy is custom-printed confetti. With the lamination+adhesive cartridge you can create laminated custom printed, custom cut confetti. Maybe add some holographic film and you're cooking with gas :) Lots of cool ways to make custom, cool looking confetti and other projects.

Are there different thicknesses of mylar sheets and what other materials could be used for making stencils that will hold up over time with repeated use? HI Kelley, Oh YES, there are so many thicknesses of Mylar. Things like Portfolio Covers are too thick, but I tried them too. I recommend Mylar because it is easy to wash. If you have the CM model like this, you need a deep cut blade. If not, just use the Autoblade with the SDX. Thanks for the great tutorial and information! I am new to your channel and really appreciate all your expertise. I noticed that your Amazon link to the stencil material is for 7 mil thickness . Is this the thickest mylar / stencil material the SNC SDX125E can cut?
@PaperedChef

Thanks for the sub! Julie, that is the thickest I have tried. I think if you go any higher up while you are sponge coloring, you are not going to be able to get very close to the edges. If you want if for something else, try the thicker one. Give it a try. There are specs you can check on the Brother site but there is no substitute for experimentation.

Thanks so much for this! I've been looking at mylar sheets on Amazon but wasn't really sure which ones to get as far as the thickness. And I definitely wanted to sort of semi-transparent white instead of clear. And also the speed and cut pressure and all that kind of stuff. I do have a question. I'd like to make one with hearts but have every other line of the hearts offset. Is there a way to do that or would it just be a nightmare trying to do every line and offsetting every other line? I have the dx125

Thanks Debadoo. You can add offsets to as many hearts as you want. You just wouldn't use the process I showed. That is because when you use a Pattern Interval, all of the items have to be the same. You can add hearts, duplicate them, add offsets to some, etc. but then you can use the Auto Layout feature to fit everything on the mat.

@@PaperedChef Thanks! I haven't really gotten to play with my machine much due to lack of space to set it up, but it's good to know that I can do that.

Hi, I'm a scan'n'cut novice I have just bought the basic CM300 machine and wondered if there is a way to make an age card where the actual number is the card back and front?

I created some stencils in canvas workspace. Can I cut Mylar with standard blade if I adjust cut speed and cut pressure?
@PaperedChef
@PaperedChef 3 жыл бұрын
This video was featuring the SDX125 and for that, I used the Standard Blade. If you are cutting stencils with the CM models, you can use the Deep Cut blade. Here is a tutorial on that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKGmgIZ9Z9WVaMU

Just have a quick question that you may have answered in the video. What is the thickest Mylar this machine can cut through??
@PaperedChef
@PaperedChef 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure what the thickest is but I’ve cut 7mm no problem. Use a Deep Cut Blade with CM models.

Chef, I believe I’ve asked before, but I haven’t heard from you, I know you’re so busy & probably just haven’t had the time, I apologize. Do you have, or does someone have a layout of all the ScanNcut icons with their names & or something that tells what they do?

Thanks Karla, you can use any links to Amazon and then search for other items. Here are the exact links. This is for the CM models. You don't need a Deep Cut Blade if you have Autoblade. • Brother ScanNCut Deep Cut Blade Holder: amzn.to/2VyKekI • Brother ScanNCut Deep Cut Blade: amzn.to/2DBKR2q

Thanks Amy, I knew how to look for it on Amazon, I just wanted to give you the affiliate tip. Thank you so much. Will you have your latest class on sale soon? On disability my money is a lot tighter than it used to be. Gotta take advantage of the sales. I really learned so much from the previous classes.

I enjoy what I did learn from your video, but it was obvious you didn't think it through before you made it. There was WAY TOO MUCH repeating. Also, if you aren't using an item in the video you shouldn't mention in your tutorial. I am just criticing the video, not saying it was bad, but it was hard to watch. You could have gotten you tutorial into 30 mins if you would stay focused on what you are explaining. I don't usually watch tutorials over 30 minutes, but I just purchased the new scan and cut and wanted a few pointers. Like I said what you were trying to create in your tutorial was good, but it was too helicoptery. But thank you for they lesson. I did learn something.
