Terrible! It’s obvious that neither defendant has the capacity to care for themselves! Why object to the sister’s testimony about their mental health??? I bet those parents got checks for them, but now we can’t discuss their mental capacity? They lost both parents and now being charged with murder… while the sister runs off in the sunset with her family? I think the father was responsible, but since he’s deceased they pinned it on the children? I’m disgusted! Also, where were the Adult Protective Services reports? Did they turn a blind eye as well? I know they did when I reported the nursing home for neglecting and causing the death of my grand mother! The system is so corrupt! This is wrong!

This is a situation where the mom should have been placed in a Nursing Home. These two could not provide adequate care. My guess is that they kept her home to be able to stay in the home & have access to her checks. This is all very sad, the suffering has to be immense. These children were not caregivers. The mom could have received serviced from a home health agency with nursing and personal care. Mom was most likely eligible under Medicaid. The hospital had an obligation to protect Sheila Murray to Adult Protective Services. The two kids are not just the only ones to blame here. The entire system let her down.

She is smart enough to call APS, when her dad refused and then after, knowing how inept these two are. She knew her mom was being neglected. My dad passed in hospice in 2020 and my mom in a nursing home in 2023. She was to live with us, I knew I couldn’t handle it alone and BEGGED my sister a nurse, my older siblings for help, they didn’t do anything.. The amount of suffering this woman endured is incomprehensible. Sonya was aware that her siblings were incapable of providing the necessary level of care before her discharge from the hospital in 2015. She chose to ignore the horrific neglect Sheila suffered in the following years. A simple phone call to Adult Protective Services could have prevented the abuse this poor woman experienced. Karen and Michael appear to have diminished mental capacities. Shame on Sonya. Her mother deserved better.

In all fairness she did make it known she didn’t agree and offered to take her in. Dad said no. You can tell these two are special needs. And those boils will be a pimple for a few days then it turn into an infects puss. Also, these two do not onow what it takes to do in home care as they had no special treatment. I have seen bedsores to the bone in many hospitals and nursing homes. Instead of going after these special needs people who do not have critical thinking skills to research what to do when something happens or even know to research she needs to go after the hospitals where this happens ALL DAY, EVERYDAY!!! The father is the one who forced this situation. And he is dead so they are going after special needs. And the hospitals could have had the social workers keep her in the hospital, but they did not. This os not murder in the first degree. And these two do not have common sense. I dont if the father’s strong personality was too much for these two special needs people but even the daughter out of state could not interfere. So that should tell you something right there.

So she goes hard on the two kids living in the home. It’s making me angrier and angrier as she goes on. I bet she’s never been in this situation. But I bet if she was, no matter what her parents wanted, she would have put her in a facility because she can afford it. She doesn’t have the compassion that is needed to be a caregiver. This is not homicide or murder. The nurse practitioner seems more responsible than these kids. She should have done thorough evaluation with each visit. Did the social worker at the nursing home do a home visit to determine if care at home was safe. I think the NP and hospital and nursing home are more responsible than these kids. Did anyone ever offer to get a home care aid for personal care? Why didn’t PT report the lack of care? Did anyone offer a hospital bed with a special mattress for a bed bound patient. THIS DOESN’T SEEM TO BE RIGHT. It seems that the father neglected his wife, and when he died the two siblings continued to neglect their mother. My degrees are in psychology, and from the way that the two siblings appear they appear to be undeveloped, and they might have mental disorders. Karen Murray doesn’t appear 49, and Michael Murray doesn’t appear 43. They should have had psychological evaluations and IQ tests, before being charged with first degree murder, because they do not appear cognitively able to take care of themselves. Hopefully, their lawyers will appeal the verdict, and get them evaluated.

What a horrible miscarriage of justice--totally unbelievable that these two would even be tried for murder. They are incapable of caring for themselves, let alone another human being. Their very obvious adaptive deficits should have precluded them from being assigned as her caregivers in the first place. They were doing what their father insisted that they do despite not having the skills to take on such an enormous responsibility. The trial was embarrassing and the defense lawyers seemed nonplussed by their clients and/or the case. Very sad outcome and a very sad commentary on the justice system.

As a health professional working outside of the United States/ what this case highlights to me is the systemic failure of the health department. When there is no funding to provide adequate resources and education to caregivers, the end result is the death of the most vulnerable in society. May Sheila Murray’s death not be in vain and may another life not be lost because of lack of $ to help support home based care to elderly and disabled individuals.

Karen and Michael have been "Caretakers" of their mother since 2015. There is evidence that they were capable and did provide care for her in the beginning. But probably after Sonia's last visit on July 4th, Michael and Karen stopped providing basic care. They stopped changing her, stopped bathing her, stopped providing nutrition and hydration. They left her lying on a filthy mattress full of urine and feces. This hasn't been the condition since 2015. It was after July 4th, 2019. Then 5 weeks later she was brought to the hospital and died. The ankle wound had fecal matter in it, that the ICU nurses had to clean out first. This was extreme neglect. It wasn't how they treated her all along.

@@gingersnap1552 There are many other indicators that the mother, due to her morbid obesity, spent much of her time immobile and those, raised in such environments, tend to 'make do' in their situation, especially when it's all they know. Having worked in a field wherein I needed to assess clients for levels of care (once they were referred to us), I would encounter persons who, to the outside world, worked a job, appeared a normally functional individual and yet, whose abode resembled a landfill. We're talking mountains of waste, even bottles of their urine and bags of fecal matter because they could no longer reach their bathroom. Not once did it occur to them to start taking their rubbish out or to clean their bathroom and kitchen. They wore the one suit which was kept pristine for work and which stank of mothballs, When asked why they didn't establish a cleaning/waste removal routine, they'd reply, "That was my mother's job" - she'd been dead 15 years. And when their teeth rotted due to not cleaning them, they simply pulled them out because they didn't have the first clue that they should consult a dentist. There's a great deal more to the Henrys familial dynamics that hasn't been presented and there were others, who had regular visitation/contact who also just accepted the situation for what it was, and they should have faced charges, too. The victim was cruelly let down by a society that simply didn't care enough, nor was she was the only victim either.

The middle sister was very well aware of the condition of their mother, she knew the filthy condition of the home because she lived in it prior to moving away, and she knew for a fact that her father, brother , & sister was in no way capable of taking care of the mother!! She saw it all but did NOTHING AT ALL!! She threw her siblings under the bus to get the heat off of her!!! Also their father was the authoritarian of the home, therefore Karen & Michael were basically forced to try to take care of their mom but not having a clue of how to take care of their mother or themselves!! This court case is so wrong on all levels!!

Everybody including the state should be held responsible. 1st and far most Ms Sheila should have been under a doctor's care. Did she have doctor appts? 2. The sister who was married came and looked at her mom in bed? She never assisted with feeding, changing diapers/ bed linen, feeding??? She never lifted the sheets to take a look... Her mother was rotting...it doesn't make sense. The nurse just stopped coming?? Ms Sheila didn't have follow up appts for doctor visits ? The medical professionals failed Ms Sheila as well.

I think this family had major secrets. We can only speculate on what role the father played in neglecting his wife’s health, the power and control he likely held within the household for at least 40 plus years. There is a reason why the middle daughter, Sonya, didn’t return home after leaving for college. It looks like she wanted to forget growing up in the family home. I don’t buy the fried chicken story one bit. If the house was always messy, what was going on with the parents? Dad was a police officer, did Sheila ever work? The family was likely viewed as outcasts. Sheila might’ve had some mental health issues, the entire family might’ve been victims of domestic violence or some unfair power dynamic. Michael and Karen look beat down. They are obviously victims as well. Where are their advocates? What about members of the community? Other perspectives on the family situation needed to be explored.

I had a bed bound mother in law. I went to visit her. I saw that she had used the bathroom on herself, I could smell it. There were three adults in the house when I arrived to visit. I was irritated with her family members for not cleaning my mother in law. I asked them why. Their excuse was they were praying for a nurse to stop by. I told them it was their responsibility to care for her. Lol...my mother in law did not like me, I didn't care about that. I immediately began preping and cleaning my mother in law. I made the family help. I cleaned her bedding and treated her the way I did my infants. I let my husband move back home with his mother for a few weeks and I checked in every day. We have to care for our elders.

I have been a caregiver my whole life (40 yrs) and when their mother was in the nursing home a social worker should have stepped in and found medical services for this family that would have been paid for and provided the care she needed. Michael and Karen are definitely mentally challenged and should not have been held responsible for the overwhelming care their mother needed. These children, because that is what they are even at their age, had no idea how to care for their mother. Their sister should have stepped in and taken charge to find the intensive care her mother needed. Her father could not provide this level of care either. Why do you think Michael and Karen have shown no reaction to what is happening to them being tried and convicted ? They are not mentally capable of realizing how or why they are in this situation. These children, and that is what they are, mentally challenged, do not need 51 years in prison, but need mental health treatment. I hope their lawyers and a social worker step up and do what is right for Michael and Karen. ❤😇🙏❤️😇🙏❤️

I agree completely! Why wasn’t a social worker or home health worker involved with this case? The family CLEARLY were in over their heads! It’s just so pitiful and sad. Well at least they will be housed and fed and clothed in better conditions than they lived in before, in prison. They’ll have stability they’ve evidently never had. Even the health aide failed to properly care.

Our judicial system is unfair in this case; the state should be on trial, along with the out-of-town sister! I was shocked (in my opinion) by the sister who would visit and 'observe,' knowing her brother and sister were not capable of taking care of their Mom; with the miasma of urine and feces that permeated her room, and she didn't think to sanitize her Mom's room or pull the covers back to see if she hadn't been changed or the sheets, or if she needed a bath, or hire someone to come in and clean, especially her Mom's room. We could see that the brother and sister have some type of mental illness, and she knew it! What sisterly neglect! Their Mom was not verbal- she talked through her eyes; the stable sister didn't talk to her to watch how her Mom looked at her - that's right, she stayed in a hotel. She visited her Mom as if she was in a hospital or a nursing facility. I wanted them to ask, 'Did you ever think to pull the blanket down or off to observe her condition?' To see that one of her breasts was stuck under her armpit to remove it! I pray this case goes to the highest courts! May the Mom RIP

As a nurse, I can look at Karen and Michael and tell that they were not capable of taking care of their mother. They may have known that their mother needed complete care but it appears that they were incapable to give the care. If the home care nurse would have reported these conditions to adult protective services immediately of the lack of care the mother received. The adult protective services would have had the mother removed by court order. These defendants appear to be incapable of providing any assistance or care! They may be aware of a need but I know they didn’t completely understand all what was required of them. I think that the defendants should be evaluated for mental challenges, they were given tasks that they clearly couldn’t handle😢

Supposedly, they had both had jobs, off and on. Evidently, they don’t have a strong work ethic. There’s a good chance they had a decent amount of government (taxpayers)benefits, coming to the house.
