Hunting Past Helgoland The Times: 22 February 1913 The destroyers HMS Alarm, and A-Class, and HMS Barfleur, and B-Class, ventured far into German waters past the naval station on Helgoland Island to find a reported convoy of nine Helgoland class 8 thousand ton, 48 man crewed armed transports escorted by the V-13 class destroyers V-2 and V-3. The two ships moved to attack, with the HMS Alarm in the lead. They pounded on the V-2 as she came up to attack, but dodged her torpedoes and failed to hit her with torpedoes in return. However the 3” mark 4 guns on the HMS Alarm and the HMS Barfleur were able to sink the V-2 from an ammunition detonation following the destruction of a main gun and flooding, with the two Royal Navy Destroyers deciding to deal with the V-3 before turning on the transports. With the destroyer division closer now, the V-3 did not last as long. Between the two ships there were only eight survivors recovered after the battle. The division then broke up, with the HMS Barfleur taking the north flank of the convoy and the HMS Alarm taking the south. They sometimes fired on the same target or sometimes dealt with their own. The ships sunk by the HMS Alarm were the Grosser Küfurst V, Ägir IV, Hessen VI, and Helgoland II, all lost to flooding. The HMS Barfleur sank the Braunschweig IV which broke apart. The two ships sank the Kaiser Wilhelm II #2 and Kaiser Karl der Grosse #4 together, flooding them out. Not a good day for Emperors. The combined fire of the two Royal Navy destroyers was so intense that it simply broke apart both the Siegfried and the Hildebrand III. In total the German Merchant Marine lost 72 thousand tons of shipping capacity with only 38 survivors, not even enough to man one of their Helgoland transports.

Mecklenberger Bucht The Times: 16 April 1913 Is there anything more satisfying than to catch a convoy of critical war materials only miles from port in one of their own bays? This the HMS Pallas did again to a convoy of ten Frithjof class 9 thousand ton 37 man crewed merchant ships heading into the Mecklenberg Bucht escorted by the Stuttgart class protected cruiser Condor. With only the support of the B-Class destroyer HMS Boreas, the Tribune class semi-armoured cruiser challenged the Kriegsmarine in their own Baltic Sea. As they closed on the enemy the HMS Boreas surged forward to draw the torpedo strikes from the Condor. Once the HMS Pallas had come up to engage the Condor she released the HMS Boreas to attack the convoy. The Pallas suffered badly at the hands of the Condor, and she signaled that she would continue the fight until the HMS Boreas sunk all the merchant ships, then break off. The HMS Boreas simply worked her way up the merchant ship convoy back to front. She sank the Braunschweig V with four suvivors, the Hannover II with two survivors, the Rheinland IV with five survivors, the Goeben VI with one survivor, the Thüringen, Tirpitz IV, Hessen VIII, and Wettin II with two survivors each, the Frithjof IV with one survivor, and the Hildebrand IV with all hands lost. In total the German Merchant Marine lost 92 thousand tons of shipping capacity and 349 officers and merchant seamen killed. Her job done, the HMS Boreas signaled the Condor that she would leave retrieving the seamen from the sea to the Condor as they were aboard unarmed transports and thus were not subject to being taken prisoners of war. This distracted the Condor and allowed the HMS Pallas to escape with only sixty-nine casualties. The HMS Boreas suffered four casualties. The Kriegsmarine reported that the Condor suffered fifty-eight casualties in the battle.

Okay, I think I finally understand what the targeting progress UI is trying to say, and that what happened to the Jag starting at 33:25 isn't a bug at all. Let's break it down. At 33:25, The Jaag loses aim for whatever reason. The 3% -100% means the aiming progress got reduced by 100% down to 3% (so it was at 103% before I guess) At 34:08. 0% -3% means the Jaaag lost the final 3% of aiming progress and is now down to 0%. At 34:11, 0% +0% means the Jaaaag made a slight gain in aiming progress, something under half a percent. At 34:14, the Jaaaaag makes a considerable 41 plus a bit percent jump in the aiming progress. You can see this as a 42% +41%, the progress is rounded up while the progress change is rounded down. At 34:17, the Jaaaaaag gains about 60% more aiming progress, resulting in the total progress being over 100%, which is shown as "Aimed". The UI showing things like 50% -50% isn't buggy nonsense numbers. It's two numbers, where the first is aiming progress, and the second is change of aiming progress caused by the previous salvo or other event.

The Nettuno The Times: 10 June 1913 Two months ago the Regina Marina was reported to have one active battleship and was building 56 new ships. Please tell us the Nettuno (Neptune) was the one battleship, because to be building this Scudo della Fede class pre-pre-Dreadnought today is a crime against their country. A 12 thousand ton ship, she carries two twin 10” turrets fore and aft, and a mix of various smaller calibers. With a crew of only 524, reportedly all straight out of basic training with cadet officers, she has a speed of only 17.9 knots. Of course she only takes 15 months to build, so maybe she was a new build. The HMS Tribune, lead ship of her semi-armoured cruiser class was leading a training and doctrine exchange mission with the HMS Acanthus, an A-class destroyer, and a group of Royal Hellenic Navy Ships, the HHMS Conquest, an Interceptor ’05 class fast protected cruiser, the HHMS Brisk, a B-Class destroyer, and two A-class destroyers, HHMS Basilisk and HHMS Senator. They received a confused report that an Italian cruiser was operating with three torpedo boats in the Adriatic, and though not wanting to engage such a force they still scouted it out prior to planning to withdraw. They were surprised to discover that the force was actually three Evangeliste Terricelli class 4 thousand ton 21 man crewed merchant ships escorted by the out of date Italian battleship. The Commander aboard the HMS Tribune consulted with the Antiploiarchos aboard the HHMS Conquest, and they agreed to engage in an all-out attack on the Italian ships. The plan worked to a T, with all the ships of the mixed squadron contributing, though the HHMS Brisk and HHMS Basilisk led the attack against the Nettune, sinking her with all but twenty-two of her 524 officers and ratings killed or lost at sea. Three merchant seamen survived from the Evangeliste Terricelli, Climene, and Alessandro Malaspine. The HHMS Brisk took one slight hit, but suffered no casualties.

Secretary of the Admiralty Ricky Kopf June 1913 Our war against Austria-Hungary is over after failing to end our blockade. They did offer Serbia up for us to colonize; however, we declined their offer because that new territory would have been a logical nightmare. Speaking of new territories, the German colony of Tanganyika is now under British rule, and we now aim to fully expel the Germans out of Africa in its entirety. The strategy, have the British Army attack Uganda from Sudan and South Sudan while the Royal Navy liberates Kenya from the Germans via naval invasion. However, not long after, the Italians have decided to go to war against us after framing us for assassinating one of their great politicians. We, along with our Greek friends also had a David vs. Goliath battle where 2 light cruisers and three destroyers against an Italian battleship who was escorting three transports. We, of course, won the engagement with the Greek destroyer, Basilisk, sinking the mighty battleship, Nettuno, by setting a lot of fires on the ship while receiving no damage in return. I am sure this is a great moral booster for the Greeks, and I am also certain the Italians will be humiliated once they receive word of how they lost one of their battleships. Doin't worry, the Germans are also losing ships as well with HMS Indomitable winning a battle against two cruisers while out in a thunderstorm in the North Sea. Meanwhile, the Spanish and Portuguese also lost some ships, most notably the battleship Voltaire. It seems the Portuguese were so desperate for a battleship they failed to see how well it will perform in battle. This was learned the hard way when, after extensive fires sank the ship, she suddenly started suffering from flash fires as all of her currents popped off. I am quite concerned about the French battleships if they are that bad. Join us next time as we see the whether we can make peace with the Germans, and whether we annex more colonies from our enemies.

I do hope that at some point we get to see ships explode like you see in historical photos from both world wars, I am curious to see how they would implement it. Take for instance when you blew up that CA, the squalls and low clouds should have lit up orange briefly in the distance. I think that they could pull off explosions quite well if they base them on real world examples, like the Beirut port explosion

North Sea Gales Make Battles Difficult The Times: 12 March 1913 The Indefatigable class battlecruiser HMS Indomitable accompanied by the B-Class destroyer HMS Barfleur were chasing down reports of two Kriegsmarine ships operating in the North Sea. They found the Admiral Hipper, repaired from her encounter in October last, and the new Danzig class protected cruiser Elbing in typical North Sea March weather. A raging gale Normally, this would be terrible weather for a storm, but the HMS Indomitable lives up to her name. While the HMS Barfleur charged ahead to spot the enemy in the crash of thunder and the flash of lightening, the HMS Indomitable closed quickly. Which was fortunate, as the HMS Barfleur sailed too close to the Admiral Hipper and took a hit that started the ship flooding, damaged #3 engine, and killed three sailors. The HMS Barfleur was ordered to retreat from the fight when she reported her condition. This left the HMS Indomitable alone against two other ships together weren’t half her displacement. After hitting the Admiral Hipper a number of times the HMS Indomitable got a hit through her main belt, taking out a casemate gun and setting the ship on fire that she could not contain. The remaining thirty-eight officers and ratings of her crew abandoned ship and took to the life boats, only to be picked up later by the HMS Barfleur. The HMS Indomitable then turned her guns on the Elbing, and a 13.5” shell through her aft belt destroyed a casemate gun and started flooding that quickly spread through the ship. The Elbing went down with 941 of her 1020 man crew. Seventy-nine were picked up by the HMS Indomitable. The HMS Indomitable was not hit by the Elbing, but took damage from the Admiral Hipper, suffering thirteen casualties.

Dude, you need some new cruisers. You've built new battleships, battlecruisers and destroyers, but you've got 2 types of cruiser, 1 of which is barely adequate, the other of which is not. The Tribunes are slow and badly armed, and need to be sent to guardship Port Stanley duties. Holy Mother of Jesus The Times: 17 May 1913 Nothing wards off a 13.5” shell from a Royal Navy battlecruiser. And the Armada Real Española should learn that naming ships after Mary, the mother of our Savior Jesus isn’t going to work either. The Tiger class 13.5” armed battlecruiser HMS Jaguar, accompanied by the A-Class destroyer HMS Adder, were hunting Spanish convoys off the coast of Spain just north of Portugal when she encountered a convoy of four Proserpina class 8 thousand ton 42 man crewed merchant ships escorted by the Spanish Santiago el Mayor class armoured cruiser Virgen (Virgin) and the French built Surveillante class pre-Dreadnought of the Royal Portuguese Navy Voltaire. Though armed with 13.2” guns, she only carries four, and the ship apparently hasn’t been refitted since Portugal bought it from the French Republic. Though the HMS Jaguar opened fire on sighting the enemy, it was actually the Virgen that got the first major hit with her 8.2” guns, penetrating the aft most compartment of the Jaguar and starting flooding in the aft most compartment that was never controlled during the battle. The HMS Jaguar put hits on the Voltaire while the HMS Adder torpedoed the Virgen, but the Virgen struck back, and the HMS Adder was ordered to retire from the combat having suffered four casualties. With her escort gone, the HMS Jaguar put all guns on the Virgen and kept on her until a main belt penetration destroyed a secondary gun and caused fires on the ship. Eventually the Virgen sank with 759 Armada Real Española officers and ratings killed or lost at sea and 94 survivors. The HMS Jaguar then turned her 13.5” guns on the Voltaire while she worked her way up the convoy with her 5” guns. She sank the Santa Bárbara La Chata II with all hands, the Kert with two survivors, the Vicente Yañez Pinzón with one survivor, and the Proserpina with three survirors. The convoy dealt with, the HMS Jaguar began to close on the Voltaire. Though she suffered temporary failure of her fire director, the HMS Jaguar was able to fix it, though not before taking another aft belt penetration that extended her flooding one compartment forward. The HMS Jaguar was able to beat down the Voltaire, forcing her 751 surviving crew to abandon the ship to uncontrollable fires that took the lives of 422 Royal Portuguese Navy officers and ratings. The Jaguar suffered 39 casualties. Six initially reported as injured were treated and returned to duty.
