I was in the Black Forrest on winding roads. It was dark, dreary, and thick. Perfect for stories and tales.

We were stationed in Hanau from 72 to 96. My dad later retired there. It was amazing. There was a legend that the brothers Grimm would exchange places at midnight on New Years Eve. The one standing would sit down and the one sitting down would stand up. Seems like if you are drunk enough you can actually see it happen or so I hear. Hanau was the best place to grow up.😊

I grew up with these stories which were in a beautifully illustrated book. So interesting to hear about the actual brothers Grimm who took these folklore stories from grim to fairytales suitable for children.

Someone gave me a set of two books that had all the true fairy tales, nicely illustrated, and a few extras. I remember Snow White and Rose Red and Snow White and the Huntsman

The Brothers Grimm's tales are part of my childhood and the childhood of my sisters in Brazil. Those books have long since disappeared from my sight and my life still reminds me of my parents. It took me a long time to realize that other Brazilian children did not always have books or know the Brothers Grimm tales that I read and reread and that enriched my childhood. But to this day I know nothing about their lives. This documentary filled a gap in my intellectual life.

Die Bruder Grimm was the first book I ever read. I got tired of waiting for my mother to read them to me which spurred me on to learn to read. The book was printed in Gothic German The stories were full of adventure, danger, death, stupidity, romance, misery, love, loss, generosity and compassion. Many ended happily with the human spirit winning out against evil. Wonderful stories.

Growing up I was blessed to have my parents and my paternal grandmother read to me both from Grimm’s Fairy Tales and the stories of Hans Christian Andersen. One grandpa was German and the other one was Danish, and they and their parents had also grown up with these stories being an important part of their childhoods. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized that most of my friends and acquaintances had heard few if any of these stories or most of the Mother Goose nursery rhymes. At that point I decided that I would begin giving books of the Grimms’ and HC Andersen’s stories along with books nursery rhymes as baby and birthday gifts to children. Almost invariably the baby’s/little child’s parents will tell me that except for Cinderella and Snow White they didn’t hear or read these stories growing up and that they feel badly for missing out on these stories. These stories, ancient as many of them are, are a part and should continue to be a part of our cultural heritage because they teach timeless lessons while also being entertaining.

if you are going to use subtitles, least you can do is make them big enough for us to read... giving you a thumbs down. would have liked to have done otherwise...

This 'docudrama' was obviously not produced for English speaking audiences with no German language skills. It is too bad that for this edition (KZbin video) there is no English 'voice-over' for the explanatory and important spoken German sections. Regrettably, I am unable to pay close enough attention to fully read the script (subtitles) while admiring the costumes and scenery, or look at the faces of the actors or professionals - or step away and still hear the dialog while understanding it (sorry, I took Spanish). I will have to save this video for some other time when I can sit for a couple hours to start and stop the video with undivided attention. Too bad for me, I really enjoy the lore of the Grimm brothers - when I was in Germany we made it a point to see their statue; I grew up reading their stories. Short of the Bible, I believe Grimms were the first authors who's name I remembered.

If you can stand a feminist slant, read “Women who run with the wolves “ It explains what a fairytale is hiding and illuminating. It breaks down old stories for modern readers. By CP Estes
