Amon uses his mastery of bloodbending to "sever" an individual's bending connection by blocking their active chi paths, effectively achieving the same result as energybending. This information comes from the "The Legend of Korra-The Art of the Animated Series, Book One: Air", page 118.

I think this episode makes you understand why Katara outlawed bloodbending. Sadly, very few people realize why you shouldn't use bloodbending on anyone.

Yeah, this episode really nails it in how OP bloodbending is. I mean sure, you can argue that Amon is the biggest hypocrite ever since he's literally erasing bending WITH bending, but there's no denying that he gets results in the end....

Bloodbending is a good tool for medicine, circulation problems or some diseases would have a solution.
