1. It was actually confirmed by the author that, if Ains and Nazarick hadn't arrived, Zanac, Renner and their father would have actually created a respectable and relatively prosperous Kingdom. But it just wasn't in the cards. 2. The talk Ains had with Zanac actually affected him significantly. He saw him as true royalty and was actually starting to think of excuses on how to not destroy the *whole* kingdom or even call it off entirely. So seeing that Zanac was killed by his own men really shook Ains to the core. Sure, he was going to die anyway, but at least it would have been in battle protecting his people, instead he died in a tent in the middle of nowhere, his head brought to him like a trophy. We see this explicitly both in Ains telling Albedo to bury him with dignity and in Ains sitting down with no dramatic flourish. He was just *done* at that point. 3. The thing about sending them to Neuronist is that she actively *gags* her victims. So the nobles can't beg for death even if they wanted to.

1. That scenario was if Renner, Zanack, Raeven, and Gazef were alive - impossible, since Gazef would be killed by the Sunlight Scripture if not for Ainz 2. He had no intention to call it off or spare them. Do not spread this lie if you do not have a quote to support it. The only mercy Ainz was going to give them was to kill them as painlessly as possible per Zanacks request. 3. They can beg even when gagged, like how Neuronist roughly understood the member of Gringams team when the workers invaded Nazarick. He is simply expressing how he wants them to suffer

The sad thing is: The meeting is of course in the novels too. But as far, as i got it from others (i never read the novels), Ainz thought of cancelling the attack after he met with Zanac. Until the other idiotic nobels came with Zanac's head. After that, he was angry and didn't cared for the battle anymore

Zanac had one of the best character development arcs of any Re-Estize noble in the show. When we first meet him, he seems like an arrogant prick who picks on his sister. By the time he dies, we get to understand that he really did just want what was best for his country. He’s also one of the few people to really see Ainz for what he is. His death is tragic and impactful. You really feel bad for the poor guy. Unlike his brother Barbro, whose death we all cheered for. And yes, that was Clementine’s brother in the scene with Aindra and the Blue Roses.

Zanac was such a good character, I wish he didn't die but at the same time it only makes both ainz and him more respectable as Ainz said Zanac was true royalty, both respected one another.

It's sad because Ainz found what he was looking for in a king. In the LN he talks about wanting to get closer and be friends with Jircniv and learn about being a king by watching him. He could've learned from Zanac since they had similar problems with being a leader, they could relate. He really needs to find someone he can be himself around and talk about his troubles. He's the leader but also trapped in his thoughts. I think being undead and their passives helps him stay sane.

Interestingly in the novel after the scene where Ainz meets Zanac, Zanac notes that Ainz is far scarier than he initially thought because Ainz appears to lack the weakness that plagues powerful beings which is arrogance.

Something that was left out of the anime was just how deep and truthful Ainz's response of happiness was to Zanac. See the longer Ainz stays in the new world the more it's dawning on him that his precious friends are gone and they're coming back which is very painful and even lonely for Ainz and because of this he's trying to find some semblance of happiness with the NPC's who he considers the children of his friends and actually the only remaining thing to truly remember them by. He will do ANYTHING in order to secure their safety even if it means murdering the entire world to achieve that. So truly the only thing he's seeking anymore is to create a happy future with the NPC's and hope it grants him the "happiness" he longs for. This was the most truthful Ainz has ever been to anyone since Overlord started because every human in the new world either worships him or is terrified of him and telling the NPC's about his true intentions do not add up to that 1,000 year plan they think he has. He opened up to Zanac in a way he'd never opened up to anyone these past 4 seasons. So it's no surprise that Ainz was so pissed off when Zanac died

@@BrothersYeo Yes and in the novel by the end Ainz expressed in his inner thoughts how impressed he was with Zanac thinking that at this time if the roles were reversed he does not believe he could handle the situation as well as Zanac was and his main takeaway from that conversation was that it was very educational to see just how much more he has to learn about conducting himself as a king and that Zanac displayed that whole heartedly. Also sorry to correct my english I meant that his precious friends are gone and they're NOT coming back. I forgot the "not" XD

I don't know where people got the idea that Ainz was going to "spare the Kingdom" from. He was still going to destroy it in such a way that there would be survivors. But with the death of Zanac, he stopped caring about saving a few and just wanted to be done with it. Also, fun fact: That flaming skeletal horse that Ainz was riding, is actually powerful enough to bring a city to its knees. By itself.

Interesting change is that Zanac's thoughts about Ainz's happiness and about how he never felt he was fit to be ruler but just wanted to make the kingdom a better place didn't happen on horseback like in the anime but instead when he drew his sword against those traitorous nobles. Ainz's words of "happiness" was literally Zanac's final thoughts as he met his end. This for me made his death even sadder thinking that as he died his final thoughts was about what Ainz told him, and that he only wanted to make the kingdom a better place.

I just love the talk between Zanac and Aniz. And especially his response "Happiness". The idea that this skeleton overlord who represent the evil being conquering the world and bringing death wherever they go would give such a simple, noble, and human answer, making his character so much more relatable to us, viewers, but also the people in the show... I was just in awe. I liked it very much !

Zanac originally was someone I didn't really like, but as time went on, you see that he's obviously a very practical and well thought individual. He's cunning but he does want to protect his kingdom, so he never crosses the line into being a selfish prick, despite originally seeming like he'd be that type of character. It was an excellent subversion done by the author with his character. Ainz also respected him, he came alone before Ainz, to even try and negotiate, he asked the most important questions that gave Ainz pause. And in the end he saw that even though Ainz is undead, he though he's capable of destroying whole armies by himself, Ainz still wants to just be happy, and so that's why Zanac thinks he's surprisingly human. Zanac probably was preparing himself mentally for any number of reasons that he just couldn't understand or that simply proved Ainz as an evil being. But the answer he got, was a relatively human one, and wasn't really an evil goal. So yeah, I knew it was likely that Zanac was going to die, but seeing him betrayed and killed by his own people was just terrible. Ainz also lost his patience with the whole ordeal after that, he just wants to be done with this and get back to something else entirely.

This is just a fun fact to not spoil everything. Ainz has an inhuman mentality in the series implied not only because he’s in the body of an undead, but the LN is the only thing that really explains it, the anime kinda forgot; but ainz is from a kind of futuristic capitalist dystopia where all the world governments were overthrown by corporations, so he’s already pretty emotionless towards the death in the LN. Like when he talks about how it was just him and his mother as his only real family in a small apartment in the basically ghetto of his area, until his mother died of fatigue one day and Ainz/Suzuki woke up and saw her body and was just emotionless and just kind of rationalized it in his head. Ainz’s cold attitude towards death isn’t JUST because of his undead body is the fun fact, but also his upbringing because even before he was ainz he has a pretty cold attitude about death

@@BrothersYeo I’m guessing they didn’t include it because it could really only be mentioned in season 1, and the executive company didn’t want to take a risk by adding that in because it breaks the conventional standard of isekai, where most of them are just kind of meant for teens and tweens and don’t include complex real world political subtext or satire about the kind of people that own these kinds of anime studios. Which is unfortunate because one of the best things about the overlord light novel, the thing it’s widely praised for, is how interesting and detailed and real the world feels. The mysteries with the new world are also incredibly interesting, but the anime includes almost 0 of anything even showing that ainz lives in the future or a dystopia because it’s not a cookie cutter world, even though that world is incredibly interesting.

Its great writing that one scene was able to change perspective on a character. Early on its hard to peg Zanac as he is seen as scheming prince and potential antagonist later on. Add in Renner before showing her true colors seems even more true of good vs evil nature. Yet ironically was the opposite the whole time.
