Over the past weeks i set up 3 tanks, a 60 gal, 55 gal and a 20 gal. They were all used tanks except for the 60 gal. The 55 gal was badly maintained and head an algae and nastiness infestation. I cleaned it and put it back together but the algae inmediately came back. So week later i took everything apart again, replace filter tubes and everything, however again the algae is slowly creeping back up. I transferred some uncleaned rocks without thinking from the 55 to the 60, now boths water is brown. The 20 gal however has not had ANY algae in a month. Nature is weird.

Ok. I’ve had diatoms for about 2 months. I’ve scrubbed it off of everything numerous times. I bought phosgaurd and used it twice. Still couldn’t get rid of it. I had an accidental overdose of prime with purigen in my filter. My tank immediately lost oxygen and 4 out of 6 fish died immediately. I did a 50% water change and managed to save an Angelfish and Bolivian Ram. My Angelfish is still not acting normal. But guess what, my diatoms disappeared. What happened to them?

Thanks for the very informative video Jay! I haven't had problems with diatoms outside of maybe my first coupla years of fishkeeping way back when. It's not that I don't get diatoms anymore, it's just that they aren't causing problems for my tanks anymore. I never understood diatoms to the level you explained today but what I did understand was that any new tank I had (or old tank that got neglected for awhile), tended to have more diatoms. My planted tanks and softwater cichlid tanks haven't had diatom issues for years. Like you said, I really like the natural look of diatoms in my African cichlid tanks, so much so that I allow diatoms to grow in them even right now. What I do to balance things out in those tanks is I dose flourish after my weekly wc, blast the tanks with pretty high light 9hrs a day(dim lights for 3.5hrs before and after for a 16hr photo period), this basically gives me lush green algae growth on the rocks. I have noticed over the years that green algae balances out diatoms very well and I love the look in my Mbuna and Tropheus tanks particularly. Of course this also means 15mins a day cleaning my glass but that's a small price to pay imo to have nice natural looking green/brown rocks. Oh and yes, all my tanks either have overflow sumps or crazy amounts of circulation and surface agitation to ensure no oxygen issues.

I have a hand me down 24” led light ontop of my 48” long aquarium. I think I need a 48” light. I feel like my water has a lot of minerals and sediments. I did a whole tank clean, from cleaning coral to scrubbing down the walls and 50% water change. It came back within 4-5 days after going through that amount of working cleaning it out. I’ll check my water results and go from there.

So i have a planted 20long with a betta, 8 neon tetras and an african dwarf frog. The diatom bloom is pretty bad right now. 25% water change once a week for the 3 weeks it has been set up. No heater. One small air stone. I have 2 15w daylight cfls that are on a timer 10 on 14 off for now to help the plants root. I have a marineland 150 HOB with a sponge on the intake. Flow is relatively non existent on one side of the tank and on the other side where the filter is the flow is too much for my betta to swim in. Since the setup is relatively new i dont want to add to the bio load with a pleco, shrimp or snails til stuff balances out. Other than more frequent water changes what should i do to keep the bloom in check. I have black gravel and soil and the brown looks really bad building up on the surface of the substrate. This is my first planted tank and i never had diatoms in my unplanted tanks. Also i have never used any type of chemicals in my tanks. Just filtered well water with aqua safe+. Honestly never check ph levels or anything. 5yrs on my 2 unplanted tanks and the fish are thriving and have no algae problems. This planted 20 is the only one with issues.

So I realized with my tank that once I switched to a different lighting system (one that produces red, green, blue, and white light rather than just blue light) I noticed a spike in diatoms EVERYWHERE. I think it’s one of those unspoken things many fish owners deal with (I have African cichlids AND a turtle). Unless you make sure your fish eat every single piece of food you out in the tank, and you suction out any waste you may see floating.. you’re gonna have diatoms. It’s a natural process. I find I will just use an aquarium sponge to get the glass of the tank clean, and just let the diatoms grow on the rocks until my next water change. It doesn’t seem to be hurting the fish or my turtle. They are fully active and colorful so idk.

Thx from the quick reply Jay my Nitrate are at 20ppm, I have 7 Cichlids in a 45 gallon tank I know it’s a little to small. My lights are only on for 5 hours a day. I feed them only Northfin pellets once a day in the morning.

I would say the small system combined with waste maybe even the light may be too bright. Use phosphate remover first

So do diatoms make oxygen or use oxygen? Do diatoms use light or do they not use light? You have some contractions man.

Great info, my cichlid tank looks like your before pics. It actually looks natural and fish are doing well, but I rather remove it. Thanks for the info.

What type of product do I need to get rid of of brown alge
@bigsky4455 жыл бұрын
I take out all decor & wash it in hot water ONLY. No soap. Then I use a Turkey baster to suck out the rest & any free floating.

Okay, I think I got the diatoms in check... but, regarding the other issue... I'm a quad amputee with an ugly face and a microdick. What do? ... sorry, I just came here to learn about deathatoms, not take a moment of introspection. Thanks for reminding me! Flashback, flashback, flashback

That's cool thanks Jay.. diatoms! is that what they are. I've only noticed black algea in the goldfish tank in the porch as it has more natural light compared to my cichlid tank in the lounge. Your video makes sense as I've not had this before only green algea because since moving house to a fresh spring brook supply and the pH is slightly higher too where as before I was in town. Anyways very useful video thanks buddy. Hala

Information very helpful; background music not helpful at all; unnatural speaking in the beginning not helpful at all. at 2:28 you calm down and share what you know and its much less stressful to watch.

Great video!!! I've been trying to figure out how to fight the brown algae and this definitely helps. I have small amounts of brown algae and it seems to only be on one side of my tank. Now I can try some other things. Appreciate it man.
