Okay, well first of all that Dream Pop shade is not what I think of as brown mascara, it’s so red! I wear brown mascara 90% of the time and have for years as I feel it suits my blue eyes better and looks less harsh. My favourite brown mascaras are the Chanel Le Volume and YSL Lash Clash. I’d love to see you do this again with a more true brown mascara 🙂

I agree. I wear a brown mascara when I do a one and done shadow or a very soft eye look. I have tried YSL lash clash, not my favorite. I do love Chanel inimitable intense mascara and it comes in brown.

Love this video but as someone who has used mainly brown mascara for many years, I can say that is a really, really red brown! I have never seen anything like that. It doesn’t seem like a good comparison because you won’t find that shade of brown anywhere else. This is more like burgundy vs black. Typical brown mascara is much closer to black in intensity.

Hi, nedthepup here! Thanks for featuring my unpopular opinion! I think they both look lovely on you. The brown is more harmonious, softer, and romantic. It lets your natural eye color sing. However, I agree that the black is more high contrast, dramatic, and sexy. I personally prefer the brown look, but people should where whatever they want!

Honestly for me it has to be a dark brown not a midt tone or reddish brown so the impact isn’t compromised 😊 I use Clinique dark brown, L’Oréal or Max Factor 2000 Calories and love them🎉❤

I think it depends on the occasion- if it’s for work or a casual day event the soft look of the brown would be appropriate. If it’s an out on the town kind of night or a glam look for a wedding then the black.

I’m team black mascara. I am mostly a one & done shadow girl and I like my lashes to be like BAM and standout and black gives that to me. Like all makeup I think it’s all personal preference.

I like the brown a lot! I agree it's better for the simple makeup/no makeup days. I'll often wear mine (or the red Chanel one) on the bottom lashes and a standard black on top. Kind of like an illusion of a lower lashline eyeshadow without the fallout. I hear Guerlain is launching a true brown mascara this Fall!!!

I ❤️ the brown on you. It is stunning. The black maybe for an evening look but the brown is so flattering to your eye color and skin tone. True, when you’re wearing cooler or more dramatic eye makeup black may be more appropriate but for softer makeup brown is the winner.

After 45 I turned to brown mascara and never looked back! It’s not as harsh and definitely suits better blue mature eyes in my opinion. My best was the Lancôme Monsieur Big in brown but unfortunately it’s discontinued. Now I use the Lancôme Hypnose Drama but it’s a bit clumpy. I’ve also tried the Clinique High Impact mascara and liked it a lot. Loved this comparison video, thank you 😊

I miss the “soft black” mascara that used to be available. I think it was charcoal. That looked less harsh on me than straight up black, but more defined than brown.

Both look fabulous on you! Brown is definitely softer and I think it brings out the blue in your eyes. For myself, I’ve only ever worn black (except for an unfortunate emerald green incident involving my eyebrows in 1989 that we must never speak of again). I’m not sure if I’ll branch out, I’m a creature of habit and my lashes are naturally black. I’m also a bit of a Basic B if I’m honest. I’ll see if I can blag a free sample 😂

There are definitely darker brown mascaras that would also give you the "defined" look, sometimes so much so that it would be hard to tell the difference with black. On myself, I have dark brown eyes, blue and dark green mascara looked really fun...in my younger years that is, now I am am old and conservative 😅. I think this color from CT, which is more of a warm brick red-brown, works really well with your eye color.

I was given advice by a make up artist that if you have deep set or small eyes , brown often looks better as it does not close your eyes up as much. Where they are small and deep set , black mascara can exacerbate this and make your eyes look overly dark and closed so better to go with browns/ reds etc which does not dominate too much. The same is true for eyeliner which is why I often use browns and greys etc. As such for me it’s not really a colour issue but a shape one .

Hi, I think it depends on what kind of colour type you are. I am a soft summer kind of type with hazel eyes, medium blond hair and a neutral skin tone. Brown mascara is definitely the better choice for me. But you are a warm summer (maybe autumn?) kind of colour type so black mascara make your eyes really pop….

I need to find a brown tubing mascara, which I think is even harder to find. Tubing mascara is the only mascara that doesn't smudge on me. It is interesting to see the side by side comparison. I love the red/brown! It's nice to have options and not always have to wear black mascara.

I started wearing brown mascara over 30 years ago and have never looked back. I have blue eyes and brown mascara is so much more flattering for me. The brown you used was not a true brown though, it had a lot of red tones in it. Try using a proper rich chocolate brown and you'll be amazed how much it makes your eyes pop! My favourites are Dior Pump N Volume, Chanel Inimitable and Clarins Supra Volume - all of those come in black too if you wanted to do another direct comparison.

Great comparison. The Clarins Wonder Perfect 4 D mascara has become my favourite mascara. It comes in Black and brown - and the brown is darker than the CT mascara. Love both 😀

I have always worn brown mascara but I have never tried the Charlotte Tillbury "brown" .... which I wouldn't even call brown. It is more of a rust colour. I think they both look lovely on you! I find black mascara makes me look older than I am. You don't have that problem .... yet ... hehe

They both look sensational on you! I have fun with mascara and change colors up to work with my eyeshadow looks. I LOVE the dream pop color for pastel looks and green shadow looks; sometimes I go super retro with blue or purple when I have it. Then use a deeper dark brown for no make up make up, and my holy grail Wayne Goss when I want black. I have brown eyes and dark brown lashes so can see the color differences without it looking weird.

I think it works as your brows have some warmth as well. I have ash brown hair and brows, just normal brown mascaras are too warm and chocolate. I rather would like a very dark charcoal to try I think that would suit more cooler appearing folks better. Do agree there is not enough variety out there!

Not including the blue or purple mascara I wore in the 80s, I wear brown-black mascara (many drugstore mascaras have that color option). I have blond hair and blue eyes, and my skin is light-medium with an olive undertone. If black mascara is cool-toned, it really clashes with my skin and looks harsh. Brown is too light. Brown-black works the best.

charlotte looking at you on camera you could tell looking at you I would say the black looked better as the brown as you said wasn't reaching the ends but towards the end when you had built it up and had eyeshadow on I like both it would be a case of what you said I think soft eye look brown full beat definatly black I've been trying to buy a dark brown mascara I'm still looking but after to day I'm going to get the ct one you have used thankyou for showing the difference side by side really helpful xx

Oh boy! This is a tough decision. I love the black for pop but I love the color of the brown because it gives me a different feeling when I look. The brown looks fluffy and not as harsh and really pops your eye color. 3 coats, I do believe it's the color that I choose. Maybe just put brown on the tips of your lashes for 4th coat for length with the brown.Great video!

Great quick vid, Charlotte. I'm definitely a brown mascara type of gal. At the end when you were asking questions about eyeshadow I just kept thinkin' "Why don't you think about the good old color wheel?" F you have a burgundy brown versus a black, would it be more noticeable contrasting with a blue or green than the black would? If you wear golden, brown, or rosy eyeshadow would the brown consistently disappear? I suspect that it would. Light and dark aren't the only sources of contrast. Color theory may be a bigger factor that we expect. Just a thought...

I wear black and brown mascara interchangeably, depending on my mood and overall look. If you liked the burgundy, you will love a true brown. The one you used isn't a brown in my book, usually the brown ones are more similar to black but a bit softer. I use the Tarte maneater in both shades

Chanel Le Volume also comes in both black and brown- regular and waterproof. I have worn both and agree with you that the brown tends to disappear more easily. The black always stands out. So although I am fair skinned, red hair and freckles and the brown looks very natural and pretty, I usually wear the black.

Wow! I have to say that with the black mascara it pulls the focus to the lashes more than anything else on your face... they are very dramatic. With the brown, I think your eye color is absolutely beautiful and your entire makeup look is very balanced. I tried this on myself and felt the same way. I remember watching a very natural beauty, who didn't wear makeup, but dyed her lashes black. It was more subtle than using mascara, nevertheless I remember thinking that the black drew my attention away from her beautiful skin and smile. I was aware there was a subtle but seeming "hardness" about her eyes. I think it was the color black that interrupted the beautiful harmony of her otherwise natural makeup. I love this video. Thank you. I'm a brown mascara convert.

My personal preference is for somewhere in between mega black and that particular brown which looks almost maroon or burgundy? Back in the 90s I always wore "black-brown" even though I am a brunette with dark lashes. I always got compliments on my lashes, not my mascara. It was natural, less harsh looking and I still prefer that versus today's glam. Covergirl also had a "Soft Black" and a Brown with no red in it. Now they're hard to find. Bobbi Brown's "smokey eye" in the silver tube is a very soft black and the color is great but the formula is lacking volume & length and I don't like built-up mascara. It's perfect for the gym though or a casual event when I want to walk in the room before my lashes do. The falsies looks not for me unless it's a special night out. As I mature, the more youthful looking the better, but to each their own of course. As with all makeup... Whatever makes you happy!

I don't suit black as a colour to wear (I look sick!), but for some reason black mascara looks best. I wear brown sometimes for work or less glam look but black mascara gives better definition for sure. Actually love the burgundy one on you though, looks so pretty and soft

The CT mascara in this shade of brown looks great on you. I also suggest you try a real brown one. Ie Sisley has 4 or 5 types of mascara all available in brown. And those are GREAT. FYI my eye colour ranges from darker green green to dark green to dark hazel. Depends on my mood and weather. So somewhat similar to yours. The browns make our eyes pop.

🤎BROWN or burgundy on the 🌞 daily🤎, & 🖤black for 🌚 evening🖤 Depending on what you’re wearing… bear in mind, different browns have different undertone & can bring up the colours in eyes CHANEL has a gorgeous burgundy. Sweed, Charlotte Tillbury & KOREAN makeups have brown I find black heavily applied can overpower some eyeshadows, if you’re doing a soft look

I like the black better personally, but I really believe that it has to do with your coloring also. Brown mascara is definitely softer if that is a look at her going for. When I was younger, I used black brown mascara for a softer look. My eyelashes are lighter than my hair color so I need more pigment but now I wear black mascara all the time. The only thing I vary is the amount of coats I use, one coat is a little softer.

The lashes on the brown side are not as "clumpy" which is positive...but I think the eye with the brown makes your whites look dulled down a bit maybe because if the red tone in the mascara .Very interesting! I think the complexion color and foundation color would have more of an effect on the brown side.

Love this comparison! I'm a tried and true black mascara lover, hands down. Even as a blonde with pale lashes, I'm a black mascara lover, although I wore a lot of blue mascara "back in the day." I think that this particular shade of brown is a bit red rather than deep dark brown, so maybe another video?

I think the dream pop shade is brilliant until you do your bottom lashes with it. I think the bottom lashes in that shade makes your eye look a bit red. I think the top lashes only is a lovely day look x
