The left side of the protein is the greatest OD I’ve ever played. It took me a little while to connect with the ODR side but I mainly use it has secondary gain to stack with the blues breaker side. To your point, there is something really special about protein when stacked together

I use all sorts of guitars. Mainly a Les paul and tele these days. Funny enough, I’ve sold my protein. I could just never quite get on with the ODR green side. There’s a harshness that’s difficult to dial out. I might need to try out the dual BB they have now, because that side is amazing

The protein is awesome. On the d.b. I like to use a touch of the clean blend when I stack the green after the blue. The left side is overdriven going in so the clean blend opens up a touch of that sparkle and low end. The protein still wins though.

I’ve used both and enjoyed both but prefer the Protein, by far. Now the v4 DB with the red remote would really add a tone of versatility, especially if the TS side was first as it would be very similar to hitting the front of gainy amp with a TS. However the green side of the Protein is way better by itself. Running the green side set very low gain is an amazing low gain thickening trick and my favorite way to use it, albeit sacrificing its amazing higher gain capabilities.

great video, dude. i really like the nuances of the protein. my fav OD of this type(ish) has always been the KoT, primarily because there’s a unique immediacy of the initial attack that just feels open and natural and not ‘pedal-like.’ it’s almost impossible to hear this in a youtube video, but it seems like, at least compared to the DB, the Protein has more of that. i also have a very mid-forward, british flavored clean tone, so the slightly more level / scooped EQ profile of the Protein is appealing. thanks for the demo!

Thanks Joshua! Yeah from what I’ve heard, the left side of the Protein is somewhat similar to the KOT. Both originally based on a blues breaker circuit. Haven’t played a KOT though, would love to. I guess I’ll get on the wait list and get mine in 2026 🤣

@@BenNeal yeah the KoT is special and worth waiting for, imo. however, it definitely has a mid-push. much less so than a TS-type, but a touch more than a true BB type. i fount it to be truly magic with an american clean (Victoria Golden Melody in my case). it still sounds amazing with a british flavor base tone, but i’ve found a full frequency stage 1 OD (Hudson Broadcast in my case) to be my staple drive with that platform. but, i maintain that the KoT is truly the king of mid-forward OD’s that don’t do the full TS thing, shaving off the lows and highs.

I have a Browne Carbon Pedal which is the left side on its own love that pedal and i stack it with a TS9 ,of course differs from an ODR1 I'd think Browne should release the protein with a version of a TS9 circuit on the right

Real interested in the Protein and dual drives in general. Going to buy a Supro amulet for practice and small gigs. I’m new to both single channel amps and pedals in general. I play a LOT of different styles including some heavy chuggage. Perhaps I should have the protein for low-mid gain and a second pedal for the heavier stuff. Also considered the Waza craft blues driver. Any suggestions would be great

You could have been interested in the "Sandman" pedal, from the French brand "Anasounds"... But unfortunately, it was a limited reissue, mainly due to a strong demand for the "Savage MKI" which for many French musicians is the best Klon Centaur clone on the market. And they aren't easily affordable now, even on Reverb, or finally very expensive if when one is offered for sale. This one therefore included a very limited reissue of their "Savage MKI" (Klon Centaur clone) + the addition of their "Ego Driver", which is a Tube Screamer clone. But their "clones" are always made with their own secret sauce choices too aslike others do.

It’s because he’s putting the higher gain side into the lower. You always put the lower gain into the higher side to push it. Not sure why the toggle goes both ways.

I wanted to buy a DB a couple of months ago. I tried and compared a couple of pedals and I was completely blown away by the Protein. I did not expect to like the green side so much... I prefered it so much compared to the "Tubescreamer" in the DB that I went home with the Protein instead... It's hard to find a setting in the Protein that does not sound great.

Me fuí por el Protein, sin duda es el siguiente escalon, pero al final de todo se me presentó la oportunidad muy económica del King of Tone y qué carajo, me fuí con él y ahora soy el más felíz del mundo. Antes del KoT pongo un Klon Centaur como booster. Antes de todo esto tenía el Moonshine, nunca me agradó demasiado así que eso pudo haber afectado mi decisión de no querer el Barrel. Saludos

I haven’t played either one.. but they both sound very musical, and the right side of each particularly differ and provide a certain sound for certain uses. I hear a wider bandwidth on the protein. With the Double Barrel, I feel one would need a brighter amp so it won’t be a little too dark. That’s my 2 cents :)

No, no, no... You are completely wrong. In fact, they both have a Bluesbreaker clone, and neither has a Klon Centaur clone. Look and you will see I'm right... I will check myself if the Klon Centaur itself is inspired by the Bluesbreaker, but it's not sure. In any case, they are quite different overall... And having ordered two Sandman pedals from the French brand Anasounds, including a real Klon Centaur clone with their secret sauce called "Savage MKI" (certainly the best Klon Centaur clone in the world whole imo) + a Tube Screamer clone with their secret sauce too, called “Ego Driver” ; so I listened to a lot of Klon Centaur clones to get a better idea... It seems to me that the Bluesbreaker is even cleaner as a type of overdrive, with a slightly different tone sound color, while the Klon has the ability to play very also cleanly with little gain, while being able to provide more than a type of Bluesbreaker do if you push the gain a little. For example, there's something I might be interested in later : stacking a "Carbon X" pedal ("Carbon Copy" being the name of the Bluesbreaker clone from the same brand than "Protein" but the single effect one) which has two Bluesbreaker clones combined in the same kind of dual overdrive. 😉

The Double Barrel was on like literally every board in the world 5-10 years ago. I think it just fell out of fashion for the new shiny dual ods (KoT excluded). It's a great pedal and my main OD on my gigging board!

The gain switch on the Morning Glory adds gain, the plus on the moonshine adds headroom. Its dirtier when switched to the minus side. Its louder and cleaner on the plus side. Makes it great to use as a boost with the gain set low. My gain section is a Double Barrel into a Sweet Tea. I put both Moonshines first. Moonshine (set clean), Morning Glory into Moonshine (set dirty), Angry Charlie. I can cover just about any gain needs and it cuts through a mix well. The higher gain side of the Morning Glory works great for single coils. Thats I use them. Great video.

I realize I’m behind on this video. But it literally just showed up. I prefer the jhs double barrel. But if you want less mush always go lower into higher side. Also, I had the Duellist I sold it asap. I guess everyone has their particular tastes. I like a spongey, less stiff feeling and JHS wins for me. Never buying into the KOT either. I’m pretty well set up since I’m a pedal addict and have more than enough. It’s an addiction and I think I have control finally.

I have a Protein and Duelist. The BB sides are similar with the Duelist having more gain on tap and a more versatile EQ, but pretty similar or at least a lot of overlap. If you didn't know which was which you wouldn't be able to pick em out in a mix. The ODR side of the Protein and the TS side of the duelist are similar gain ranges, but I seem to prefer the ODR to the TS. The Duelist in general is a higher gain pedal with more crunch on tap and more tweak options. The ODR to me has more of a voxey mid hump, whereas the TS side of the duelist sounds like a TS. The internal Duelist dip switches are useful and you can tweak the pedal quite a bit. For me the protein seems to be the winner for now but both are quite usable and no one seems to make BlueDriver/ODR dual overdrive.

They both sound great though they are different beasts. I watched this on my phone and then again with headphones to be sure. Through mobile phone speakers, I tended to agree that for your style of playing through this particular set-up, the BA sounded more appropriate. That said, on headphones, there was way more going on. The BA is a lot cleaner while the DB has more 3d harmonic stuff going on in "green" side and that is because of the mid push vs scoop. I am often inclined to a scooped sound as it is always flattering to the ears but in the context of a mix or a guitar filling out space in a 3-piece band, the DB makes more sense. Of course, your speaker type will change all of that too so there's that. There is more character in the DB for better or worse, depending on context. In the end, I preferred your playing through the DB for the richer 3d tones. The BA was still great but sounds a little more flat or, missing something, in a mix context. I bought a DB recently and waiting for it arrive, mostly on the grounds of wanting a Morning Glory but with more options. I feel I can probably get the scooped BA sounds from my amps and my BYOC Crown Jewel, which can mimic practically everything if dialed in right. Thanks for the great demo!

Looking for more of a low mix and still pretty transparent drive even when the drive knob is high. Which is what exactly the Protein gives off. I've owned both. Both solid pedals. I'd say the V3 Double Barrel had a better Tubescreamer IMO vs the V4. Either way, I've compared both the V3 & V4 against the Protein and found the clarity of the Protein to set it apart from the DB. The BB style drives were similar enough that I'd be happy with either, but the green sides are where I found the Protein pulled away. That being said, the DB with a Red Remote switch attached is more versatile. Both great pedals, the Protein is the one I kept.
