Any semi auto or automatic firearm uses some of the expanding gas from the powder explosion of the cartridge in the barrel to push the bolt back as the round goes down the barrel. For example most assault rifles have a gas port near the front of the barrel which sends expanding gas back down the rifle to push the bolt assembly back, which grabs the side of the expended case and throws it against the ejector ramp or whatever it's called making it fly out and then the spring pushes the bolt forward grabbing a new cartridge from the mag and chambering it ready to fire again.
