Even though the world has moved on to more efficient ways of moving dirt, there is something magical about watching one of those old shovels do their thing. Thanks for keeping them alive.

I’m glad that there are other people out there like you that are willing to save these old machines from the scrap pile and keep them in working condition. They aren’t practical for actual job sites anymore like the new excavation machines are but they still have a lot of life in them.

My friends uncle ran a D9 back in the late 70’s , my teen years, and we would go out when he was on night shift and get in with him. That’s back when stripping coal was a big deal in Western Pennsylvania. His dad ran a Manitowoc drag line, he later became his dad’s oiler and I went trucking.

That is about what I made starting roofing. Then I went piece work, paid by the square, and more than doubled it. Sometimes triple. That was good money though with the price of things back then. Also with the tax tables, you did not owe any federal taxes on that even if you worked every day of the year. People forget how the workers could have a whole family on one paycheck.

My Dad has 2 Unit 614's...one with a trench hoe (that's what Unit called them...a pull shovel) and once with a dipper stick. I did learn how to use the trench hoe a little bit but always wanted him to teach me how to run the dipper stick. Sadly we were always busy and by that time a rubber tired backhoe was more efficient loading trucks...so he told me he taught me how to run the only shovel I'd need and handed me a hand shovel and said...it's a hickory boom with a knee crowd...LOL
