Hey there, friends and neighbors! In this video, I've got a fun (but challenging) lesson for beginners all about the Pentatonic Scale. There are tons of bass videos on this topic, but I'm going to show you one shape that will sound great on major AND minor harmonies. I hope you dig it!
LET'S TAKE IT TO THE BASS!

I’ve been playing bass for almost two years without knowing any music theory. After watching this tutorial, I felt the excitement that I felt back when I first picked up the instrument. Finally, theory is starting to CLICK! Can’t wait to binge-watch the rest of these beginner videos. You, sir, are an excellent teacher! Patient and clear.

Hello Mr B, your genius is not knowing the theory but in your ability to make it blindingly obvious what the students need to do 😁 Really cool mate and I'm thumbing through your other vids 👍

I've been playing guitar for about seven years and just recently started playing bass. I'm taking lessons with my guitar teacher and he encourages me to check out tutorials on KZbin. Most I found the person giving the lesson or advice goes waaaay too fast. I like the way you slow things down and make it easier to understand how to move around the fret board. I understand the pentatonic scale with guitar and through your tutorial I see how easy and effective it is for bass. Thanks for a great video and God Bless.

Hi Rich. I'm not a beginner myself (I've been playing for over 50 years), but I watch as many bass videos as I can. What I wanted to say, is that you have a superb style of teaching mate. I see many teaching videos where I think that beginners would have trouble following, but yours are logical, patient and interesting. Nice one!

Your "rant" was not a rant at all, but a beautifully stated explanation. As for the lesson, I loved it! I am truly a beginner with experience. I taught myself guitar in junior high school. I played tenor sax in high school band. I picked up a base in a church years ago because they did not have a base player. Again, self taught, off of what I knew from other stuff. Funny story. The associate pastor (sound board guy) handed me a tape to listen to. He hit play. After two or three measures, I told him to stop it. "I get it." He smiled. Talk about the busiest bass in the west! I slowed it down immediately. Amazing how simply hearing your BEGINNER self for a second or two is more than enough. LOL I am taking the time now to really learn it all from scratch. The ideas of music theory are not over my head, but I never understood how to really "work" with any of it. I love the way you teach.

Self taught with a bit of knowledge but stuck ?well these patterns take you up another step ,showing that 1 finger per fret in exercise is great, alternative ways of playing scales is also vital and this is a real learning process not only for beginners but self taught guys like myself who missed a few steps while learning .guys like you and J.Stinnet give you great fundamentals while moving over fretboard.❤❤

I've been playing too dang long to be considered a beginner, but I got a lot out of this anyway. Hi Dr Brown, I will be totally honest with you here, right now I am a one man band playing to backing tracks, I have been playing fender strat and tele and acoustic Takamine all my life, rhythm mostly, during Lockdown I decided to pick up the bass guitar, and it Litteraly drove me demented at how strange it felt in my hands, but after watching a few KZbin videos, I play a lot of country and have been looking up videos mostly just showing this 1 4 5 chord sequence, I spent a whole week at this and last weekend I built up the courage to try this out in my live shows, so for the first hour there I was on stage playing bass 1 4 5 to my simple 3 chord country songs, sounded great I could really feel the bass in the room, but that was it , a lot of the teachings on youtube are thought starting on C root note and easy to then to play the 1 4 5, but then when a song is in A I'm lost, well I'm not as its just put your finger on the E string 5th fret play take it off play it open, but my god that can get so boring, yes it works but I guess it's a start to getting the feel of the bass and especially in front of a crowd I said what if there is actually a bass guitar player in the crowd watching me, so I put the bass back up on its stand and reverted back to my takamine and tele, But in that hour I had my bass in hand, it felt good, so I'm back on youtube now and I landed here on your channel and have watched this clip a few times and I know again it's C chord but it's how you explain moving it all up along the fretboard, you break it down and explain everything so clearly, some tutorials you can't even see what they are doing on the fretboard, it's all so just too rushed into, Scott Grove is where I started with this 1 4 5 Chord sequence and like I said it worked, but can get so boring, coming on here I have learned a lot already only to get it down and put into practice, I think you just made the bass more exciting for me to learn and to play, you have just gained a new subscriber here, sorry for going on here and boring everyone, just wanted to paint a picture of where I am with the bass guitar right now, stuck on just the 1, 4, 5, maybe I'm just too old at 55 to start learning the bass guitar 🤔😊
