Beginner here. I am 71 years old and have never played any kind of instrument but have just purchased a Fender MIM Jazz Base and a Fender Rumble 100 amp. Everything feels so strange to me right now and I know it will for a while. I will be doing this lesson until I can honestly say that I am comfortable doing it, then move to less #2. I wanted to learn bass; so, in 1985 I also bought a Peavey T40 from a pawn shop for $150; complete with the chainsaw case. I never actually learned to play it, 'cause I never put in the time. I hung on to it until 1998, then sold it at another pawn shop for $200. I'm STILL kicking myself every time I go to EBay, and see how much they sell for. I didn't like it 'cause it was too damn heavy.

As a beginner player, i've come to realize I tend to pull strings too strong, reducing agility. My two cents for beginners like me is : don't play strong, instead turn up the volume and play soft but agile.

Rich, I started playing bass in an original rock band by default because we had three guitar players and I was the least proficient. I only played rhythm guitar. I was unfamiliar with bass and had no idea of the purpose of bass or how it should be played as part of rhythm section and drum lock in. As I studied simultaneously with writing our songs, I slowly picked up the whys and wherefores of bass. I did take professional lessons from a Berklee graduate who knew what I was doing and said I should stop the sheet music, standard notation reading and just get proficient on my skills. He would sit there and write the sheet music for my original demos (right as I sat there!) and then query me on how I would approach my bass lines. He was a great teacher. He always reassured me. Your craft is of equal importance and I’m sure to follow you.

So glad you mentioned the thumb placement of the right hand, my first instructor insisted on me using the floating thumb. Anchoring my thumb on the pickup feels way more natural for me and could play a lot faster.

Perfect example: near the end of this video, I was gearing up to make a comment like "yeah, but what about the finger position relative to the fret?" And then you proceed to answer it perfectly. On guitar, I usually try to play lightly about midway between frets and it works fine to avoid excess force too far back or risk of muting too far forward. On bass, I found myself needing to be almost right on the fret, just as you describe. So it's great to get validation that this is something you advise as a pro!
