I have gone back to the beginning of you series and have been overwhelmed with the OVER THE TOP quality you have put into every project. I have made it a point to disclose your series on other sailing videos .... Your site should have easily over 200k subscribers... but like others who follow you, I think you will be invited to design boats for some boat firm. While on the majority of the current in-fashion sites, the videos are sped up through the project process ...leaving the viewer to see before and after in a flsh. I for one...Thank you so much for all that you have taught me.

Just a suggestion. Those diesel tanks will be heavier than you think once they are full. That's a lot of stress on those three bolts you are using to support them with. You might want to block under them for support or strap up to the cross beam just above them.
@OnboardLifestyle6 жыл бұрын
I thought that same thought when I installed them. I am going to fill them, if needed, add a 1" nylon strap to secure them...stay out of my mind!

@@OnboardLifestyle Hey. Great minds think alike. :) I'm more concerned that underway with all the pitching and rolling that weight will be thrown in odd directions all the time. Not just the constant downward pull of gravity. The metal of the bolts can fracture under those conditions long before they would wear out normally. Fair winds.

Excellent timing. I was going to install a combined heater/stove system. But then looked at the price of the diesel heaters like the ones you are fitting. It is so much more cost effective to install a separate diesel heater unit. One unit will more than heat my boat and I have tons of room to fit it. I will be using your video as my 'how to' guide. I will be very interested to see how you route the exhausts. Great video as always.

Just a thought, you could put those day tanks in the Fed locker and just run a small line to the heaters. Then no diesel smell inside the boat. Later you could plumb from the main to the day tanks to keep the systems separate.
@tealgoben17816 жыл бұрын
I thought of that as well but the front locker is so difficult to get into. If I like these units I may mount a small permanent tank in that locker with a deck fill fitting.

So cool to see these diesel heaters in time again for the winter now that you made it thru the heat of summer and I agree a high wattage 110 ac unit was not and is not the answer even yet for you..so look into Clark and Emily's idea for a low wattage compressor or low running amp compressor exactly like the one he used . U can make everything right on your boat that you need with copper tubing and one off on switch per compressor and a little bit of wire. And one momentary type switch to be used for the start winding to be momentarily energized for a second or two to help start the compressor motor and then it will start up and lt will always be on and running till you switch it off manually.... This is as simple as it gets... If the compressor requires a capacitor to start the compressor for the start windingfor momentary energization just wire it in series with whatever voltage the compressor runs with... So you will have only three wires essentially going each to the correct terminal of the compressor .. a neutral leg to the common designated terminal of compressor and one power leg to each of the two remaining terminals of the compressor which will be he run and start .the run designated terminal will always have power applied once you flip the switch for it while the other winding of the motor or start winding will have your momentary switch for it. You'll see the terminals are always marked ç-s_r for common start and run on the compressor itself.... you can use computer fans to move the air over the copper tubing used to form the coils for the condenser coil and the evaporator coil and either a capillary tube or expansion valve or a permanent orifice metering device to restrict the flow in between the two coils you formed. Cappillary tube being the Simplist and cheapest. The only thing else is an access valve to be soldered on to the low side or return side of the compressor for charging... Just look real close at his unit and you should be able to copy it very cheap and always be able to fix or make another on board anytime teal..... I remember there is a subby who said he was also a refrig tech .. you have all winter to work on it .. let him read my input and see what he might add ... I'm sure we could get you feeling a lot cooler for next summer on your way to Monaco or the south Pacific... .. cheers and cherrio

Hey Steve, if it starts smelling like diesel inside, Teal and I already have plan b to either connect it to our main fuel tanks or installed another tank forward with a deck fill. I love your videos. A well balanced crew for a well balanced boat. You can see the boat itself has become an outward manifestation of your collective intelligence, logic and rationality. I love the way the boat looks. Just as I really enjoy watching you all. Regarding the diesel heater. I have devoured viewing just about every video on KZbin dealing with these heaters. I must say I haven't used one myself yet but I have learned so much from listening to others with real life experience. Running on low for any extended period of time will cause a build up of soot internally in the heater. It is advisable to run them high for an hour every few days to burn off the soot. On the better being safe than sorry side of things you should have both carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide alarms in all living and sleeping areas. I would also consider both alarms in your heating machine closet. As an aside I was watching a couple of years ago a KZbin interview of a sailor who had a gas heater in his fully enclosed boat. It was like watching someone with early onset of Alzheimer's. He couldn't remember basic things as he was trying to hold a conversation. Beware please. Of course being aware doesn't mean being paranoid. Most people have no issues with using combustion heating in confined spaces. Mono and dio alarms are a must though. Kind regards.
@OnboardLifestyle6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts Chaya. It is an important topic for sure and I tend to be overly cautious and have installed alarms and will be installing fire suppression systems in all of the heating lockers and engine compartments.

I love your projects and your attention to detail. I am concerned about your latest project. PVC is extremely flammable and used as fuel in hybrid rocket engines. I worry the heat from your exhaust pipe would melt and ignite the board.
@OnboardLifestyle6 жыл бұрын
The exhaust is the most critical part of the install and I have done a fair amount of homework. Temperatures can reach 400-600 F directly out of the burner but lose intensity the further it travels down the pipe. Wood will burn at around 500 F but the PVC I used has a rating of 840 F. I wrapped heat insulation around the pipe to ease my mind. After I fire them up I will monitor the temperatures with an infrared thermometer and make adjustments if I need to. I do worry as well but am trying to take all of the necessary precautions to keep us safe.
@miken76296 жыл бұрын
@@OnboardLifestyle 840F is good. I was looking at PVC lumber from Lowes (brand Royal Moulding Limited) and their company says not to exceed 140-150 degrees and not to use it around dryer's. Where did you route the exhaust to? These units can produce carbon monoxide so the exhaust must be run so it can't get back inside the boat. The instructions I read say the burner intakes should also be routed outside with exhaust so they're at the same ambient air pressure as the exhaust. If the exhaust is in a area of higher pressure it won't draft properly and could leak C0 into the boat.

Those air heating units look like cheap Chinese knock outs of the German ‘Espar Ebespacher Airtonic D4’ (Diesel 12V or 24V) which run at about $1,130.00 on ebay per unit. The Espar Eberspacher are the best cab air heaters money can buy, even a little better than the also German made Webasto EVO 55 Air Top in my opinion. Anyway, those things need to be serviced just about every season due to carbon deposits when burning straight diesel. If you could run kerosene fuel instead of diesel, or a 50/50 mixture of diesel and kerosene than they’ll run perfect three or four seasons without the need of service. Service includes uninstalling the unit and taking it apart for cleaning the soot and replacing the burner. For that operation you need a service kit which contains the burner and the gaskets. I wouldn’t replace the glow plug with every service since those last for at least three seasons before they go bad, but a good soot cleaning and a new burner it’s definitely needed before the start of each winter season. Every few days you need to run the units at full settings for at least thirty minutes to bur some of the soot which gets deposited when the unit runs at idle. They tend to get lots of carbon deposits when running below half strength or at idle. Kerosene fuel would take care of the soot problem, but it’ll be hard to get it everywhere. Also you need to start those things and run them at full power for thirty minutes every two to three months to prevent corrosion build up in the aluminum alloy part of the burner, especially on the marine units. (Those air heaters are also used and very common on long distance commercial trucks equipped with sleeper cabs) The difference between the original German made cab air heaters and the knock outs is in quality of workmanship, quality of parts and in the noise levels when operational. The German made ones also go into a “sleeping mode” when the temperature reaches the thermostat settings while the knock outs run the fan at idle non stop till you shut the unit from the controls. Anyway, I think you made the right choice to go with the cheaper version because of the difference in price. With cheap ones you can keep a band new unit as a spare and just replace it when the fan motor goes bad. To replace the motor would cost you just about the same amount of money as a whole new unit.

Hi Teal & family. Are those new heaters Chinese, if so how did they work out??

Yes they are and they have been performing amazingly well. We just used them again this morning. No complaints.

Question. Where do you purchase your lumber? I am also doing a refit and find your videos helpful but I can't seem to find any VG Fir. Anywhere nor can I find any PVC lumber local. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Home Depot and Lowes both stock PVC dimensional stock and profiles. We live in the Pacific NW so most lumber yards in our area stock VG Fir.

@@OnboardLifestyle Okay thanks. Must be by location as my local Lowe's and Home depot stock no fir and only small trim for PVC.

Looks like a great project! I would be really tempted to run the units on a different oil than diesel. Perhaps peanut oil. That way the exhaust smells like french fries! ;-)

There are so many lame catamaran and boating videos. Yours are excellent if not the best.

We were able to get a used Esbar heater at a great price used just trying to source the rest of the aluminum ducting and duct y’s grate and exhaust pipe and exhaust thru haul through another vendor as esbar is ridiculous pricing? Also how would you join two pieces of the aluminum pipe to extend it? Love your videos!!! We sail in Georgian Bay Ontario

We also had to extend ours and when we purchased the exhaust extension kit, it came with a sleeve to insert inside. Glad to hear you were able to find a good price on the Esbar heater. Good luck on your install. We love ours. Keeps us toasty warm. 👍

LOL ! I hope you don't plan to live on a dock down here in Florida. It's December and it's 76 deg out side and this will only last about 1 1/2 months then we go back to 90 deg weather and 80 % humidity !

Just curious since you're headed to the tropics, is this mostly a short term solution?
@OnboardLifestyle5 жыл бұрын
Yes, we will be mostly in the tropics, but when we are in colder climates and offshore, it will be nice to keep the cabins heated.
