Today on Variant, we open our series on the new Hulk series by Donny Cates, where we see Bruce Banner, fresh off the events of the Immortal Hulk finale, has somehow transformed his mind so that he is controlling the hulk from within, like a starship. And where he's going, no one know!

While I did like this, I can't helpt but miss Ewing. Donny Cates his style is more bombastic while Ewing took a more existential and philosophical approach to the hulk. Going from one to the other gives a bit of whiplash haha

banner and hulk have something of an extreme multi-personality to mental beings inhabiting one body and whoever was in control was the form the body took it was the same for Joe Fixit and some of the other hulk personalities over the years but now this comic is suggesting Banner somehow took control of everything

This brings up two issues (maybe three) I have with "today's comics". I started reading comics in the late 60's, and one of the titles I followed was "The Hulk". To me it was a fascinating story about a man whose strength would increase while his mind physically reverted to the brain of an adolescent. That's right, the Hulk was Bruce Banner, only his brain changed during transformation. I appreciate the various Hulk identities, but feel we lost something when Hulk started to be different creatures. (That's one nit-pick.) The other thing is I hate when characters with decades of heroic choices and actions, suddenly seem to be actively less good. (Green Lantern.) And the whole idea of Hulk protecting us from Banner just feels wrong, I think. The third thing, that I been aware, and frustrated with is how Characters with decades of history don't grow. Please pardon my soap box. As always, thank you so very much for the video.

I agree with you. Comic characters don't really grow or grow extremely slowly. The most frustrating thing for me about this is take is that Bruce should know this wouldn't end well for him when the hulk gets loose. From experience he should know what this kind of torture feels like and that he would choose to do it if he really wanted to be left alone, there's a door that can take him literally anywhere in the known or unknown galaxy.

It's a odd shift to Bruce being a villain and yet again being pitted against other heroes which I hate that this keeps getting repeated smh.

Wow! This is a lot to digest. First off Banner is now in control of the Hulk. Which leads to what's gotta be one of the coolest Hulk lines ever, "I'm not controlled by my rage anymore, I'm fueled by it". And secondly, Tony now has a Celestial grade suit. For some reason Hulk is becoming like Mazinger Z, the original mecha created by Go Nagai back in 1972. "Mazinger" means "Devil God Me", the theme of the story is "with great power, do you choose to become Devil or God, which is what The One Above All asked Bruce back in Immortal Hulk, and now Bruce is literally piloting Hulk like a mecha.
