Bruce Dickinson is very level headed. He knows the first two albums were successful and when he came into maiden they were headliners. What would they do repeat songs From the number of the beast for that tour where they would have to play for 90 minutes ? I briefly met Bruce Dickinson outside my local hockey arena during the power slave tour and he was a very down to earth engaging person asking where the sports fishing places were in our area

I think, the fact that they had a mascot like Eddie, made them more popular along with their music. I remember my friends and I wondering what their next album was going to look like. We would always look for the artists signature/symbol(Derek Riggs), on the album cover like it was, "Where's Waldo?" LOL I always loved to draw the Iron Maiden album cover art. I still like the Di’anno stuff better. Yeah, Dickinson is a more accomplished singer. But Di’annos grittiness suited Maidens early sound to a Tee. Plus, I grew up with Maiden and their early stuff. I stuck around for number of the beast and piece of mind. Power slave was good too. But by then, I was already knee deep in the burgeoning thrash scene. But Maiden definitely opened the doors to what was to become. Iconic band.

I think my favorite Maiden albums are Piece Of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere In Time, and Seventh Son. I think Brave New World is a standout later album. The first bunch of albums were all great. Live After Death was a great live set.

Maybe you disagree, but I did not like Piece of mind, but the tour, World piece tour, amazing, specially in Dortmund ´83, when they "killed" Eddie. Saw Maiden two more times, No prayer on the road 1990 and on the Fear of the dark tour ´92. When Dickinson left, I lost interest, he was The Man, still is.

@@CM-dw3gh If you are referring to Maiden England, NEC, november ´88, yes that show (from both shows, really), is available on both DVD and on CD, have them both, full show, almost two hours. The DVD has got a lot of extra material, can recommend it, because on VHS, it was only 90 minutes, the DVD is almost 2 hours (I believe, 110 minutes, to be exact). Check that out, if you like Maiden, amazing show that tour.

Paul was getting better, too. Battlezone and Killers demonstrate that he could have nailed Number of the Beast if they just gave him a chance. If you listen to Omen, Stormwitch, early Exciter and Manila Road, many second wave bands were influenced by Paul's style.

Thank you for that upload, i am a great fan of paul dianno, i met him in the flesh at the end of 1999 in tel-aviv, i was spending with him for some 20 minutes, he was very polite, so for me to see all those photos with paul dianno when he was young and fronting the iron maiden band is a big deal, i love bruce dickinson but for me the real iron maiden is the debut album and killers with paul dianno and clive burr, dennis stratton, who was replaced by adrian smith on the second album and dave murray, paul dianno was a great vocalist and was also a great frontman on stage, paul dianno was phenomenal, thanks.

I have no problem with Shirley, although the new one does sound a bit rough. That said, I would love to hear Maiden work with Cameron Webb, who did the last 6 Motorhead albums. They could apparently be pretty intimidating to work with, but he pushed them to do better in the studio and it really showed, especially on Inferno.

To be honest I think they have covered all the Blaze period songs that translate well live. It's sometimes forgotten that many of the songs from that period are just poor songs and not because Blaze sang them. The monstrosity that is The Angel and the Gambler is down to Steve.

i seem to recall seeing the paul di'anno band live at the town pump in vancouver in 1990-91, thereabouts. i assume it was a good show, i sorta remember i hurt like a motherfucker the next day, and that usually meant i enjoyed myself. i was a walking toxic chemical site in the early 90s, so if i "remember" it, it usually means i'm relating what someone else told me what they saw me doing.

Bruce is mistaken here....Maiden were special guests to Samson only in 1980 so he couldn’t have seen them play Murders in the rue morgue....An early version of Killers maybe but not Murders.

New album: I think there is too much calm work in the songs, too many times the songs start and end in a slow rhythm. Some people here thinks that Di'Anno was the best singer in Maiden. But he wasn't. Bruce Dickinson is the best singer. I know that Di'Anno was in Maiden, when they started getting bigger. But they truly exploded and became legendary, after Bruce joined the band. That's something Di'Anno could never have pulled off. Di'Anno would honestly have ruined Maiden and dragged them down with him. I'm so glad Di'Anno was fired and Bruce joined them instead.

Shirley is a yes man. Garbage producer and Harris shouldn’t be let anywhere near the console because his co-production skills are non-existent. Martin Birch demanded the best from Maiden and his albums show that. However many takes to get the result, none of this ‘record as live’ crap that they’ve been doing for the last 20 years.

@hexed33 He’s woeful. All the producers out there and they went for him. Unbelievable. They have three guitarists yet they all get lost in the mix. I know Martin Birch retired and has now sadly gone (RIP) but if he had still been producing the albums, they would have been infinitely better. Think if his production had been on the Blaze albums - Birch would have demanded multiple takes to get the vocals 100% and most likely have put in loads of harmonies too, to open up the songs. Same with the weak guitar sound. I think the best album post 2000 is Dance of Death, I would give anything to hear that produced by Birch.

@hexed33 Definitely - Seventh Son is fantastically produced. Although not my favourite Maiden album, I love the production on Fear Of The Dark too - perfect. Roy Z would have been a great choice - especially as he was known to the band through Dickinson. Hell, Dickinson got his mate Gers the Maiden gig so I’m sure Roy could have got in through being Bruce’s pal too. Having said that, I’ve just listened to the Dance Of Death album and I think the production on it is pretty good! Gates Of Tomorrow and New Frontier especially sound like classic 80s Maiden to me.

Martin Birch with Maiden was like Bob Rock with Metallica. But I have to admit that BNW is one of the best sounding Maiden albums ever, and it's produced by the Caveman.
