Yep,,, 1974 is when ETD was released,with" fist of fury" being shown earlier that year in Scotland. Bruce was pretty much unknown in Europe until 74. But man,did he come to Europe in a blaze of glory. I've said it before, it was the wow factor for me , a born again moment when I seen Bruce Lee in Fist of Fury. I was totally blown away.My friends and I went to see it in Edinburgh back 74, but I didn't know Bruce had passed away the year before,until my buddy steve told me so,as we left the cinema.. It was a case of elation,to disappointment all in one night. Bruce took action cinema to dizzier height's. An instant legend,and legend he will remain,and a fan I will always remain. As I subscribed to my "Kung Fu monthly," It wasn't long before I took up martial arts ,with boxing coming in the eighties.Yet another great video Charles. All the from Bonnie Scotland.

@Mrwrangler1962 it was actually just outside Edinburgh. A place called Dalkeith,and the cinema theatre was called the playhouse. It's a bingo hall now. But in Edinburgh,my two favourite cinema theatres ( when I even younger,) were "the Salon" near the top Leith st, and down Broughton Street,was "The ABC Ritz." Sadly,both long gone.

a real English story from a great and down-to-earth person finally I got to hear his voice,,,, RICK BAKER ,,,,, I still love to hear the stories about western cinema and eastern cinema and the aka titles that were released back in those days,I remember hearing stories about the people in the UK got to see uncut titles that were censored here in the united states,,, you guys saw things that we people in the west didn't see I always was jealous of people in the UK lol,,,,,,,, the books the magazines that come out of the Europe, in general, are more authentic even the video system PAL and NTSC, I prefer PAL over NTSC because it was always a stronger picture than in the west, today everything is digital 4k,,,,, great interview guys

This interview sure does take me back! I discovered Bruce several years after you guys did, around 1980, but I had similar experiences. i remember walking what seemed like 5 miles to a theater (I was living with my family at Clark AFB in the P.I. at the time) hoping to watch Enter The Dragon only to be turned away by the lady in the ticket booth: I practically begged, too, told her I'd already seen the movie with my older brother, there was nothing in the movie that was going to damage my youthful mind, but she wasn't having it, so I had to turn around & walk that 5 miles (probably more like 1, but it felt like 5!) back home! Then around the same time (also at Clark AFB) my first martial arts teacher introduced me to the movies of Jackie Chan (he had actually met & hung out with Jackie in Hong Kong, back when Jackie was looking for "foreigners" to fight in his movies), & , after I moved back to The States, I spent the next 10 years practically forcing friends & family to watch any Jackie movies I could manage to get my hands on (when they were selling on poor quality VHS for $35 bucks or so), years before Jackie had his international breakthrough with Rumble In The Bronx. Times sure have changed, nowadays we can easily find almost any of those classic Hong Kong movies in excellent quality on blu-ray, but there was something to be said for having to hunt for them in Chinese grocery stores & through not always trustworthy sellers through the mail, I think I appreciated those VHS tapes more because they weren't available everywhere, like they are now. Ah, the good old days! :)

Enjoyed the video content, you're a very good host. I was watching and looking up info early this morning on Shannon Lee's (executive producer) biopic. I think it's coming out next year of Bruce Lee. Very interesting, Mason Lee trained for 5 years to play Bruce. It will center around ETD time period. Also, ETD is being rebooted, sadly. Thanks for posting this, Charles. I totally relate to Ricks story ! i was to attempting to get in at that age ! 14 years old at the time i di dmanage to get in ,flea pit ! ha ha ha we had one of those and yes i got in the flea pit ! i actually stayed in there all day to watch both showings came out buzzing ! when i was 15 i had mde my own nunchuka and used to slip them up my sleave and go to watch fist of fury etcc . then on the way home walking through empty back streets get them out and practice . thanks for bringing so many memories for me .

I liked your interview with Rick Baker, very good. There are some Lee Siu Lung magazines that shows him sparring with some Shaw brother actors. I remember that scene where they are leaving that harbor to go to Han's island; that area is Aberdeen harbor. Be water sensei Charles san.

James, a lot of the problems back in those days was down to James Firman who was the president of the board of censors. Pam Hadden of the Bruce Lee society rallied us all to right in and complain. At the time you could only buy a cut version of Way of the Dragon for £50. That was nearly a whole weeks wages for me back then. I still have the letters the the BBFC sent to me with some lousy excuse for cutting all the nunchuks scenes. Still we got to see them in the end and it was worth the wait.

I remember Rick from the late 1980s when he organised the Kung Ku movies shown at the Scala cinema at Kings Cross in London. He was also there when I went to the Cynthia Rothrock seminar and they showed her films at the cinema the next day. Rick walked down the aisles throwing whistles to everyone to blow on during the fight scenes. We drowned out the noise from the underground station next door. He looked exactly the same but his hair and beard was slightly darker back then.😀

Wow. I bought the Chinese uncut "Way of the Dragon" VHS back in the day from the "Jackie Chan fan club". Around the same time (1990-1992?) possibly arranged by the Jackie Chan fan club, I went to a cinema somewhere in King's Cross (London) to see a triple bill of Mad Monkey Kung Fu, Fist of Fury (Chinese Connection) & Force: Five (Joe Lewis). People were blowing whistles when the fights were on. You coudn't see nunchucks on film in England, only read about them in Bey Logan's Combat Magazine so to see Bruce Lee using nunchucks was a unique experience. I got a "Fist of Fury" bootleg signed by Bob Baker at the London convention in 1990. Don't have it now unfortunately.

Devane. I was there as well. The cinema was called the Scala and was next to the underground because you could hear the trains going by. The triple bill was awesome and everyone cheered went Benny the Jet was on. They also showed four of Cynthia Rothrock's films there the day after her seminar. Rick threw whistles to everyone to blow on during the fights. The first film was Blonde Fury which Cynthia said she had not seen the whole film before. When she was sitting in the bath, the sound of the whistles was deafening. Great fun.😁👍

I remember someone blowing their whistle for the dancing lady in Fist of Fury and everytime a lady appeared on screen in Force : Five, and everyone was laughing. I do remember seeing an ad for another event sometime later saying "Remember don't forget your whistle!" so I figured it was a thing. Cynthia Rothrock? Don't remember that but I probably couldn't go for some reason . A pity.

@@DevaneDevane The Cynthia Rothrock seminar was in 1989. As far as I can remember the triple bill was late 1991. It was the first (and only time) I have seen Bruce on the big screen. Because I had only watched Fist of Fury on video, a lot of the picture was reduced due to framing. So I never realised that Bruce picked up the nunchuks from his own jacket until then. And when he fights the fat sensai with the sword in the dojo. He is still avoiding the bodies of the other students he has just laid out. Making it even more impressive.

@@jwfloating-world 1989! I would have missed that. I think the Triple bill with Fist of Fury might be 1990. I was at the Tracking the Dragon Convention (Bob Baker, John Saxon) on 1st December 1990. I bought the uncut Chinese version VHS of Fist of Fury that day. My memory tells me the Scala was my first time seeing it, so it's before that but around the same time, though I can't be 100% sure. Yeah it was the only time I saw Bruce Lee on the big screen. I would have thought The Prince Charles Cinema or the Odeon Marble Arch might have screened a marathon but they could only show BBFC versions I presume. The Pan and scan framing really ruined those films but the censoring was worse. I was very thankful for the bootlegs at the time.

Great interview! Nice to hear his experiences as a fan of Bruce Lee! I had similar experiences with the new wave of Kung Fu films in the late 80's - went to Chinatown video stores to find VHS of Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Tsui Hark and many others - Bruce Lee started it all for me of course!

It was always a fun adventure hunting for the latest Jackie, Sammo, & Yuen Biao movies on VHS in my local Chinese grocery stores, taught me to be open to foreign/sub-titled movies in general, opened my eyes to the value of cinema from around the world, not just the stuff Hollywood studios were putting out.
