The people who say, "Bruce was just an actor" are ignorant. I spent a long time researching "If Bruce Lee Could Really Fight?" Well one of many questions that arise are, Why did Joe Lewis and several other Karate fighters study under Bruce Lee if he couldn't fight himself. Secondly i read many accounts where eye witnesses say Bruce got into several street fights in America and he won them all. One for example was two dude racially abused Lee. Lee told them if they wanted some they could get it. Bruce kicked the dude in the knee and had him on the floor in control. The othet dude ran away and Bruces acquaintance told him its not worth it. So Bruce showed pity on that dude. There are many many accounts like this. Lastly Jim Kelly who was also a Karate Champion stated Bruce Lee was "untouchable". He sparred Norris Lewis and many other Karate fighters and schooled them. Jim Kelly alo said they wont admit it but Bruce did destroy them. Lastly Bruce didn't partake in anything like Karate tournaments since he wasnt a point scoring fighter. Bruce was the type of guy who used eye gouges in street fights. His moto was "Anything goes"

Bruce Lee in the modern era, with all the advantages that other modern era fighters have, would be unbeatable. You've compared him to athletes (UFC fighters, only) who have loads of resources at their disposal, from video of opponents, and rule sets, to teams of coaches and nutritionists, and so on.... Bruce Lee was an actor. That's how he made his money and built his platform. McGregor is also an actor. But Lee also trained to do REAL damage in fighting - he wasn't just a groomed athlete made to play nice and wear reebok. You did a fair job on your video, but all things being equal: my money's on Bruce Lee - even on Sundays.

As you have said, Bruce Lee was way ahead of his time, what makes you think that he would stay in the “style” that he had back in the day? He would be with the times and continue to invent new ways to beat opponents in the fastest way possible. Bruce Lee was a icon and father of MMA who died way too early. He had so much knowledge and untapped potential to offer the world of martial arts. Adaptation was his strategy and his motto “having no way as way and having no limitation as limitation”. +Peter Serna Writing it in that book is different than actually being exceptional at it. I think he knows how to use those techniques, but how effectively in live action? He also wrote down the tactic of "touch and go" or simply a punch, change levels, to a double leg. So does this mean he can shoot and time a takedown like GSP? Maybe but you need some proof for that. "He's not an athlete" is an argument a lot of people make for him not competing in sport.

It's an example of being exceptional at it to be able to conceptualize it in a way others can learn. Especially when you're explaining a subject that hasn't been explore. Obviously he was able to write about it cause he embodied it. So have you read it?

Hypotheticals are fun! This is a fair analysis thank you for uploading. Compared to today's fighters, one unique aspect of his repertoire I think that would make him a top UFC fighter... but is harder to measure is his creative intelligence. His rapid ability to gather-learn-test-evolve. With very few resources Bruce was able to rapidly learn, then mix new global forms, whilst filtering out superfluous unpractical movements, to finally create Jeet Kun Do. Just as his 1970s J.K.D style is a mixture of lopsao, silat, fencing, wing chun, boxing etc (completely original at that time); if the young Bruce Lee were alive and dropped into 2018 he would most likely learn, then creatively adapt a completely new hybrid 2018 style of fighting, such as a JKD.2 tweaked for Octagon. Adaptive intelligence and dedication would be hard to beat!

One thing I noticed about Bruce Lee is his absolute gift of fast-twitch ability and timing. His opponent would start to throw a jab, and Bruce could launch a kick to the head, make contact, AND get back in his stance BEFORE the dude could retract his punch. That's FAST. The other thing I noticed was he was always "measuring" distance-kind of like what Royce did-by extending his right hand out. I feel that Lee would have been very competitive in mma because of his speed, power, and work ethic combined with his demonstrated desire to continually evolve his fighting skills. Bruce was a champion boxer before he even started studying wing chun. And the only reason he started wing chun was because he wanted to be a better street fighter. So he definitely proved his skills in life-death situations. For him, fighting in the ring wasn’t a true test of skill, the true test was whether he could end a street fight quickly.

Bruce Lee was the Jimi Hendrix of mma. Yeah there are fighters who trained harder in various areas since, just like there are guitarists who are faster and play more complexly than Hendrix. But you need to take the times and there influence into account when rating them. Hendrix created the guitar playbook that people learn from to this day. Lee was the first MAJOR example of a fighter taking bits and pieces from multiple martial arts to create a new, unpredictable technique. That is why Bruce Lee is so highly regarded. He wrote the book on how multiple martial arts could be applied in a way to devastate your opponent quickly and efficiently. In his day, no one could touch him, and to scale him to modern day, he would be one of the best in the MMA scene.

As I do appreciate your thinking and detail here are some facts you just are missing.the Martial Arts for Bruce was a way of life a Philosophy hence the founder of his teachings, not just for self defense and movies . Bruce would not have ever compete in the MMA or any other competition because he did not believe in fighting for Points he did not like that kind of exhibition, And a belt was for holding up your pants not your rank. He was equal whether he used his Left/ Right, Hands or Feet. He was lightning quick with Tremendous Power and always incredible Balance. The other point you made that the Evolution of Mixed martial arts would put Bruce at a disadvantage. No way Bruce was Only 32 and his mind flowed like a River constantly evolving to be as efficient yet simple as possible ending a confrontation quickly. Another thing he had absolutely no Fear of his opponent he would exploit weakness. For those who made comments he was just some actor it is sad you do not know who he truly was, He was the definition of a Lethal Weapon not to mention an amazing human being that was well ahead of his time and yet that time was cut way way too short. There will never be another

I think this is a bad analysis, I see ground game effecting him in the UFC. As for striking he would have been ahead in striking easily. Weasle you talking about his footwork is not comparable to other UFC fighters. Is simply not enough to say he would lose at striking. There's way more to striking than just footwork. As for the feints to Bruce's intercept, that's also not enough to say Bruce would lose at striking. As for the majority of other abilities I would see Bruce either being better at it or around the same level, except ground game. Also weasle your analysis is simply not deep enough enough. I'm just going to say what Conor mcgregor said "Bruce without a doubt would have been world champion".

TheWeasle TheWeasle fair enough, but that sparring video with his footwork, you still don't know if that's how he truly moved. And it's not like footwork now is that much different from older techniques. For example, Conor mcgregor's footwork is not as sophisticated as Dominick Cruz and tj, but he still outclasses great fighters. In fact Conor's footwork is similar to Bruce lees.

If BL was around now in his prime state, with all the access to martial art knowledge and information, many attributes to himself (weird paradox cause it wouldn't exist), he would study and develop into a superior fighter. If he was ahead of his time then, imagine now with the internet?? The moment he saw BJJ, Krav Maga, Muay Thai, or any other style be effective and/or necessary, I'm positive he would dedicate learning, then mixing it into his style if he'll felt it'll give him the edge... It's hard to argue for modern MMA, because MMA was influenced by him... there's a reason... his mindset was so ahead then, why wouldn't it be now??
@DROLETRON5 жыл бұрын
Don't judge bruce's abilities as inferior to the ufc fighters today by just watching his black and white sparring videos, for those are his wing chun days(no foot work) that wasn't his mma days. Bruce always preaches speed combo speed, blocking while throwing a combo follow up, and the feints to make opponents throw to counter them with speed. His footwork only came in his later years, in mma jeet kune do days. He can compete in ufc today and would still be on top, the only disadvantage is he's small.

Obviously as soon as he met Frankie Edgar he would look the same as our modern day Bruce Lee, Rodriguez did!!! The same thing Frankie did to Rodriguez would happen to Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee wasn’t even a real fighter, he was a practitioner. He would win in shadow kick boxing, not fighting.

@ChibiZone7 жыл бұрын
I think the ending when you mentioned his mental acuity was the answer. Bruce Lee wasn't the type to stick to one thing. He assimilated what worked. If he were still alive, he would most definitely learn from the bjj and Thai boxing masters and use it in his fighting. If you compared his fighting ability back then to now, it's obvious Lee would have been bodied easily by our current day fighters. But if you take into account Lee's attitude to martial arts, he would have put an effort to learn how to defend against takedowns, to read opponents. He was huge into philosophy and if you remember his popular water analogy, you know he would have adapted to the UFC of today.

Ok, so one key thing about Bruce Lee was his phenomenal speed and accuracy. Look at the footage. Who moves like that in MMA? No one that I've seen. So here's a few questions, just for discussion: Are any of those fighters so fast they have to slow down for a camera to catch the motion? Bruce was. Bruce wrote once that when you can kick a palm tree so that the tree is rocked, and you are not, you will understand a kick. If you see bruce hit things and people in his training, I believe it. Can anyone in MMA really hit or kick like that? Bruce was a master of footwork, one of the very fastest and most mobile fighters ever. Who has footwork and speed like that? Before answering in a hurry, really go and watch some of the raw training and demonstration footage, not just the movies. Then go watch the MMA greats. Conor is fast, Anderson Silva is fast, lots of them are fast. None of them are as fast as Bruce Lee. Not one MMA fighter who has existed. Sorry. It's an open question that we'll never really know the answer to, thus the endless speculation. It's my opinion that Bruce Lee in his prime (Enter the Dragon, Return of the Dragon, 1972-1973) was an unprecedented and unequaled fighter who could beat any man put in a ring with him, under any rules.

@The Weasle Hello, when you refer to the "history and evolution in Martial Arts", and that "since the first UFC in the 90's there has been the biggest evolution in Martial Arts", what is the timeframe that you refer to? There is an opposite view which considers that there is actually nothing new under the sun concerning martial arts, considering that Martial Art (in a broader sense) is the utilization of the body and weapons to conduct war, and this happens in human history for at least let's say roughly the last 5000 years. The evolution that is happening since the 90's is a pattern which has repeated itself multiple times in that timespan, martial arts' styles get mixed, separated, remixed again depending the needs of the era, the cultural context and so on... I believe a more orthodox approach is to rephrase as: "since the first UFC in the 90's there has been the biggest evolution in Martial Arts since World War 2, and even that could be under debate, considering that UFC/MMA is the best simulation of actual comabat, yet is actually under the category of combat sports.

He had a habit of immersing himself in techniques (like Ali's footwork, and judo) that he saw as effective. Since he was already, on his own, developing combinations of striking and takedowns, you can assume that he would have taken to BJJ/grappling quite readily.

Great analysis! With that being said, Bruce Lee would fuck Ngannou up.

+TheWeasle Hi, who was the best martial artist that Bruce Lee sparred with? Do you know much about one of his sparring partners, Joe Lewis?👍

dadondutta footwork based on mixed martial arts, if anyone you just named stepped in the octagon they would get taken down, leg kicked, head kicked, etc becuase they don't know how to use their footwork based on the different fighting styles.

dadondutta 1st we are talking about MMA 2nd The boxers have better footwork because they only have to worry about punches.An Mma fighter has to worry about takedowns legkicks and punches.So please get out of your superiority complex bubble.

dadondutta Maybe hes talkong about foorwork IN MMA. Ofcourse boxers tend to have better footwork. Boxers can perfect their punches and footwork because they dont have to worry about all the other aspects of fighting mma fighters have.. And i say that as a boxing fan.

Bruce Lee died before i was born but he is the reason i got interested in martial arts. I tried to copy his style, his kicks, his stance, his training, actually i studied jeet kune do and other books about him to learn his philosophy on life and fighting. I did learn a lot. He was like at least 3 times faster than anyone on the screen and i wanted to fight like him in my younger days. If anyone introduced me to martial arts and fighting then it has to be Bruce. It was not chuck or jackie but Bruce Lee. Having said that it is also true that i never saw him in a real fight against a top class competitor. I just know that he was very fast and very strong at the same time considering his size. He was like a pop icon, a person who could do things on the screen as a fighter which nobody else could do but it was on the screen. We dont even know if he has a good chin or how good his cardio is going to be while being hit. That we cannot neglect. I know that you are trying to cover all the bases and holes in this kind of comparison in a short video but we have to be honest. We dont really know how good he was. Stallone is not the best boxer in the world because he made some rocky movies. Bruce Lee was for me a martial artist who worked in movies and had a solid philosophy on fighting and life. It just doesnt make him the best fighter. It was not his job to compete with other top fighters. We never saw any of that and its also ok. Bruce will always be the person who had the most profound effect on me regarding martial arts but I will keep it at that. There is for me no need to speculate on how he would do in MMA today. We dont even know how he would have fared even in his time. He might have beaten all the top contenders of martial arts in the 60s and 70s but this is still speculation. He was a special and unique martial artist who worked in movies. That is how I remember him.

He would get dominated I respect Bruce but people seriously overrate him as a fighter making ridiculous and idiotic claims he's no where close to greatest fighter

Andrew Ortiz I agree, I think he’s an amazing martial artist but putting that into an actual mma fight would not of been easy.

Very true. Bruce was an important martial arts philosopher and influencer. And it's obvious that he was actually pretty skilled in martial arts. But as you said, he was nowhere near being the greatest fighter. Even back in his day, he wasn't. I honestly think he couldn't hold a candle to someone like Mas Oyama or Jack Dempsey in a match.
@andrewortiz64307 жыл бұрын
PARK what are you basing that on he has no pro fights, never competed, has no footage of actually fighting other than a pretty mediocre sparring session with a very very mediocre sparring partner and him looking extremely mediocre on the bag, you yourself have never seen Bruce in a fight yet claim he can beat real fighters or that skill is above any just stop
@jackaharts16 жыл бұрын
You forget one thing, Bruce Lee was always ahead of the game. If he was alive today he would have moves made to counter everything people threw at him. He also fought for real not games and he is so fast, for someone to stop him , I can’t believe it. He is like the Batman of martial arts, he studies and he improves it. That’s why he was ahead of the game then and how he be ahead of the game now.
@serenawilliamslovesbigwhit50297 жыл бұрын
Bruce Lee was just an actor who scammed the world into thinking he was a fighter. In no way would he survive a single round against pro MMA fighters. He is just an Asian version of Steven Seagal. TJ Dillashaw is a real Martial artist who is like a real life Ninja when he fights. TJ is what Bruce wishes he could’ve been.
