This is the song that awoke me in difficult times. I mirrored myself in the lyrics, it truly described how I felt and what I was going through in such a personal, clean and profound way. It made me feel understood, not alone, I used to listen to it before I had a test at university, before a great event, when I was feeling extra happy, when I needed a boost of strenght or when I was feeling like shit. It's mesmerizing to me how this tune can convey such different messages and talk to everyone. It still inspires me not to give up on anything. This song is truly magical and I think it will always be my favourite. Thanks Springsteen.

This resonates so deep within my soul. I'm a black man who loves old school r&b and rap music. But damn, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG. The lyrics talk about getting out of the rut you're in and going out to start living again. What a MASTERPIECE Bruce

Music is the most beautiful language that speaks beyond skin color and into our soul, our being. I legit love all genres of music, except like old white man blues- can't do it haha. androcles Sounds to me, after just now listening to this again, like a man who finds himself in a rut. He spots a lady, sitting there with a broken heart, so he says, come on, let's dance, take a chance at being the fire in each other's lives. It could happen, let's take a chance, even if all ends up being is dancing in the dark. Sounds like the average lonely hearts situation to me, for the twenty/thirty something singles scene. There's that big biological drive to find the one you will have a family with, you know, keep the species at a healthy number. Once you get older than that, you lose big drive to find a life mate, then it's more about finding quality people to fill your life with, friends and maybe a partner/soul mate.

I always felt the same way since first hearing this years ago. Music has a way of allowing for communication that is of a higher form than linguistics and this song is a prime example of that. The earnest desperation of life’s struggles and the angst and yearning that comes with it is greatly expressed here. The rhythmic beats, poetry, sounds have a way of expressing this far more accurately than words ever could. Sentences and speech we just a means to an end and a rather ineffective one at that. Music does it better. It’s a strong plea of desperation and also expresses the emptiness and void of “dancing in the dark” that can seem inescapable.

Crazy to think he wrote this song about losing inspiration for music "I'm sick of sitting here trying to write this song"...and how he needed to find it even if it meant "dancing in the dark". Sometimes you have to be pushed beyond your comfort zone to be launched into where you were meant to be.

Like someone wrote before. This song is bittersweet for me. My mother’s favorite Springsteen song. 12 years ago, she was sick in the hospital and I went out to run an errand. When I turned on the fm radio of my car this song started to play. It was a beautiful morning, the sky was sparkling blue with a nice breeze and a few clouds, but the moment I heard the song, I don’t know how but I just knew she had passed away. A few seconds later my brother called me to say that I needed to return to the hospital. He didn’t want to say why but I knew. RIP mom I love and miss you. And thanks for your wonderful music taste. 😘

The Boss was an absolute class act. He stayed true to his roots, a working man and never forgot it and he played hard rock for hard living people. Now I am 77 - same age as Bruce - and I watch these videos on YT and explain to my Thai wife in Thai what the Boss is singing and she relates. Music is universal and rock n roll music was revolutionary then and it is fabulous now.

@@MattRosemier1 He seems awfully cheerful to be singing about desperation. The song is amazing in composition and execution, but for me, the emoting doesn't fit. "want to change my clothes, my hair, my face" *smile*

David Schaefer or one could look it as a reflection of hisself, Bruce was forced to write a hit song for born to run and this was it, he has expressed his distraction over writing this song many times as he never wrote hits to make money he wrote songs for love of music. This song lyrically is him expressing his distaste for the music industry and how tiring and busy his life is. The music is a blatant contrast for this, one reason is because he had to make a more poppy song for the charts and the other is because he still has to put himself out there is as the energetic and fun Bruce we all love. Most people don’t look into the lyrics just see the fun part of the songs, the people that do see the actual meaning of the song
