After seeing and hearing an unfathomable amount Bruce shows (and making it a point to hear every version of this song I can find) this is my vote for his best performance of all time. You can see and hear everything about the man and his music by this clip. You can damn near feel the anger and desperation he is channeling to make it the performance that it is....and it's the most powerful thing I've ever heard.

That's awesome. You're spot on. Warren is my second favorite writer after Bruce so it's great to see someone else thinking along those lines. Just like you, from a personal stand point it gets to me more than any other. There's not a word or emotion that I don't identify with. I've wound up with a lot of inner demons and my actions because of those reasons, and the way I dealt with them, put me exactly in that darkness. Mainly because of drug use, the "I lost my money and I lost my wife" and "wanting things that can only be found" lines hit me most. He's the best there is at writing songs that, even if the experience is different, everyone can connect it to something in their life. Another reason I love the '78 performances of the song so much is the lyric change "You can drive all night and never make it around, through that Darkness..." I wish he would've kept that in.

+Blind Terry Tucci bruce is the greatest bro. Shit has helped me through some dark times. I'm 27 and I remember when I was 18 and first time I heard Thunder Road I started crying because I felt someone else understood how I felt throughout my teenage years. I'll never forget that in my life. I'd love nothing more than to see Bruce at a dive bar and just simply walk up, buy him a beer and say thank you. That's it. No pictures. Nothing. Just a thank you.

Best performance I've seen. Nothing better than a young artist going for broke, believing 100%.

This is in the top 5 of his best songs and the Darkness tour back in '78 was the best tour.... Winterland in Dec of '78 I think was the best concert....

Heard this song for the first time exactly 7 months earlier on the boardwalk during a band practice. The album wasn't out yet, and this was quite a departure from the first 3 albums... I'll never forget that day.

I was at one of the Boston shows in '78, 16 years old and leaning on the stage and freaking out...last week I was in Boston hearing this again..I was in tears! It was positively transforming, I was never the same after the first time, still the most amazing concert experiences ever, 35 years later

I remember when it came out. I was in high school and was just discovering music beyond pop. Not my favorite, but nonetheless incredible. He's an artist, songwriter, musician and not just some producer's puppet being told what to play. Good stuff.

Thank you for this so much. i first heard Bruce live in 1985 at St James Park - Newcastle and i I have just listened to this and it just confirms that Bruce is the best front man ever, and i mean ever and i listen to everything from Pantera to Madness and this bloke is the dogs bollocks for realism and true to life feeling. If i could have a pint with any star it would be with Bruce and just to say thank you for nearly 30 years of being great. Cheers Sime from the Toon (Newcastle Upon Tyne)

Springsteen's a monster in this. Good thing he never did drugs cause he looks like he's on acid when he's singing. But it's just because he ain't holdin' back, just givin' it all, vanity aside

You are a wonderful exception. And it is great to hear. Have you ever listen to Joy Division, The Cure, The Smiths or some other great 80's music? There is some great music today, but it does not seem to have much of a chance with too much junk getting attention. Cheers to you from Munich, Germany!

The author who wrote, "Springsteen acts like punk never happened," was wrong; that writer needs to see this, or listen to Tenth Avenue Freezeout. Both songs have punk spirit, [which is plainly apparent in this video as Bruce just rages through his vocal].
