I also share a Warren Zevon bond with my dad. "Tenderness on the Block" was my father-daughter song at my wedding (a surprise for him after we started to play "Wind Beneath My Wings", his most hated song!) Coincidentally, this particular performance in this video happened to be recorded the day after I was born!

I got to see Warren Zevon. I can even say I knew him when he was living in Philadelphia ("Nita in the Morning" days...) I can't say I was his friend. He was a huge fan of my dog and used go out of his way in Rittenhouse Square to say hello and pat him. A few years after that he played solo at the Chestnut Cabaret, was playing this very song (on the 12 string), stopped in the middle, look me right in the face and said: "Hey... Will you get me a beer?" I did.

Why is Warren Zevon so ignored, underrated, even unknown? To me he is probably the most inventive, versatile and creative musicians of my lifetime - an amazing songwriter and a brilliant performer. Who knows where he would have gone had he not died so tragically young? He was incapable of producing anything that was not original. Honour to his memory.

Have I told this story before? Saw Warren in Austin at Club Foot with my future ex-wife in 1982. Still have the ticket stub on my law office wall. Solo show. Saw him for the second time in Austin in 1989, after future ex and I had separated. Saw him for the last time in 1993 in Austin with our son, age 8, on my shoulders. Warren came back out to do an encore. We were 10 feet from the stage, outdoors venue, Liberty Lunch. "Daddy, Daddy, Daddy, can he play "Excited Boy"??!! Warren heard him, looked up from his guitar, grinned, and immediately launched into a roaring, soaring "Excitable Boy". That moment will live with me till the day I die. My son, now 30, and a big Zevon fan, won't forget it, either.

I'm turning 50 this month. For 40 plus years I've had many "favorite songs", but this one has had a lifelong consecutive run in my all-time top ten favorites. When my Atlanta Braves won the World Series back in '95', my best friend and I were both 21 at the time. We were wearing sunglasses to hide the red-eye hangover look, and we both had 24oz cold tall boy Miller Lites in our hands, and 24inx36in poster board signs folded in our laps up in the nose bleed section on a sweltering day in Atlanta just past the halfway mark of the MLB season in July of 1995. My buddy Kyle's sign read, "Hi Mom, I lost my job. Living on oatmeal, and washing clothes in the tub. Please send $." Mine, of course, read "I was gambling in Havana. I took a little risk. Send Lawyers, Guns, and Money. Dad, get me out of this." We appeared on the jumbotron screen during the 7th inning stretch and both stood up and unfolded our signs with our smiling heads beaming above the top of our art. The coolest thing was the next day when a few mutual friends of ours said that they saw us on TV at the Applebee's bar and they just yelled like we hit a grandslam hahaha. Hot girls we knew that worked the bar said that we were the coolest. 😎 😆 🤣 😂

Zevon once stated that this was based on a true story. He and his manager were partying in Mexico, when the "party" decided to take to the road and it looked liked it was "about to hit the fan." Zevon's manager feigned a phone call: "Send lawyers." Zevon jumped in: "And guns... and money." The part about hiding in Honduras might be referring to O Henry, the author. In 1894, he'd embezzled $5000 ($150k+ in today's dollars) from the bank he was working at and had fled to Honduras to avoid prosecution. He was eventually caught when he returned to Texas to be with his terminally ill wife.
