This is traditionally the song he introduces the band to the audience, which makes sense seeing how this song is basically written about the forming of the band.

During the Wrecking Ball tour, I think he introduced them during My City of Ruin. and In Barcelona, he did it during Mary's Place. So not always but often

Ok...I have so much to say about this; I even took notes so I wouldn't forget something. 😆 While it is labeled as 10th Avenue Freeze Out, there are pieces/parts of at least 3 other songs in there, so it could maybe be called a medley. During the "preachy" part, while he was using religious terms, I think it was more as symbolism than actually talking about religion. He often compares his concerts to a religious experience in that he does his damnedest to heal and inspire the audience for the 3-4 hours they are there. You can see his Catholic upbringing come through as well as his acknowledgement of the gospel elements of rock&roll. This song is also one he frequently plays at his concerts...as much a "standard" as any of Bruce's songbook, so I bet he wanted to change it up from previous iterations. As for the band intros and why this was also a part of this song...as someone else has mentioned, this song is the origin story of the E Street Band (Bruce = Scooter, The Big Man = Clarence). Also, the band had not played or toured together since 1989; this was their "reunion" tour. (Bruce dissolved the band and did solo stuff including winning an Oscar for Best Original Song, but I digress 🤣) A note on some of the kind of odd references that people might not catch: "...and star of The Sopranos tel-e-vision show..." Little Steven Van Zandt played Silvio on the acclaimed HBO drama. "...and star of late night tel-e-vision..." Max Weinberg was the band leader for Conan on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Both of these basically occurred during the band "hiatus." Patti Scialfa is Bruce's wife (hence the flirting 😄). The Hammond B3 and the piano are standard for the E Street Band. You mentioned he started out with crowd interaction then moved to band intros, but he actually went back to crowd interaction after the intros with the "10th, 10th" call&response after he introduced Clarence. Lastly (I think 😆)...watching this again got me so excited and made me miss Clarence at the same time. 😔

They have a role call every night which generally is consistent within each tour. This was part of the ten night MSG shows that ended their first tour in years. They had toured the world over and the band was as good as it ever has been. In the context of E Street fans, I saw the same version on that tour in Pittsburgh, and it was awesome beyond anything I'd ever experienced at any show ever. The concert was my first E Street show, and I was converted right there, right then, that night. The song is easy enough to get, a sorta fable-ish legend about Clarence joining and saving the band. I was in ATL at the first show on the first tour after C passed. And when they got to the line "The Change was Made Uptown, and the Big Man joined the Band," and they stopped playing, the lights came up with the cover of Born to Run with Bruce and Clarence standing back to back on the big screen...and Bruce just held the mic in the air...the crowd cheered louder and louder for what seemed like two minutes. It was one of the most emotional things I've ever seen or been a part of. Actually, probably THE most. The fans adore E Street, and Clarence is absolutely beloved.

The song, the interspersed songs (Take Me To The River), the preacher schtick, and band introductions are all related … it’s about community, achieving things together, and gaining purpose and redemption through others.
@dsorichetti1543 жыл бұрын
When a concert is 3+ hours long, you really don't worry about a 19 minute song. The song is also done at a point in the show where it allows for a bit of a break for the band to catch their breath.

The line “When the change got made up town and the big man joined the band” It’s a poignant part of the song in which he has held onto for years especially since his death. I feel it’s a great time to announce the band finishing with the master Clarence.

Awesome reaction! Thank you again for doing the full song. As I mentioned in a previous comment one of the many reasons you are my favorite reviewer is when you contacted me to ask about the length never once did you try to get me to switch to a shorter song or count it as 2 songs like some channels would. You simply said cool be on the lookout for it in July and once again you come through with a great reaction. Thank you. I can honestly say I've gotten everything I hoped for and more out of being a gold tier member. You're the best. Stay awesome

Probably something you've picked up on in the Bruce Springsteen & E Street Band videos you've reacted to: Bruce does A LOT of cues to the band throughout the show. I'd have to rewatch to see what the cue is for the Hip Thrust that you were laughing at, but it's probably just another of the I-don't-even-know-how-many different cues that the band has practiced over the years.

"Miss Holly!" was Steven van Zandt's assistant, Holly Cara Price, who was key to the creation of Underground Garage. Bruce did the hip thing on this tour, so it was planned. Seeing Holly in the audience and doing it for her, though, was spontaneous.

The reason that he introduces the band during this song is that the song is about the formation of the band plus by doing it in this way considering that each of his shows are almost 4 hours long it makes you really understand the connection and rule that everybody plays he introduces Clarence last because Clarence was his key member of the band which was the last person to join

DH, Tenth Ave is in the beach town of Belmar, NJ. The corner of Tenth Ave and E Street in Belmar is sacred ground as the naming site for The E Street Band. The Town has a nice memorial marking the location for Bruce Nation...

Been a Springsteen fan ever since I got his first single "Blinded By The Light" in 1973,and album "Greetings From Asbury Park NJ",and haven't looked back since. Always loved "10th Avenue Freeze Out" from "Born To Run" and got that as a single back in early '76,and this song has always been a highlight whenever played live,but the moment he introduces the late great Clarence Clemons is always very poignant as you can see the love and respect these 2 great men had for each other. But as a long,long time standing fan of The Boss,I hate to admit this,but sometimes it was frustrating how a simple 3-4 minute song would be stretched out,especially as he would go into his monologues,and that took away from the song itself. I totally agree with your summary of how this song was split into two,but to me,I always felt he could've possibly put in 2 extra songs into the set. This is only my opinion,and I'm not taking anything away from the song or the performance,but,the thing is,Springsteen and The E Street Band are such epic performers,you totally get sucked into the whole thing,and that - is not a bad thing...Another awesome reaction to another awesome performance.

Gotta hear the studio version. So much better. I'll will say this, I went to every big name act at the Cap Centre or RFK in the 70s & 80s. Springsteen was the only one where nobody sat down ever. We danced at our seats every song. 3 girls for every dude too. I danced with 4 all night. Lol. No theatrics and whatever that just was. Just music. Times have changed. Glad I was there. Just music. After hello Washington you never heard them speak again. 😢

Clarence was also one of the Three Most Important People In The World (the other two being Martha Davis of The Motels, and Fee Waybill of The Tubes) from the future civilization of the year 2688 in the 1989 movie "Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure". Their utopian society is based on Bill and Ted's philosophy: Be excellent to one another ... and PARTY ON dudes!

In the "Light Of Day" video I told you this was the best band introduction ever, isn't it? I recommend you another three funny Bruce videos: Out In The Street (London 2009), Dancing In The Dark (London 2013) and the set with Paul McCartney in 2012. Curiosity: at that moment, it wasn't yet the "viagra taking" E Street Band XDDDDD
