Long ago, in Toronto, I was to drive a friend and my sister downtown to line up for tickets to a Bruce Springsteen concert. I was not a fan so had no intention of being in, what was, a long line for tickets in freezing temperatures. That changed when my sister was too sick so I promised to get in line for her. My friend had lots of time to wear me down to buy tickets for myself. The cold hours in line to get those tickets was an experience of endurance I would rather not repeat, but of all the concert's, including a Rolling Stone's concert, it is that Bruce Springsteen's concert I remember most. His rawness touched so deep inside it will last my lifetime.

It's the difference between the great american dream and the reality. He wrote Thunder Road back in 1974, having all the aspirations of a young musician. In '76-'77, he left all of those on Thunder Road. He was on the impossibility to live the dream. He worked hard, he won, but he was unable to have the prize. That's the core of the song - you can achieve, but you can't have.

Since the first time i heard this song on a bootleg until his official release, it is one of my all time favorite tracks. I think Bob Dylan or Bob Marley said》 Some people can feel the the rain;while other people just get wet...True... To me this song is all about faith, getting your things together, and try to keep your hands clean from all those false moves that we can all do in this world... And then one day you find out that people you trusted with your heart spirit and soul zonked you off with a flip of a switch, like this is nothing, like this is normal. The codex of brotherhood and friendship and truth is gone from one moment to another...Thats a bitter pill, because if the essential truth lost his entire meaning, then where do we go from here....? DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF THE TOWN....Yes it feels like this, and then the sky starts to cry, look at the tears falling down the street....thats the moment, when you staring into the night and something in your soul grows cold... Cause the promise is broken and you try to carry on... God bless You Bruce✍🎙🎸🙏

Johnny works in a factory and Billy works downtown Terry works in a rock'n'roll band Looking for that million-dollar sound Me I don't do nothing much, I spend a lot of time alone Some nights I go to the drive-in, And some night I stay home I followed that dream Just like those guys do way up on the screen Drove a chopped up Challenger down Route 9 Through the dead ends and all the bad scenes And when the promise was broken I cashed in a few of my dream Well, I built that Challenger by myself But I needed money and so I sold it I lived a secret I should've kept to myself But I got drunk one night and I told it All my life I fought that fight The one that no man can never win And every day it just gets harder To live the dream I'm believing in Thunder Road ... I stay up every morning until it turns light Thunder Road ... There's something dying out on the highway tonight Well now I won big once and I hit the coast, Oh but somehow I paid the big cost Inside I felt like I was carrying The broken spirits of all the other ones who lost When the promise is broken you go on living But man it takes something from down in your soul Like when the truth is spoken, it don't make no difference Finally something in your heart turns cold Yeah I followed that dream, me and some guysIn the dead ends and all the two-bit bars The night the promise was broken I was drunk and far away from home, Sleeping with a stranger In the back seat of a borrowed car Thunder Road ... Here's one for the lost lovers and all the fixed games Thunder Road ... Here's one for the tires rushing by in the rain Thunder Road ... I remember when me and Billy, we'd always say Thunder Road ... We were gonna take it all, and throw it all away TRADUCTION THE PROMISE - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

Arguably the greatest of his many outtakes. It's hard to believe how long it remained something that only existed on old bootlegs until the Tracks version and then the Darkness Anniversary release. I kind of feel that it's like some sign that this was posted today considering how many in the UK today feel like while all seems lost, there is still just that small glimmer that remains.
