Nearly 4 weeks ago I performed a walk away split on a 3 deep nuc in my backyard. Check out this video to see how they are doing. If you watch long enough you will actually be able to see some hard to identify components of the hive that I was able to capture and pinpoint for you in this video. I guess the conditions were just right to be able to do so. I hope it is informative and entertaining for you...
Enjoy!!!

Thanks for checking in. All three hives are doing well. It took the splits awhile to get going good but now they seem to be gaining momentum.

After you do the walk away split and you have a queen cell when can you add a box there alot of bees in the box we're we shook them?? Can you add a super before the queen is breed
@brucesbees
@brucesbees 3 ай бұрын
You can but I would just leave them alone. It’s ok for them to be a little crowded at first. It will take a while for the queen to emerge and get mated. Once mated and laying it will be 21 days before the actual bees begin to emerge. During that time the population will drop off dramatically. I would just wait until they start to rebound and then add as appropriate.

Hey, Bruce. I started a colony from a package in April and they've gone hell bent for leather; they've filled out nearly 3 deep boxes. Anyway, I took a split off them about 3 days ago. I fed them about 1/2 gallon of 1:1 syrup and as of today, they've consumed every drop. How long do you wait before checking to see if they're raising a queen? I figure I could give them a week to see if they're making cells, or I could leave them alone and give it 4-5 weeks to see if there's a new laying queen. What's your approach?

You honestly can look to see if they are making queen cells within a couple of days. But once you see that I would just leave them alone for about 3 or 4 weeks. Walk away splits are a risk but if they had plenty of resources in both hives, and if there are plenty of drones to get the queen mated, odds are you will have success. When I do a walk away split I may peek in during the first week but then pretty much leave them alone for awhile and let them do their thing.

Do you wait a certain amount of time after doing the splits to open and check how they're doing? Like when you catch a swarm or install a package you give them a week to not upset them in their new home, is there an amount of time to leave splits alone before checking them? Thanks so much

If you introduce a cell you need to basically leave them alone for 2 to 3 weeks to allow the queen to get mated and start laying.

I hope it works for you. Probably need to give the new queen(s) at least 2 to 3 weeks to get hatched and mated, especially of you started with eggs. Good luck!!!

Depending on where you live spring is the best time to do these. I don’t think I will do any more this year. Just trying to get ready for winter now. As far as the color of the queen it is 100% genetics. The only way to really guarantee that you will get a yellow queen is to order one from a reputable queen breeder. At least that has been my experience.

@@lialos did great but I’ve started grafting now so don’t know if I will use that method this year but doubled my numbers last year. Happy beekeeping 👍🏻
