Two Points I'll make: Anytime you talk about "popularity" in boxing (or any sport) you are talking about A MOMENT IN TIME. There is a line in the Gladiator movie where the Emperor's sister says "The mob is fickle, brother. He’ll be forgotten in a month." That's what popularity is really like. As for Ryan or Tank selling more on PPV, well you can look up Tanks PPV buys and see that he never sold more than 275K before he fought Ryan. So for Tank to jump from 275k to 1.2 Mil in the Ryan fight tells me it does have something to do with Ryan. Also, I've always said that, the same way styles make fights is how matchups make PPV numbers. Tank vs Ryan was a matchup many wanted to see. Canelo vs Munguía wasn't as popular but many people still paid to see it.

I find the American ego so fascinating, even Bruce is caught up in the mess. Without emotion, everyone knows the heavyweight division is the glamour division. It's the division that has always produced the most mainstream fighters and household names - facts. This generation is no different, Americans are proclaiming guys from lower weight divisions as p4p and the face of boxing because the current crop of American heavyweights are not good. No disrespect for Usyk, but we know he is the best boxer in the world, but it don't make him p4p the best. That's why no heavyweight will ever be on my p4p list. Nobody can beat a good heavyweight like Usyk who ain't a heavyweight. Also, Usyk did get a gift because Daniel Dubois should have gotten credit for a knockout of Usyk. Give Usyk his flowers because he got up from that and knocked out Dubois, but no he ain't no.1 p4p. No controversy in any of Bud's fights and none of them were close. The reason people wouldn't consider Crawford the "face of boxing" is simply because despite his accomplishments, before the Spence fight, only hardcore boxing fans knew who he was. In truth, only hardcore boxing fans know who he is now. Crawford has great skills, but Crawford has had no "I've arrived" moments before Spence .. and IMO Spence was always overhyped and the reason was because of some sparring match he had with Floyd Mayweather. Canelo isn't "the man" anymore because if we are honest, Canelo took his foot of the accelerator when he left the 154lb division. Ever since then, Canelo has been tactically choosing the weakest fighters who manage to get a belt. As soon as Canelo fights someone who still has some dog left in them(Bivol), we saw what it looked like. Tank Davis is a flashy finisher .. but he fights no one and has been content to be promoted from the inside of the cocoon that he's protected in. Tank takes no risks. Period. People were calling Tank #1 while Devin Haney was UNDISPUTED in the same divisions that Tank gained fame in. It's ridiculous. Hell .. at least Haney lost chasing greatness. He was trying to be UNDISPUTED in two different divisions. The kid was calling out everyone that was anyone. Tank flat out admits that he's content to make more money for fighting guys of no consequence. Gervonta behaves as though he's "conquered the world" and has earned the right to take it easy. He really hasn't. I'd say Crawford is best simply because of what he's done in the divisions he's competed in. As it is, Crawford is a candidate to be best of this era. I'd rate him over Ward for sure. I'd rank him way over Tank as Tank gets a lot of press for hiding in a stacked division where he wouldn't fight Lopez, Haney, Lomachenko or Stevenson. To this date Tank still hasn't fought any of them. Tank puts on a great show .. but the fact is that Michael Jordan wouldn't be Jordan if all he did was play high school kids. Crawford's biggest criticism is that he hasn't fought anyone. But that's not his fault. No one is saying that Crawford ducked or avoided anyone. It's just that during his career, there wasn't a ton of stellar talent available for him to fight. I mean .. Crawford's fought most everyone available .. and when there wasn't a marquee rival to prove himself against .. Crawford unified divisions and became undisputed. Twice. There were PLENTY of people for both Canelo and Tank Davis to fight in their own divisions. Crawford went up to keep proving himself. Canelo went up to avoid the new up and coming talent at 154lbs that would have taken him out. Tank won't move anywhere AND he won't fight the big names in his own native division. Boxing has been a mess for a while now. But if Crawford went up to 154lbs and managed to become undisputed again, he will have locked down "Fighter of the Decade" and the best of this era. As it is, he's already on track to do that with what he's already done. Canelo has done a lot .. but the world has watched Canelo give an excellent parkour performance avoiding Bivol and Benavidez. The criticism surrounding Canelo's choices have only grown over the years .. and rightfully so. But I wouldn't put too much stock into what Ward says. His entire attitude changed ever since the tail end of his career. Ward IMO became a company man .. pushing narratives and not speaking up like he used to in order to keep collecting checks. And I'm not made at him. Get the money .. but don't pretend that your integrity is beyond reproach, bro.

Crawford's PROMOTION TEAM is the reason that he's not the face of boxing. They're awful. Tank could fight pocket lint .. and his team would hype the event up as if it were the second coming of Black Jesus. Crawford could fight Benavidez and the fight could possibly fly under the radar. Sometimes it's just like that. But it's almost an oxymoron for Crawford to be P4P #1 while Canelo is at the height of his own career .. but Crawford not be seen as the icon of the sport. Let's face facts brother, Tank hasn't faced one champion yet beside Barrios who doesn't have the IQ of a good boxer such as Tommy hears which Ray Leonard had to go to the fire pit to win that fight because of his understanding of his advantage over which Barrios does give away his height when fighting shorter fighters which was why Mayweather went after him for the WBA belt .
