I was there, I couldn't believe this song was finally making it in the setlist, it was a dream come true. Everything was surreal: the bright Roman summer night sky, a night train passing-by in the distance while Bruce sings "hook up to the night train", the Roma Sinfonietta on stage playing the original score, the silent crowd as if there was only one person attending (me), the energy and the commotion of the thousands of us... In short, the type of thrills you get only from a Springsteen concert!

Excuse my language, but what a fucking masterpiece of a song: the words, the piano, the vocals,. The board mix on this is perfect, and, oh my god, those strings. Absolute perfection! When they bring it down and lift it back up on the "He's singing" part, I get chills every time. I love those backing vocals there, too.

This is the most beautiful song ever recorded. I played it last night off of You Tube Music for my wife and kids for the first time and usually they talk through songs I pick or ask me to hook up their phones to the car audio but they all listened all the way through. Brilliant arrangement and kudos to a couple of the members of the band involved with the original record; David Sancious and Clarence Clemons, all in their early 20's when they arranged this masterpiece.

This is the most complex and masterful rock and roll son ever written. It is part classical, part jazz, part soul, part gospel, part folk, part opera that is compounded together to make a West Side Story type rock ballad. I simply do not know if this type of music still can be written, but I certainly wish that it would. I must say that I yearn for the Bruce of old, he really should try to write a throwback record!

This is perfection. Everything about it is incredibly moving. I come back to this video whenever I need a lift. My favorite song by Bruce. When the string section comes in, it sends shivers down my spine. The joy and smiles on their faces tell me that they knew they were part of something special. You can see that Bruce signed their score sheets. I bet a lot of those sheets are framed and hanging on a wall...

My 11-years older brother turned me onto Bruce and it’s late August,1980 and I’m playing high school football in Monessen, PA, a steel town in fast economic decline 30 mile south of Pittsburgh. I’m 17 years old, I’m 6’3” and weigh 160 pounds. Our 106 year old house does not have air conditioning. At night orange light from the steel mill fills the walls of my bedroom. Three-a-day football practices are kicking my ass! Every night after mom’s great meal I go to my room, put on side B of my vinyl copy of “The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle” (bought used for $2.50 in Charleroi, the next town down the river) and I fall asleep to side B’s three lengthily classics: “Incident,” “Rosalina,” and, “NYC Serenade.” Damn, what a great childhood I had!

Some songs make you want to dance. Some songs want to make you cry. Some songs make you want to turn off the radio. Being a Springsteen fan for 30 years I figured Racing in the Street was always going to be my favourite but now I want to hook up to the night train. This performance transports you to NYC walking in amongst all the characters and the violins just make your spirit soar. Quite a wonderful thing when 12 notes can do that and stop you in your tracks.....

Every time I watch this, I cry. This man so much understands the little movements of everyday life and sacrifice of so many millions of just plain common people. Back in the 1960s, when I was growing up about a dozen miles from Manhattan, the Sunday New York Times magazine ran on its cover the photo of a daisy springing up from a crack in a a let-down concrete walkway. I saved it because hope always springs from the oddest and most destitute of places. I have always loved Springsteen because I think that he understands this, and his understanding comes out in songs such as this one. So thank you,m Bruce, for the joy and for your understanding of just what it is that makes us human beings tick!

And it's a one-off! Because Bruce felt the guy with the sign who followed E Street throughout Europe deserved it! So they brought in the string section and conductor, rehearsed with the band and camera crew...for a one-off! And by the way, it is magnificent in every way. Thanks for sharing.

I was raised in NJ and am a fan of his from his first album and have never seen a live performance of this song- my favorite all-time Bruce favorite. Thank you for sharing how and what got him to perform it, really nice to know. And many thanks to the fan who carried the banner and got him to play my favorite song. Wished I was there in person.....wish he would play it live sometime here in the states. Grateful that I got to see this live perfromance, a dream come true.

I remember finding this song in 1984 when I was a Sophomore in HS. I used to listen to it and fall asleep I remember because of the crying strings and Clarence’s Sax. Jake is searching for the feel for it and Roy plays it a little different here but the song is so full and the string section really makes it. That string section backs up Michael Bolton, Andrea Bocelli, and some other artists that subcontract them. I think they are happy to be there as they smile when Bruce turns to them, you can tell they know they are part of something special. What a great song.. it's a very emotional song...wow!

A beautiful version of my favourite Bruce song: perfect string arrangements (nice to see Bruce salute the players at the end), lovely piano intro by Roy Bittan (building on the original by the excellent David Sancious), and how great to see Clarence's nephew flawlessly recreating the big man's saxophone parts! Fab!

@@nkjrm348 Oh, yes, yes, PLEASE, let's bow deeply to the invaluable and criminally underrated contribution of David Sancious' here. And, let's be honest, arrangements like this piano part and on Incident on 57th St qualify (as do Bittan's parts all over the 3rd LP) for co-writing credit that they never got, whatever reason. My humble opinion. And, yeah, as the precursor to Jungleland, Meeting Across the River and Backstreets, these 2 from the 2nd LP, NY City Serenade is inexcusably unnoticed by the world at large. Can you imagine? After this album they were f'n ready to drop him from the label?

now I am 51 years old and have spent the last 35 years running after our new jersey guy. in over 30 shows I've seen, I live and live again the same emotions now as then. if I am the man I am, I certainly owe it to him, to his example, to his words. and in every video I see and see I find only joy. true joy, pure, spontaneous and intense joy in every face of every single spectator. and I'm glad I was with them. and I am happy to have shared unique and true moments with them. how unique and true each of us is, also thanks to Bruce. Hugs to all. Alessandro

You are starting a great journey ! I haven't finished mine and I have been a fan since 1981 when my elder brother bought "The River". Very few knew Springsteen in France at the time (none of my schoolmates for sure, I was 13). Soon after he bought "Born to Run" and "Darkness". I listened to these albums hundreds of time but I didn't know his first two albums as well ... After that I bought most of his new albums and boxsets and Live DVDs. My younger brother offered me last week for Xmas a fantastic book in French where 332 Springsteen songs are explained and analysed. I discover new great songs everyday but this live performance of "New York Serenade" is sublime you're right and I must admit that I didn"t really know this song until now (I must have heard it only a few times before it the last 40 years). And thank you brothers !

Just plain awesome. This is one of my favorite Springsteen songs, and to hear him nail this 40 YEARS after he originally recorded it is just mind blowing. Glad he put the strings in for this. I'd rate this performance right up there with the Feb. '75 version he did at Widener College in PA, which is captured on the bootleg "The Saint, The Incident, and The Main Point Shuffle" Love how the crowd was so attentive and awestruck too.
