That looks like a big Cam 3 and possibly a 350 or 400 but cuz of the paint scheme that was a produce hauling truck in the day and what you're doing with that truck is absolutely awesome I've been at it since 75 driving and to see an old truck brought back to life brings a big smile on my face thank you for taking a time to video all this because I know there's a lot of old-time drivers out there that have got a huge smile on your face

As a 14 yr old back in 1958, I enjoyed helping my neighbor change the oil and filters on his big rig and he also had his own gas pump, so we filled his rig as well. He drove for Roadway Express if I remember correctly, and he always took us for a quick ride for helping him out. Even at the ripe age of 75 I still enjoy watching them get maintained.

When pre-filling filters I always fill through the small hole not the large one. That way the fluid actually goes through the filter element. If any crud happened to get in there when filling it would go straight into the compartment unfiltered. Just food for thought. Cool old IH truck!

You mentioned that the shifting seemed "stiff". Looks like you have an Eaton-Fuller transmission so the shift lever should go into a control box that actuates the shifting. There's a drain plug on the bottom/side of the box - remove and drain. Fill/clean with some diesel and refill with some light motor oil. Use synthetic if you're headed for cold country.
@dennisspencer1113
@dennisspencer1113 4 жыл бұрын
@Christian Macri With cabovers, the stick doesn't work directly on the transmission. It goes to a control box that is mechanically linked to the transmission. The box contains oil and the rubber boot can allow water to get into box that creates a heavy brown goo. The box has a drain plug and it should be serviced every year or so.

@gregdcross
@gregdcross 4 жыл бұрын
Some suggestions based upon experience with old trucks; If you are planning on taking it on a public road, change every air line going to the brake chambers. The law will be pulling you over and checking for old cracked airlines. Second, replace ALL of the fuel lines - both supply and return. Old fuel lines will crack and draw air into the fuel and return lines will leak. Once you start driving the truck, all of the vibrations will cause you a lot of leaks in the fuel and air lines because they have gotten brittle over time. And last, the air diaphragm in the brake chambers are 20 years old - ie just ready to burst. Yes, you can rebuild them but use a lot of caution because there is a powerful spring inside the brake can. Rehabilitation of an old truck is more than making it pretty and changing fluids. Basically all plastic and rubber lines get brittle.
@redpillcommando
@redpillcommando 4 жыл бұрын
OMG I forgot about that. Those brake springs can be a killer. I used to know a truck mechanic that had a big chuck of his skull dented in from an accident with a brake spring. It seems a bit of gravel got jammed in the lock so that it did not fully engage. He pulled the housing and the spring popped lose and almost killed him. * Edited because I can't spell worth a flip!
@loganfields4276
@loganfields4276 4 жыл бұрын
A trick i learned with that is to plumb air into the spring brake to release it when piggybacking. You can also cage it but to me its way faster to just put a plug on it and hook an air hose to it

I worked at a Union 76 Stop in Columbia, SC in another life, pumping #2, topping off the oil with Rotella T and thumping the tires, 12-shifts. Some of my coworkers were trustees from CCI. Seems like the old Internationals were the only rigs where you didn't have to pull out a 7- foot dipstick from the front. And I thought I was the last man standing who still hasn't started wearing those fancy gloves. Nice work.

as a Vietnam vet and Motor T OIC we were able to fix dented fuel/air tanks with simple internal air pressure. drivers were constantly cutting turns over rocks or curbs doing damage to tanks. we found that using the air compressor on the truck and fitted rubber plugs into the fill port with a good retaining device and running compressors until the dent damage popped out worked extremely well. food for thought , always lay a piece of plywood , cardboard etcetera over the frame behind the cab and attach with a bungee cord , and do a quick test drive , the reason is the grease from lubing the drive line will sling all over the back of the cab , if you do the cardboard , what it slings is in the first city block , so you catch it and keep it off the cab ...

Just a tip..... take a hole punch and hammer, and punch a hole in the bottom of those oil filters BEFORE you break 'em loose, and drain 'em out. Saves a hell of a mess with that oil running down the sides! You can always just crack the filters loose to make sure they're going to come off, but one way or another you're gonna be changing them anyway!!

Change all the oils after sitting that long. DO NOT drive on those tires anymore than you have to. When changing the diff oil make sure to drain the hubs also. Then another thing to watch for is the wheel seals leaking after getting it on the road. Enjoying the vids.

Even a oil that is old can still lubricate good enough. Usage not the age that counts when it comes to oil 😊 To check if the oil is still ok , put some between your fingers. If the oil is feeling dry and not sticky its time for a change. And btw . When you change the oil filter. Put some oil on the sealing. If you dont do that it will get stuck like you described when you removed the old one, and it will not seal like it should either. Keep up the good work . Learning by doing.

@lordbeavis69 No matter what he should change the oil and fuel filter not too many hours after starting to use it again with 20 years of rusting away. It was hard to see in the video but I believe the part you need for your automatic slack adjuster is called a pawl. If you can find any part #'s on the adjuster you should be able to get a new pawl. If you can't take one from another adjuster. You should be able to remove the pawl from one of the good ones with a 3/4 wrench. Then you can take that to a parts company that deals with those parts and match one up.
