One wonderful thing about Bruckner's Locus Iste is that there are singing groups that pronounce the Latin term for God as DIO while other groups pronounce IT as DEO. Both are correct, though. They refer to the same Almighty God.
@johnholmes9124 жыл бұрын
Both are NOT correct; leaving aside Ciceronian (classical), one chooses from dantean, chaucerean or shakesperian according to the language of the composer. Italian pronunciation is inappropriate here.

Fantastic conductor! :D Wow. Rarely see a conductor with actual technique. :) And then what a surprise, the choir is amazing. Tenor entry on irreprehen sibilis est was quite shit tho :/ That was the only place I saw where the conductor wasn't very clear on entry- waved around a bit too much, so some came in early, and most if not all started on the wrong note. They should have been a bit more excited singing it too- a quiet, excited accent on every syllable. That is my only criticism. :) Well done though! -Ed

Too fast - in my humble opinion. I also do not understand why the choir should have the score available for a relative uncomplicated motet in C-major that takes no longer than three minutes to perform. The tenor entry at 1:04 with the "irreprehen sibilis est" section is shockingly uneven. One would expect a German University choir to perform at a higher standard before posting on You-tube.

Do you know many ancient Romans? Since Latin is considered a "dead" language, you can never be sure about it's correct pronunciation. Native English speakers tend to pronounce it different than, for instance, native German speakers etc. It doesn't necessarily mean one is right and the other is wrong.
@7989ccye10 жыл бұрын
I prefer "Deh-Oh" But, I'm American ..

I agree. Everything was beautiful except that every time I heard "Dee-o" something inside of me cringed. Are they taught differently in different countries?
@mlshatto9 жыл бұрын
Tyler Scruggs Yes, this is German Latin, and very helpful because our choir is using the German pronunciation tomorrow. You can also notice the schwa instead of "eh" at the end of "iste" and the zee in irreprehensibilis. A well-trained chorus will use this pronunciation in Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana." And since Bruchner was Austrian, it's probably much closer to what he heard than is our liturgical Latin.

@cieslac10 жыл бұрын
Rui Moura Then prove it! I am aware of scientific methods. I'm waiting! That endless discussion about latin pronounciation is so silly. What you hear is "German latin" which sounds different than (imho) ugly "American latin" which again sounds different than "french latin" and so one... So, a German choir with a German conductor (who normally decides about pronounciation) sings a song composed by a native German speaker. From that point of view it IS correct. Like it or not, no one forces you to listen, but don't claim it to be wrong, because that's just arrogant and not serious at all! If you really want to know what is meant correct, you would have to ask Bruckner himself. What a pity he can't tell us...........
@trp815510 жыл бұрын
cieslac Actually, Rui Moura is correct. Deo should be pronounced as "day-oh", not "dee-oh". I know there are differences in the Ecclesiastical Latin (Church Latin) sung here, and Classical Latin, but it does not affect the word Deo. The difference between the two pronunciations does, however, affect words such as "inaestimabile". Also, there really is no such a thing as German-Latin; Rome never conquered what is now modern-day Germany, and thus, never gave the German Confederations the Latin language. Modern German does not directly derive from Latin, as languages such as French and Spanish do. It's not only "American-Latin" that pronounces Deo as "day-oh"; go listen to the Monteverdi Choir, The Sixteen, or Polyphony, all British choirs and among the best in the world, sing this, and they pronounce it as "day-oh'. Do not accuse anyone of being arrogant -- especially when your reply came off as VERY pretentious and rude. I also have taken Latin in school, and have sung many pieces that contain the word "Deo". Never once have I said "dee-oh". Why do we not go ask the Vatican to see what they say? Seeing how Latin derived from there, and it is basically the only place that still speaks it constantly.
@ruimoura248510 жыл бұрын
cieslac German latin? American latin?? AHAHA WTH!?!? Latin is just Latin. I've studied Latin for 3 years, so I know what I'm saying. By the way, if I sing a song in german or french, do I have to sing it with my country pronunciation? ahah
@tristansmyth680211 жыл бұрын
pronunciation - interesting comment, Ecclesiastical Latin is a little different in pronunciation from the Latin spoken at the height of the Roman Empire, funny you mention it to be a dead language too since a lot of schools are now teaching it again - but the difference in how it is pronounced between and English and a German choir singing this music, it makes no difference - if we want our Latin to be the best i guess we should all head off to the Vatican :-)

Tolles Stück. Fand ich sehr übereilt und teilweise gehetzt. Ein bisl mehr Dynamik würde das Stück um Längen aufwerten. Tenöre und Dirigent mal den Solo-Einsatz üben.. Fürn durchschnittlichen Uni-Chor ganz ok.
@angelosfotiadis98 Жыл бұрын
