Following on from the recent release of Brahms's Ein deutsches Requiem, Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker continue their exploration of 19th-century Germanic greats in the orchestras 125th year. This recording is released in the Berliner Philharmonikers birthday month; the orchestra was founded in May 1882. Anton Bruckners fourth symphony the "Romantic" is considered one of his greatest achievements. It offers an uplifting spiritual journey across a huge musical landscape which demands to be experienced and will stay with the listener long after the final chords have died away.

Bruckner! Yesterday was the 116th anniversary of his death. Great to see those photos again and hear Rattle's words. The combination of romantic and classical is a difficult idea for some people to take. Yes, a basic pulse for Bruckner is a must. But if you prefer a Wagnerian approach, then why not just stick to Wagner? Bruckner only discovered Wagner when he was approaching 40. The deep essence had already been formed by then.

Only Celibidache had the exclusive privilege to understand really this music ore at least to guess at what's behind.

Rattle is a decent Bruckner conductor, but I don't think he has this music quite under his grips the way Gunter Wand or Riccardo Chailly do. It seems that he's still learning about it and trying to adopt his own philosophy behind it. That said, an interesting sidenote about Bruckner's 4th is that it was the only symphony to receive a title other than a number, which the 4th was named the "Romantic."

Nothing erotic in Bruckner?? What about the adagios from the 7th and 8th? The adagio from the 7th was literally used as the soundtrack to a film called "Senso", which translates roughly as "Lust", and if you watch the film you can see why!

Good description of Bruckner but I don't think Rattle was a particularly good interpreter of his music...

Ever wonder why Rattle makes a poor Bruckner interpreter? This interview holds many clues: his passive aggressive attitude toward Bruckner and “his god”; his insistence on keeping everything under wraps and refusing to let the orchestra play freely (Karajan encouraged his players to soar in Bruckner); his snotty comments about Bruckner’s world being empty. I could go on. Rattle is fine in 20th and 21st century music (such as it is) but ask him to play anything with sincerity, spirituality, and depth and he is lost. Give him “music” from Adés and his ilk and he is in his element.

Bruckner not erotic? (says Battle) The spiritual and the erotic can co-exist. The Italian masters of the brush wouldnt have it any other way. God as creator. Very erotic concept. The slow movement of the 8th symphony is crushingly passionate and erotic. The last few minutes of the 4th? No separation between the erotic and the spiritual, the latter giving birth to the former. I think Rattle's agnosticism sees some necessary division.

One tempo? One pulse? For Bruckner?! What the hell is he talking about? Greatest living conductor? Maybe most overrated living conductor. I'll give you that.

Joseph Charles yeah cos he's trying to perform Bruckner in the same way as all his other composers. You can't do that. Bruckners music is in a completely different dimension...
